Bragging about cropping an image to simulate a zoom? Ugh. I will almost never use any cropping over an optical zoom. And any lens zoom with a ratio over about 5x is already pretty compromised optically. If you do, you’re using the wrong tool for the job. Get closer.
They have 10 x optical zoom.

Good point. It’s also ignores the fact that the moon is in motion and trying to get a good picture of it is difficult enough with good camera equipment.
I think you would be fine for up to a few seconds (assuming using a tripod). Although, because the sensor is pretty high resolution, it might be a bit shorter than that. Astrophotography is fun. :)

That’s nice, Samsung. Run along now. The adults in the room want to talk.

There’s a lot more than optical zoom to a complex device like the iPhone. The zoom is nice, but item 36 of 99 in my hierarchy of phone needs.

What about the 10x optical zoom?

It's a shame they didn't showcased that, might have made them look better, instead they couldn't contain the urge to go for the 100x digital zoom to "leave the iPhone in the dust" but which in reality looks like crap. For what it's worth, why not 1400x digital zoom Samsung?

"Digital zoom" is equivalent to taking a non-zoomed shot and cropping it.

Samsung is definitely aiming this ad at people who don't know better. Us photography nerds roll our eyes but regular people will fall for it.
As a self proclaimed photography nerd, can you help me understand how to crop an unfocused white blob into a shot of the moon that shows craters and other definition? Whenever I shoot the moon with the 12 Pro Max, it is a fuzzy white spot.

With the 10x of the Samsung, it might look fuzzy, but you can at least see the definition of the features on the moon.

Now, is that a reason to buy on smartphone over another? Not really. But I would like a better camera than I have on my 12 Pro Max. 1) the zoom is not good enough, though I like the wide angle addition and 2) many many shots are way too warm and not representative of what I see.

Really annoying when manufacturers don't put the specs on the main product page. Luckily gsmarena has the specs on the 4 lenses. (it does have both 10x and 3x optical zoom - so you're both right) :)

108 MP, f/1.8, 24mm (wide), 1/1.33", 0.8µm, PDAF, Laser AF, OIS
10 MP, f/4.9, 240mm (periscope telephoto), 1/3.24", 1.22µm, dual pixel PDAF, OIS, 10x optical zoom
10 MP, f/2.4, 70mm (telephoto), 1/3.24", 1.22µm, dual pixel PDAF, OIS, 3x optical zoom
12 MP, f/2.2, 13mm (ultrawide), 1/2.55", 1.4µm, dual pixel PDAF, Super Steady video

Hmmm, I got 300x zoom on my iPhone and can take pictures of horses on the beach from my mountain peak observatory:

BEAT THAT, SAMSUNG!

Do they already have all of the Android users they’re going to get? I mean, getting someone to switch from their iPhone isn’t too easy, getting them to switch from another Android? Much easier. Maybe their camera isn’t better than other Android phones, though?

Comparing against the weakest phone cameras made… is that making the case they want to make? I assume it is, because they’re a big multinational company and I’m just typing comments online ;)

Whenever these Samsung articles pop up, the iPhone defenders are instantly on the offensive wth the first comments. Happens every time like clockwork

Perhaps, but they do have a point. Yes, Samsung does have some good features, but why not just concentrate on the positives? It's just a bit crass and tasteless, IMHO. The fact they have to compare with the iPhone suggests perhaps they lack confidence in their product. Why not compare with other Android phones, where (I'd guess) they'd be more likely to find an audience receptive to the charms of their phone?

On another topic, and this may just be me, is it normal to want to take photos of one's food with a phone? Do you eat it afterwards or not?

Hey Samsung! Remember those ingenious ads? You’ll probably follow Apple and delete these ads.
