I feel that Samsung do the following timetable these days:

  • Watch rumors coming from Apple - Develop & Release a wide range of these hoping they will get a hit
  • Watch apple come out with latest tech
  • Copy that tech - Fingerprint sensor, gold?

Ahh so all the other fitness band makers are just watching Apple rumors and copying them too?

People, please stop the snarky hate towards any non-Apple company. I get that Samsung and Apple don't have the best history together, but seriously... what else do you expect from Apple's competitor(s)? They see Apple's success so of course they will try and mimic it. And when they do, everyone here treats them like crap. I know that if I were Samsung, I'd do the same thing. Sure, in an ideal world, they would be just as innovative as Apple... but not everyone can do it, clearly Apple is superior in this regard, and many others as well, of course. It's not like what they are doing is putting Apple out of business, so please, let Samsung do what they do, even if it may seem worthy of mocking (because they 'copy' Apple). And, obviously, they do include features not found on iPhones... so I wouldn't even say they 'copy' so much anyways (yes, I'm aware of the many many lawsuits involving this kind of stuff).

But in the end, all these companies are doing are making smartphones... they can't be radically different from one another, they are all the same thing at heart; smartphone are smartphones. So really, no need for the rudeness towards competitors guys... It's saddening. I know it's cliché but why can't we all just get along? :)

Because Samsung doesn't have their own customers to listen to

And indeed, if you actually watched the presentation, you would see how much emphasis they put on adding features to the phone based on what customers want...rather than Apple's approach of telling customers what they want. You've honestly never heard an iPhone user say, "Oh I wish...

-I could lock certain files or folders"
-I could switch modes so I don't worry when I pass the phone to my kid"
-I could wirelessly charge my phone"
-My phone was water resistant"
-My phone wouldn't die when I'm running low on battery"

There's not even rumors of Apple attempting addressing these issues, ones a lot of people face on a daily basis. As much as I love my Apple products, to be honest, I found myself saying "wow" many more times during this presentation than any of Apple's recent ones.

Well, it’s official: the iPhone 6 will not have a larger display. For a 4.7” screen, it would need a 555 PPI. If Samsung could not increase their PPI beyond 441 for the S5, in fact they even lowered it by a little (and let’s not forget they design and manufacture their own screens, thereby lowering component costs), then Apple will certainly not be able to do so while keeping their high profit margins on their flagship product. I guess we’ll have to put up with the 4” size for at least the next 2 years...

You think maybe the PPI was chosen for cost purposes? You don't think Apple could demand a higher PPI yield for their products? I'm glad you're so sure.. You should be an analyst

Not real impressive on the fingerprint sensor… I wish they would have tried a finger they didn't scan to show it actually would fail (as it should) on a finger you didn't program in.

Looks awkward, but maybe it's just the way the guy was using it????

well played HTC... well played

Apple release a phone in gold, Samsung release a phone with a gold backing.
Apple release a phone with a fingerprint sensor, Samsung release a phone with a fingerprint sensor.

I have a small feeling Samsung are copying Apple! We all knew that already, of course.

they are out of ideas.S5 is very disappointing.
and that design is so dated, back looks really ugly.
the only outstanding android phone is Sony's Z2.the design of Z2 is really awesome.
but being an iPhone user,I'll eagerly wait for iPhone 6.if the screen is not larger,I might give Sony Z2 a try this time around.

So to recap:
September 2013 iPhone 5s: fingerprint sensor, faster device, better camera and a gold color.

February 2014 Galaxy S5: fingerprint sensor, faster device, better camera and a gold color.

That's marginalizing quite a bit there...

Well....not a good start.....

Lol poor HTC - I really feel kinda bad for them. They DO make pretty great devices....if only their Marketing department could handle things.

I thought the GS4 was somewhat disappointing. The GS5 really leaves things open. HTC (among others) still has time. I just want competition.....someone to call Samsung on their bs and push them. I don't doubt they can make a great device - but over the last two years, they haven't needed too.

I upgraded from a Skyrocket IIs - so I can't complain at all about the S4 - love it. But if I came from the S3 - not so sure. My wife has an HTC - it's a great phone. I just liked some of the camera and other features that the S4 had. (Which we've discussed before)

Compatibility with any BLE device, for starters. Haven't heard otherwise but I'm assuming this requires a Galaxy series phone. Won't even get into the looks but nearly everyone wants Apple to create a watch that looks similar to a nice watch, not a plastic fuelband/Up/etc. Payment options built into the watch, possibly NFC but definitely BLE. Durability, which kind of falls in line with the "looks" as we can assume Apple will opt for a metal/sapphire watch.

This "watch" has all the sensors we want and it tells time. That's the bare minimum for me.

Understood - This phone does have all the alert functions that the Pebble has too I believe. So for me - that's in their favor. I'm not going to get a Samsung Fit. Especially since I have a Pebble now. I think it's a decent device. It's compatible (so they have said) with 16 devices in the Galaxy line. So If you don't have a Samsung Galaxy phone - you'd never be in the market for one anywa.

It will be interesting to see if Apple's wearable is cross platform at all (or independent) or if it's only an iOS compatible device. If it is only for those with iPhones and iPads - I don't "begrudge" Samsung for their device only being compatible with their phones...

Ha, I almost thought you were being serious!
I am.

I still have an LG 'dumb' phone. The screen is ~2" across and it shows me what I need; the number I'm calling or that's calling me. It fits in my pocket, is nearly indestructible, and does what I want; it makes calls. For anything else I use my iPad or Mac.

I suppose, when my current phone dies, I could adapt to a 4" iPhone screen, though it feels like I'm talking into a 2x4. As far as 5+' phones or phalets are concerned, no thanks. Too big, too hard to carry around, too awkward and fragile for stuffing in my jeans and heading out for who knows what. I might get an iPhone when the old LG bites the dust, that is if Apple still offers a 4" model. Better yet I might get used one with a 3.5" screen.

Meh

I feel the same way about this phone release as I did when the 5s was released. No biggie. The upgrades are weak at best.

PS. To those of you that say samsung is copying the iphone fingerprint scanner, there were phones before the iphone to do that, one of which was the moto atrix.

Um, and why exactly 'must' Apple double the resolution again in order to increase the display size? They don't have to, you know. They could move to a new resolution thats more common, like 1080. So long as they keep the aspect ratio 16:9 (which they no doubt will), current apps could scale up to the larger display just fine and still maintain a PPI on-par with the iPad Air, while reworked apps will probably take very little time using new APIs in iOS 7.

And if you've been seeing what Apples been doing in iOS 7 and how they're actively encouraging developers to adopt AutoLayout, its fairly safe to say Apple wants developers to adopt AutoLayout so apps are more resolution/screen-independent.

AutoLayout does not re-master your images/icons/graphics, which would have to be done to prevent your images from looking like this on a non-1:1 or 1:4 pixel scale. If they don't conform to this ratio, every single app developer will have to make a choice as to whether or not spend the time and money required to update all their graphics/images/icons to the new PPI to prevent them from looking ugly/distorted/blurry on the new display. And considering it took many developers (including high-profile ones, like Google and Rockstar) very long to simply update their apps to the taller iPhone 5 size (and there are still some apps that haven’t updated to the iPhone 5 size yet, 1.5 years later), a much larger change requirement of re-mastering all images/icons/graphics used in the app would take even longer and may show a negative cost/benefit for some developers. Additionally, Apple itself would have higher costs in updating all the graphics in their own apps as well.

See this and this for more specifics.

Meh, looks rather boring and unimaginative to me personally? Nice to see it is waterproofed, something they should ALL be doing, following Sony's lead.

But the S5 has nothing to offer above my Nexus 5 which looks a lot better I think, also Samsung HAS copied the idea of a finger print scanner, NOT in the implementation of one, but with the fact it's been placed into the home button.

actually it is stolen, but stolen from Motorola, just like how apple did it

Samsung - Inspired by Apple

And apple, inspired by Android

Didn't Apple introduce a fingerprint sensor on its phone like at least 6 months ago? ha ha...

Okay so now when Apple comes out with a heart rate sensor and things like that in their new phone and watch, they won't be copying? When Apple does something another company did first, they're improving the design and being more innovative but when another company copies Apple, shun them

Except Apple copied Motorola by putting a finger print scanner on a phone.

It's all about the implementation there pal.....

And, as many fingerprint scanner "experts" will tell you - the technology Apple used for TouchID is VERY different from that used in the typical fingerprint scanner (the one used in just about every other smartphone that's tried it).

When will people get this? It's not about matching features (fingerprint scanner for fingerprint scanner). Its about how those features are implemented....THAT'S what matters.

In this case, it would seem Apple wins handily.
