I may be an Apple "fanboy" but I can give credit where due: Samsung makes nice hardware and uses some of the most gorgeous displays I've ever looked at. After that disaster last year I sincerely hope the Note 8 does well for them. I legit felt bad for Samsung and the Note 7 was a nice device that deserved a better fate.

I have something to tell you.

Admitting such thing doesn't really make you an Apple Fanboy... it makes you a rational person who is ok with his choices..

Nothing wrong with that at all. I just commenting because I wish more people would be more open and accepting of things that they might not otherwise use.

Nice hardware, terrible software.

Nice hardware until next one is released then the software will be updated to make the phone so slow you'll have to buy the new one.

This is coming from owner of S2 through S7 Edge and Note 1 through Note 7…

There is one thing NO ONE can argue about : the ugly, dated, huge protruding camera lens of the new iPhone looks embarrassingly inferior compared to the discreet, flat camera lens of Note 8.

I don't understand why Samsung can make it flat while Apple is incapable of overcoming such basic problem.

It truly affects the design of the whole product in a very negative way.

It's actually easy.

Samsung prioritized look over thinness.

Since the S7, Samsung has generally opted to go a few decimal points of a MM thicker to put in more features and bigger batteries, that have allowed them to also keep thinner/smaller camera bump

Apple is still thinking that the device overall must be as thin as possible. Which leads to smaller overall volume inside, and unfortunately for cameras, there's a physics problem where theres a limit with how close you can put the lens to the sensor. Forcing a bump

Embarrassing would be constant tab and apps reloading, like the iPhone 6 does. It's not hard to run on 1 GB if you kill and unload everything that isn't currently displayed. Makes for a ****** user experience, let me just look that up in safari, goes back to app and everything has to load and login again.

That happens to me on my 7+, I couldn't understand why (first iPhone) until I spoke with someone at the Genius Bar. I am shocked everytime my iphone freezes or bluetooth acts up because I have been told for years that, "iPhones just work" from dang near every iPhone user. One of the things I do love about the iPhone is the standby time, goodness gracious and if I dim the light it sips battery.

Please don't "blow it" this time samsung... We are counting on you to put the pressure on Apple so they can innovate to maintain market share...

Thank you

Nice looking phone. I love the edgeless curved screen on my s8. But I wonder how big this thing is. With the S8 you can easily use the phone in one hand. Not so sure about the Note 8.

I don't like the aspect ratio..

Note people are pretty loyal and with the skipped year I'm sure Samsung will sell as many as they can make.

So, it’s basically the Samsung audio jack.

For Samsung-compatible headphones, while the rest of the world is using Bluetooth.

See how that works?

The s8 works fine with any old set of headphones. I am sure the Note 8 does also. But if you want you can use BT headphones, those also work fine. Having multiple options is great.

My S8 is doing fine with the latest updates. Still blazing fast. And having an SD card is great for expanding storage.

Great specs (except for the useless headphone jack - this phone won't age well). But not sure I'm a fan of this weird curving of the screen around the edges.... don't you have to constantly rock the phone back and forth to read the text that ends up along the side of the phone, and doesn't it distort images? I prefer a flat screen and a nice frame around it, like iPhones have. No distortion (warping) and easy to read while on the go.

Not directed at me, but I can provide my perspective. I've had an iPhone since the 3GS came out in 2009. While I'm not looking at switching to Android, if I did none of the things you listed would be an issue for me. I pretty much try to use platform agnostic services as much as possible. I don't use iCloud, everything is in OneDrive and Dropbox. Keychain and wallet aren't used as my passwords and financial data are stored using 1Password which is also cross-platform. I don't use Apple Music or purchase from iTunes, I buy my music from Amazon and sync using iTunes Match and use Spotify and Groove for streaming. Most of my work is done in Microsoft Office which has comparable apps on Android and Windows. I've never used Apple Pay, it isn't any less convenient to pull a card out of my wallet than it is to pull out my cellphone.

About the only Apple specific things I use are Find Friends and iMessage. There are also some apps I really like, such as those by Readdle, that aren't on Android. I'm sure there are equivalent apps in the Play store but I don't want to have to relearn how I do things if I don't have to.

I guess I've gone out of my way to ensure I'm not locked into any ecosystem. I like having the freedom to switch at will with minimum fuss even though I've used Apple products for eight years.

That's exactly how I use my phone. The only thing I use that's Apple specific is iMessage and since most of my friends and family use Android phones I won't miss that either. I use Google Photos because I have unlimited storage, so I went right back to it after having to deal with the iCloud storage warnings after a week of use.

Looks like an epic fail to me. The lack of hard buttons, the curved edges, the non-replaceable battery, the remote control -like aspect ratio. At least they retained the headphone jack. It seems I am going to stay with Samsung Galaxy Note 3 for ever.

I was rocking my Developer Edition Note 4 and could have lived with it for a very long time. But I just got fed up with Verizon and switched to T-Mobile. The 4 worked but I didn't get all the T-Mobile goodies (like WiFi calling) so I picked up a V20. Note a bad phone with a great DAC and replaceable battery but I missed the S-Pen too much. So I pre-ordered.

Put iOS on this and you have a deal.

Or, let the Apple Pencil work with the iPhone. That is the real advantage of the Note (for Note people.)

The accuracy of the S-Pen on the small screen makes easy to avoid the click-bait around the magnet links on torrent sites... ;)

Not sure the issue with the headphone jack. It works well, just like any other. And the phone is waterproof so I guess Apple was full of c&%^&p saying you could not have a waterproof phone and a headphone jack.

No the text does not go into the rounded part of the edge, but gets really close so it displays a lot. The curve is really to give you the infinity look with the display running the full width of the phone. Sort of like how an infinity pool looks with no transition line from water to sky.

Riiiiiiiight. That's total BS. My 6+ (with 1GB) can't even cache a single web page. Has to hit the network EVERYTIME I leave the page and go back.

Are you really comparing a 2+ years old phone versus the latest?
My 7+ with 2GB caches several web pages with no hassle. So what?

Android is memory hungry. 6GB of RAM doesn't translate into anything really manipulable by the user. Probably is a must for the new camera that requires far more memory storage for data processing than before. The every same that happened with iPhone and iPad last year. On average, Android requires double the memory of iOS for the same functionalities. Samsung's trying to present a need as a feature advantage (and it's legit) but it isn't. Memory is not a weapon in the phone war.

To take it even further, the thinness IMO has to do with Jony's ego. It's about how it looks under soft light or in some museum...not how it sits on the table without a case. As many have already said in other threads, form over function.

The camera bump is a visually distinguishing feature which designers strive for. It's how products become iconic (white iPod earbuds, iMac chin). But it should never take presedents over the functionality. A slightly thicker body could certainly add functionality in a larger and longer battery life.

Wow... they are being very generous for former Note 7 owners.
That $425 trade-in credit even applies to phones that are several years old.

http://www.samsung.com/us/galaxy/note8/Note7Promo/

The catch... if you send it in and it has any defects (cracks, deep scratches, dead battery), they only credit you $25 and bill you the balance. Normal wear is fine.

So go hit up Best Buy and grab a $60 S5 and get $425 trade in credit for it. ;)

Apple has not invented Bluetooth. The development is done with Bluetooth SIG (8 members and founded by Ericsson) and Galaxy S8 was first phone to implement 5.0. The technology itself was invented by Jaap Haartsen while working at Ericsson.

Apple has been member of Bluetooth SIG only since 2015...

That's correct. Apple didn't invent Bluetooth and avoided pushing it until a low energy specification came out. But Apple has been "involved" with Bluetooth SIG as a sort of advisor since 2011. Being formally a participant in Bluetooth Special Interest Group makes sense only if you want to contribute. Apple became promoter in 2015 because they had to contribute and propose a few tools (in the low energy department and multichannel audio).

Apple also said, they needed the internal space to go forward in smartphone tech.
Perhaps that is the reason why a s8/note 8 needs a chin/bezel on the bottom instead of also having an infinity display on the bottom.
the iphone 8 is rumored to have no chin on the bottom.

Apple used the space from the headphone jack for the Taptic engine.
As for the lower bezel, that has nothing to do with the headphone jack. Look at the teardown.
The display covers a portion of the space used by the jack.
From all accounts, it looks like it was simply a design choice to match the upper portion that houses the camera and earpiece.
It's visually balanced this way.

Makes sense. On the S8 there is a real thin band on top for the camera and ear piece. And the same thin band on the bottom. It looks like they tried to balance the look by having bands on top and bottom.

Ok,
So apple has designed a good workaround for that on the iphone 8 then. Making the status bar around the notch, to achieve the look of symmetry with the borderless bottom.
Can' t wait to see all the reactions when samsung ditches the headphone jack next year.
That is essentially were the market is going right now.
