Only the ignorant don't think any lithium battery can fail. It's actually not a new issue and has been happening since the 80s with lithium PRAM batteries exploding in early Apple IIgs and 68K Macs.

You're not even replying to what I said at this point, just repeating the same irrelevant fact. I said in my post, that you replied to, and it's been said in many, many posts in this thread that lithium batteries can fail. Samsung had to withdraw 2.5 million Note 7's, not because any battery can fail, but because they screwed up. If it was simply that any battery can fail and that Good Guy Samsung are trying to protect users then they would have to withdraw every phone on the market, based on the fact that it may fail, no?

They failed. Deal with it.

You're doing a disservice by spreading ignorance. There's been 92 reported cases and 26 of those are fake or retracted so 66 out of 2.5 million makes the failure rate about 0.0000264% so inline with typical lithium battery failure which is rare and not "endemic" like you claim. Difference is a company decided to be proactive and part of the process of issuing a CPSC recall is the FAA is notified. Out of precaution the FAA issued a guideline that it can be carried on the plane but turned off and not because it's any worse than any other phone battery failures that you're falsely implying.

Other companies need to learn to be proactive...

So Samsung are committing business suicide by withdrawing and replacing a phone that has "typical lithium battery failure" rate. Is that your contention? Because I think you know that makes no sense.

It's much cheaper for a company and its lawyers to sweep it under the rug for as long as possible then settle with an extended service warranty when hit with a class action lawsuit. Only an ignorant consumer would prefer this instead of immediate proactive fix. Don't you think?
