If Samsung is low end, then your iPhone is low end as a lot of its parts is made by Samsung. In fact, Samsung could have made it faster to being #1 if it would stop supplying Apple stuff. Eliminate competition as a lot of people here want to do anything against Apple. Samsung could have than that too.

3GS... It's free? Ewwwww...

exactly what i was thinking. my father who uses T-Mobile was past his contract and called in not too long ago to cancel his plan. When asked why, he told them that he wanted to get an iPhone 4S. In response, T-Mobile CSR asked what they could possibly do to keep him. My father then asked how much the Samsung Glaxay S II was and T-Mobile decided to just give it to him for FREE. Seems like a desperate giveaway.

You think Samsung didn't get any money for that phone ?

Like when UK carriers give out FREE iPhones, Apple gets no money right ?

Samsung got the full price for that phone, they sold it. T-mobile is the one that ate the cost.

Quality > Quantity

Applying your logic, Apple iPhone 4S isn't good. Either my claim is right or your logic is wrong.

TBH it makes me laugh to see the way you trash competitors against facts and consider Apple as the only company in the world that can actually make something good.

C'mon Samsung. Although your statement MAY be true, shipping # ≠ sales #.

Ah, T-Mobile didn't paid Samsung for this phone?

When Movistar gave a iPhone 3GS for free to my dad last year Apple wasn't paid full price?

gotta a agree on this.

Competition is good, otherwise apple will make iPhone 4S2 next year - 4 speed x 2!!!

5 Million in 3 months......

iphone 4s, 5 million in 6 or 7 days.

Perspective

While that is impressive, Remember the iPhone 4s is the premier iOS phone with no other phones of that classification to compete with. The Samsung product is competing against handsets from HTC, Motorola, etc, as well as other handsets that manufacturer makes alongside it.

This is impressive??

They sell at least 23 models, from the good, to the bad, to the ugly.

Now, if it was just two models of the Galaxy S, that would be impressive. But as it stands, all this is is Android market-flood.

Remember: Apple achieves what they do with only one or at most two models of phones. Not over 20. Apple doesn't ship low-end bare-bones commodity-ware.

As if somebody prevented Apple from selling 23 models. Each company has its own strategy. Apple likes to see the waiting lines for their products - hence limited number of models. Do you think people would be lining up to buy iPhones if there were 23 versions of them? But it appears that Samsung may win in the end (just like PCs did it to Macs).

Yes it's impressive. It doesn't matter if it's from one phone or 1,000 different ones - only to people like you. It's ok LTD - you can admit - Samsung sold a lot of phones.

Another perspective - In addition to Galaxy SII, Samsung was selling another 22 models of smart phones all these 5 months. People were able to buy the model that suits them best and apparently they did. Besides, Apple sells 5 million phones in 5 days and then nobody buys these phones for one year waiting for a refresh (exaggeration, obviously)

Less desperation for Samsung, moreso for T-Mobile. If you're a good customer with a solid history, most carriers will throw tons of incentives your way just to keep you onboard if you threaten them with cancellation.

Just because they threw a free Galaxy S II his way doesn't mean OMG SAMSUNG DOOM'D THEY GIVIN' WAY FONEZ!

Big Whoop

I love them to compare one model to one apple model
it's like the android stats they are not all as smart as the iPhone

"shipped" or "sold" - big difference.

people need to get this statement into perspective. Apple sell to the phone company's ie vodafone etc and to the man on the street direct.
samsung sell only to the mobile phone company's and various re sale sites like play or amazon etc

if its shipped its sold for both apple and samsung unless they have a sale or return agreement in place.

I don't get all this Samsung hate or iPhone defensiveness. I've used both the iPhone and Galaxy phones... and *gasp* they're both great phones. The iPhone can do some things better than the Galaxy... but the Galaxy does some things better than the iPhone too. And that's fine with me... it makes both companies strive to make better products and will benefit us all in the long run.

And more more thing, all these personal examples of why non-iPhone phones suck ("they gave it away for free so they're desperate" or "it sucked so much my friends returned it").... doesn't mean anything. It's just one example out of many. You can just as well argue that all iPhones suck because "my neighbor returned it due to a dead pixel" using that logic.

Don't forget the high return rate. 2 people i know that bought the SG2 are returning them.

Here's some more substantial data (using a sample of 2 people isn't good):

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1232811/

Apple retention rates 89%; Samsung 28%.

Samsung is selling lots of phones, but also losing lots of customers (poor retention), Apple keeps most of it customers.

Good thing is that the market is wide open still (lots of first time smartphone buyers)

How is it different? If Samsung shipped it, they sold it. They sold it to a carrier and got paid.

So pease explain how is it different regarding samsungs bottom line, $$$..

Depends on the change in the channel inventory from beginning to end. Apple announces this number. Their channel inventory decreased. (They sold more phones than they shipped.) Samsung doesn't report sold, shipped, or channel inventory.

Hard to compare without more information, but I can't imagine that Samsung padded the channel inventory with more than 1 million units in the quarter. So if the shipping estimates are in the ballpark, they likely topped Apple's 17 million units either way.
