My samsung television has the same features it had when I bought it 2 years ago. If I want a 3D tv I have to buy a new one. My car wont get VW's newest engine and they only do firmware upgrades if they find a bug, not to add new features. So I don't really see your point at all.

The harley catalog is full of parts for old 90s/early 00s bikes. New parts are still coming out for those. I expect my '10 to have parts and "upgrades" for a looooooooooooooong time.

Yeah but you have to pay for those. They are not FREE. I have a catalogue full of VW parts and my car is an 07. But if I want those parts I have to buy them. The software upgrades you get from Apple are free. If i dont upgrade my car or my iPhone or my iPad or TV or microwave for that matter i will still use it till it falls a part or a new product that has sufficient new features to overcome cost breaks my wallet loose. :p

That's the point though, even if you'd want to pay to upgrade your iPhone 3G with new software, you can't with Apple. With Harley, I don't need to buy a brand new bike to continue to get support and updates. With Apple I need to buy a brand new phone.

Just a counterpoint to your "products should be expected to be obsolete after a few months". No, we shouldn't expect or tolerate that. Same goes with the many botched upgrades to Android phones.

I'll agree that you are making a point, but not a very good one. Your harley was thousands more than a 3g. And computer technology evolves much faster than automotive tech. Lastly why would you want your stuff to be obsolete? That does not make it unusable, and that would mean that the world would remain stagnant, no innovation... I love that all companies, not just apple, make new products everyday. Or else i would be relagated to my tandy computer with my 486dx2 and 4 mb of ram. not very exiting :D

Enjoy your Android phones and tablets everyone...

Google Takes Heat Over App Security
By SPENCER E. ANTE And AMIR EFRATI

MARCH 8, 2011

"A major software attack on mobile phones has put pressure on Google Inc. to do more to secure its online store for smartphone applications.
The company behind the now ubiquitous Android operating system came under fire after computer-security experts last week uncovered more than 50 malicious applications that were uploaded to and distributed from Google's Android Market.

Some security experts said the incident shows Google, which doesn't inspect Android apps before they are published, needs to do more to try to ensure the apps are safe before they are offered to smartphone users.
Google largely relies on users to rate apps and raise the alarm about any problems with them. It also requires consumers to give their consent for an app to access their personal data. But that approach isn't enough, according to Chris Wysopal, chief technology officer of computer-security firm Veracode. "App stores need to get serious about vetting code before it is available for customer download," Mr. Wysopal wrote on his blog.

I have an iPhone, iPhone 3G and a iPhone 4, all in service right now. All work fine, and do what they have always done and what they were designed to do and what they were sold to do..

Actually all 3 do more now then they were capable of when they were sold to me.

Are you some sort of .... I won't say it. Just wondering what you need 3 phones for.

The reality is though, that the iPhone and iPhone 3G are no longer supported. That's quite a short life cycle for support. I expect to be able to install Windows 8, 9 and maybe even Windows 10 on my now 2-year-old laptop. My 2-year-old iPhone 3G is finished, no more new functionality.

Anyway back on topic, I hear tell that Samsung are going to go ahead with the Tab 10.1 as normal. So, maybe they just intended to say that they would have to rethink the direction for future Tab tablets?

Perhaps they'll make an 8.3mm thin, wifi-only version, with crap cameras for $499. Those copycats.

Lies…

You will tinker with it more than you will use it :p

Android is actually good. You should try it! Besides, most nerds enjoy "tinkering" around with their nerd devices.

Things have been a little quiet here since the iPad2 debuted. I haven't heard much from the Android fans nor seen much news about the Galaxy or Xoom for that matter. But I am sure the Xoom and Galaxy will catch up soon like the Android fans here proclaim.

It looks like Howard Stern is ditching his Android too. LOL

That's the difference between Android and iDevice users. The former enjoy the features, the latter enjoy the sale numbers. It looks like Galaxy Tab 10.1 is shaping up to be a great tablet. You can preview its features in this interesting video. I do not think iPad 2 has anything on it.

Historically with the iPhone, Apple has actually been better than a lot of handset manufacturers when it comes to updating their old models.

iPhone 2G worked fully on iOS 1 and 2 with only a few differences when it came to iOS 3.

When Samsung brought out the original Galaxy, Android 1.6 was already old, and they basically forgot about the people who signed up for 2 year contracts for these phones.

At least Apple will continue to develop for their handsets for the length of your phone contract.

This is true.
Most phone manufacturers make one update, maybe two and then move on to the next device.

The cool thing about "most" Android phones is the end users is able to upgrade the OS themselves and add features if they wish. Sucks for your typical user but geeks, myself included, like this ability.

It is however, a real shame that Steve Jobs was so paranoid, that the relative flood of Android phones beginning with the Droid X, caused him to rush an obviously unfinished iP4 to market.

if I was the CEO of a company and we're trying to make an iPad killer, I would make the following specs.

1 GB ram
1 GHz dual core processor
8MP back camera with 1080p HD video
5MP front camera with 720p HD video
10.1 display (1680x1280)
100,000:1 contrast ratio
64 GB of storage, upgradable to 128GB.
2 ports for HDMI
1 port for SD
1 port for MicroSIM
1 port for MicroUSB
1 port for future Thunderbolt
And the back cover would have a 5.1 HD surround sounds.
And it would have: Honeycomb 3.0.1, FLASH 10.2, Gyroscope, Anti-reflective and Corning Gorilla Glass covering the whole tablet. It would weigh twice as heavy as the iPad and half thicker. But who cares. We're getting a great tablet specs here for a measly $599 with 2 years contract with Cricket Wireless. :D

I just pissed my pants and spilled coffee all over my self.

Haven't had such a good laugh in a long time.

Have fun moving all ten of those.

Or hitting a $599 price tag without HEAVY subsidies.

The original iPhone and the 3G both do everything they did when I paid for them and a lot more in addition. The fact that they don't run the some of the newest feature is not an issue, nor is it a problem. The devices have served me very well for a long time and still get used every day. If you bought a new PC in 2002, it was probably not going to hang terribly well running Windows Vista when it came out.
