and so it begins....suddenly Apple fans warm to foldable phones.....

Just like once Apple removed the headphone jack, every Apple fan suddenly was against it! A perfect example of 1984 and groupthink.

I think foldable phones are a headfake. Kind of like VR and Google Glass, just don’t see the utility and can’t envision it catching on.

Oh boy... somebody doesn't game and/or doesn't realize how big the gaming industry is.

Not seeing it in this thread, looks like the usual Apple-hate drivel.
They only hate it because the displays come from Samsung. If Apple releases a foldable phone.....it will sell extremely well and be well received by most Apple fans....even if it has a Samsung display.
But that fact will be down played like it has in previous models that had Samsung displays like the iPhone X and Xs and Xs Max

AR glasses are a multi billion dollar market in the making. They were just a bit ahead of their time and the technology. You'll of course be singing their praises once Apple releases its smart glasses product.

Because it's not "stupid" even though you personally don't want it?

Different people want different things. Shocking concept, I know.
Someone somewhere wanting something is not really an argument in and of itself. Shocking i know.

Evidence shows otherwise.

It's a privacy disaster in the making.

Except it's a lot of someones in a lot of somewheres, but you of course don't appreciate that fact because you aren't among them.

"Stupid" is also a subjective evaluation on an idea. Clearly a lot of people disagree with you and think this idea isn't "stupid," hence Samsung's R&D and manufacture of an initial supply of 1MM units. A manufacturer has to be pretty confident to create a 7-figure unit initial production of something.

Thank you for this irrelevant observation.

I’m surprised people are being so negative towards the idea of foldable phones (but it does sound very familiar).

Think beyond the limits that exist now (price, durability, or whatever), isn’t an iPad in your pocket great? What about a small phone with Max screen inside?

The word ‘gimmick’ gets thrown around as if it’s just a feature like wireless charging. I think it’s the next form of mobile computing.

again you speak, but grossly innacurately.

No, Innovation does NOT require meaningful change to your life for it to be innovative. NOR does innovation require any measure of sales or adoption for it to exist.
https://www.dictionary.com/browse/innovation

All Innovation is, is a NEW method to accomplish a task in a unique or different way than methods that came before.

your attempt to call someone out for misusing a word while actually misusing the word your self was cute.

can I give you some advice. next time you post. research your post before you press reply.

So much this!

innovation | ˌinəˈvāSH(ə)n | noun the action or process of innovating. • a new method, idea, product, etc.: technological innovations designed to save energy.

innovate | ˈinəˌvāt | verb [no object] make changes in something established, especially by introducing new methods, ideas, or products: the company's failure to diversify and innovate competitively. • [with object] introduce (something new, especially a product): innovating new products, developing existing ones.

You have no way of counting. Neither Huawei nor Samsung phone is on sale. The reason Samsung is trying to push these foldable displays to apple is simple because they are not going to sell their phone in any meaningful capacity and if apple is not going to come in and make it popular and cool development in foldable displays in phones will simply stop.

That's a very shallow definition.

In 2007, a lot of people were very negative about a new mobile computing device.

"It doesn't have a physical keyboard, so it'll never replace my Blackberry!," they said.

"Business users will never adopt it!"

"It's a cute novelty, but that's it. You can't do anything on it!"

Yawn...

Even if Samsung held back the tech and had a monopoly on foldable phones in the short run, foldable wouldn’t reach mass market without Google and Apple. I assume it’s much more financially lucrative in the long-term to be the main supplier of foldable displays to everyone than sit on the tech and sell only to the faithful Galaxy consumer.

That's a very shallow definition.

when the facts don't fit your narrative, ignore them?

"I REJECT YOUR REALITY AND SUPPLANT IT WITH MYOWN!"

come on man.

you don't get to pick and chose the definition of words based on your own preconceived notions.

ffs, this is why i miss the downvote button. SOMETIMES people need to see their posts get buried for silliness;

I don't have to count. Samsung said it's making 1MM units manufactured in the initial production. What part of that is unclear?

That's a very shallow definition.
And by that you mean "it doesn't serve my misguided argument." Those are, however, the definitions provided by Apple's dictionary app. That means they're standard, accepted definitions.

Words have meanings. You don't get to redefine words yourself and then lecture others about how their use of the standard accepted definition is wrong. That's the height of arrogance.

i agree....the more companies they can get to adopt the folding displays....... it helps them to lower the manufacturing costs.

don't see apple every doing this since their M.O. is always to make things thinner and lighter

There are millions of Apple fans who don’t even want a 4.7” iPhone, let alone a phablet. They like their 4” SE and think phablets are stupid. Unfortunately for them, they did catch on.

This is true, but it also underscores the problem with talking about "people" and "users" as if they're one monolithic entity with homogenous preferences.

And that's the problem with the people who insist that foldables won't catch on. It doesn't have to be a majority or even a plurality of people who want them for the idea to be wildly successful.

what if Apple were the ones to make the folding devices thin and lighter?

I think there's merit to the tech. The current devices are clearly early adopter. I'd be very curious to see what Apple is capable of in this space.

Dear Heinecken, don't take these kids too seriously. Most of them have no technical idea at all and automatically clap their hands when something is "big" or "foldable".
Since I don't have TV and reading all day gets boring eventually, I get my daily dose of amusement here :)

I would like to see that too....would love to have a foldable iPhone.
