Childproof straight up gimmick just lock your phone or teach your kids to behave.

Has nothing to do with behaving kids or not. Having this option enables your phone to basically reconfigure itself to just show apps the kids can use and nothing else (from what I understand). That's a pretty huge feature for anyone with children. You don't have to worry about ACCIDENTAL deletions of photos, setting changes, etc

It's not a question of a child doing it on purpose.

And as Dave said earlier - this is a function that has been greatly asked for in iOS.

Well, at least Apple gets possible real-world feedback about its possible designs before releasing. Makes for a better product. If you can have Samsung do all the prototyping, then it's a win. :p

They even dropped the ball during the keynote. One of the persons said that the new fit allows you to leave your phone behind and do everything on the wearable, heart rate, music, notifications etc ..Then the other person introduced the heart rate sensor on the phone :)

Not really. The Galaxy Gear Fit also has a heart rate monitor built in.

How is that dropping the ball? Not everyone is going to get both devices

Who wants to work out while constantly monitoring his/her heart rate with a 5.1 inch phone that is going to be mighty hard to even unlock with one hand using the finger print touch and/or patterns? Especially when you can buy something like this for less than 30 bucks ?

Let's see how long it takes for this thread to break 1000!

Come on. Just how many ways are there to say that Samsung rips ideas off?

nah, it's just basically the same thing that happens all the time whenever any competition of Apple's is talked about..

Person A: THEY COPIED EVERYTHING ITS A BLATANT RIPOFF, SHAMESUNG, DUNGSUNG, CRAPSUNG!!! GAHRUHAURHAURHAUHRUAHRURHru

Person B: THATS NOT TRUE! everything in the S5 was done prior to the iphone, sure, They might not be 100% original ideas, but they're allowed integrating new tech into their devices

Person A: YOURE A SAMSUNG SHILL!

Person B: YOURE AN APPLE FANBOY!

rinse Repeat

I really have to spell this out for you?

If you have the Galaxy Fit - it has a heart rate sensor - no phone needed. If you don't have a Fit - you can use your phone. It might not be optimal for every use case (you don't HAVE to use fingerprint unlocking by the way - or any locking)

I was questioning how Samsung dropped the ball based on the OP comments. It's not like the Fit doesn't have a HR sensor - so they were correct - you can leave your phone behind.

Because its a useless feature, not unlike many that were present in the S4 but have apparently now been removed on the S5..If Samsung thinks that people who cannot afford to buy the fit or other wearable devices (Some of which can be had for less than 30 dollars) would be running or doing exercise while constantly monitoring their heart rate through the 5.1 smartphone (usually with a case on) then i think they really need to think hard and long ;) ! The reason why i mentioned "Dropped the ball" was because they stressed (I think it was that features arent there for the sake of being there but because they perform a key function bla bla bla..Simplicity and giving the features that the user actually will end up using..Making things CLUTTER FREE (another thing Jony Ive stressed on as well) etc etc..No matter how you or samsung sugar coat it the heart rate sensor on the S5 is going to be gimmick just like the bunch of features on the S4 that were really never used by the majority of the owners.

How do you know the other things have been removed. Perhaps they just didn't highlight them because they are previous generation OS/hardware elements. Perhaps they just focused on the new stuff? TBD I guess

The phone is ANT+ compatible. That's a good thing. You can get a variety of monitoring devices without being forced to get a Fit.

I still don't see your reasoning for it being completely useless or that Samsung dropped the ball in their assertions during the keynote. But we're not going to see eye to eye on that I guess. To each their own. I'm also not making assumptions just because something was or was not mentioned in the keynote (IE - eye scrolling, air view, etc)

I guess they could have not removed other things, but it was mentioned by someone on the GS5 thread that they were removed.

My line of thinking was more like, " Samsung says its focusing on features that users will actually use in routine and will be helpful" that seemed to be the theme of the entire event "Giving customers what they want and will end up using rather than just bloat and features/gimmicks" .. Yet the heart rate monitor on the back of a large 5" inch phone that needs to be unlocked through swiping a finger over the home button (Damn tough with one handed use) seems to be a feature that I see tough as an acceptable way to workout for the vast majority. Will people be running while holding the Galaxy S5 in front of them monitoring their heart rates? I don't see this happening...I still wouldnt use it if it were available on a 3.5 inch iphone 4 as that would be too impracticle to whip out a phone from a pocket while working out to monitor heart rate..These things are best left for wearables and or the equipment one is working out on..

One quick question..Is the new touch Wiz and the health apps available to GS4 or GS3 users?

Investing in a water-resistant case would've likely been a lot cheaper than the repairs/replacements for those two iPhones, most likely. Sorry about that.

You're right. Buying a lifeproof or some other waterproof case wouldve been cheaper than the deductible on getting a replacement from the phone insurance company. But those cases are freaking huge and ungainly. That's why I didnt have one. But, more phones are adding the water resistance feature to them. unfortunately they're all Android models. I would love it if apple would add conformance to IP67 as a feature. That would allow the phone to get submerged for a few seconds without ruining it.

I would like that aswell..This is the best thing about the GS5 in my books...

What on earth are you doing with you iPhone that it gets wet? You go and swim with it? How on earth can somebody let their 600 plus dollar phone fall into water? Or do you throw your clothing in the waching machine with your iPhone still in it?

Can someone explain the thought behind this fingerprint scanner implementation? I was watching a video of it and you have to swipe vertically which basically makes it impossible to do one handed as your thumb naturally rests at an angle, not in a vertical position. And the video I saw it was quite unreliable if you swiped your finger at an angle. Also when setting it up this person swiped 8 times in a row - 6 with their index finger and twice with their thumb. But it didn't appear that they were setting up different fingers. And they never moved their finger around or changed their grip. Makes me think the swipe will have to be a lot more precise because you're not capturing different angles/directions.

A bit simplistic. There is also Subgroup D.Subgroup , because they probably belong somehow to Group B, but they are in denial. People who claim to be tech agnostic, but somehow lacking the ability to be level headed. For example: a person from Group A makes a ridiculous posting. Then you will see a person from Subgroup D attacking and engaging him. In the same thread, there will be lots of postings from Group B with equally ridiculous statements. But the person from Subgroup D will stay conveniently quiet.

And if one of Group C trying to point out some shortcomings of, or criticising Company, for example, S or G, then persons from Subgroup D will be defending said Companies S or G, no matter what. It is so laughable and predictable at times.

Except once again - you're assuming the phone has to be locked via fingerprint or code. You don't have to enable that.

Not that it negates the rest of your use case. It's possible that even though they marketed the scanner in regards to fitness - the bigger use case would be in other scenarios.

Personally - I would have put the sensor on the home button if that was technologically possible. The reason is - there's no screen on the back. It would be easy enough to have the phone faced away and use the HR monitor when using equipment - but the screen is faced away. It's not impossible - and not having used it - I don't know whether it would be awkward or not.

Regardless - although brought up in marketing and the keynote - I don't believe there's a huge percentage of people who are going to buy a phone given that one hardware option. Other things (screen size, speed, OS, camera, etc) are more deciding factors.

This I don't get. Most people are on 2 year contracts so the upgrades would generally be S3 to S5, and iPhone 5 to iPhone 6. Granted Apple will get a lot more 5S to 6 upgrades than Samsung will get S4 to S5 upgrades, thats because of Apple's fanboys though.

Also I actually think the HTC One and Sony's Z1 and (by the time the S5 is released then Sony will have the Z2 out) are better phones which are on Android.

I just meant it would be nice for a major revision. If 5S users wait for the 6S then even better, if they don't though it does not matter.

I respect Sony for making the Z2 waterproof
