Smartphone screens are tall & narrow. If you unfolded one you'd end up with a square aspect ratio screen. Not sure what that would be good for. Certainly not for looking at pictures or video.
When you double your screen real estate, you can effectively use multi windows in the layout just like a PC or laptop or tablet. This is also prototype days. There will be hundreds of form factors, one for each and every possible application.

My Passport has a square screen and I like this phone.

Why does it bother people that Samsung wants to push forward with new tech? Nobody is asking you to buy it. In the long run all parties benefit - new tech has to be introduced first to be perfected. Somebody has to be first, and Samsung is stepping up to the plate.

I expect the first few generations of this to suck. The only reason to release it is to be the first.

Or to demonstrate a proof of concept and then sell screens to Apple.

Samsung is making a lot more money these days selling smartphone components than selling smartphones.

If Apple was developing this, we'd already have a number of pictures, case prototypes and specs to discuss. How is it that Samsung has secrecy locked down better than Apple these days? Mind you, many of the leaks of the recent years have come directly from Apple. I miss the surprises of the past keynotes.

Maybe apple will innovate on the cutting edge and add a touchscreen to a laptop. Mindblowing.

Well probably, if the were lucky enough to get their hands on some of those Samsung flexible displays.

Is only samsung capable of developing flexible displays?! LOLS

There will be plenty more that will prefer to develop the tech without the spotlight of the press/media. LG for one are into this and Apple may never intend to use Samsung displays in the future. Or for that matter, how do you know that apple isn't developing this in house by acquiring a start-up who is developing the technology?!

It's far more than that. The average person checks his or her phone every 12 minutes - which adds up to a grand total of 80 times a day. How many of those uses will involve them unfolding the device. It could be a LOT higher than 10,000 bends in 2 years.
You are assuming the phone would be unfolded for even a cursory "check." Not sure why would you assume that when the article clearly stated the phone will be perfectly usable while folded. You only unfold if you need the screen-estate. As such I think kiranmk2 was about right, or even over estimating, with 10-20 folds per day.

Well it's Samsung, so they're probably going to botch it. But it will still interesting to observe.
botch it? they sell more phones globally than iphone, honda and toyota and outsell bmw and mercedez. companies tha focus on selling large quantities have more to lose , when products go bad.

Samsung could make a phone that turned water into wine, copper into gold, and gave back massages and I wouldn't spend a dime on it. Samsung is a despicable company and they will NEVER get another dollar from me for any of their name-brand products.

Mark
lol.... I bet they get quite a bit from you, even if you buy only Apple. #irony

I'll be the first to buy one of these, unless it costs 'Apple price' (aka over 999 USD).
Premium Android phones cost that much in-spite of coming with a free OS. I would contend that premium Android phones are a ripoff, considering one is paying just for the hardware.

It's also unlikely even your premium Android phone will see any software updates. Maybe 1 if you're lucky but even many premium phones never see them.

I am hoping Google has a better model of addressing the software updates, but the question is what is the incentive. Google - the ad company, already is monetizing the Android users, nothing is going to change with the change in stance about software updates.

That’s the former Apple.

I was not really comparing iOS with Android but iOS (mandatory Appstore) with MacOS (optional Appstore)

lol. Really?
We have been hearing apple is doomed for so long. Have you seen it materialise? Not yet. It will take a while.

Just check apple share price if you are still not convinced, a healthy indicator of how thousands of analysts and investors think about the future of apple.

I have a 15 year old Samsung A-650 foldable phone, one of the first cell phones with a camera. It still folds just fine, boots up, and the battery still charges. If I could find a replacement battery I'd reactivate the phone with my carrier and carry it around just for the novelty. Here's a photo of one for sale (not mine, which I'll keep.). It was sort of novel to watch people's reaction when you asked them to pose for phone.

He meant a piece of plastic or metal. not something with a hinge.

This is one phone I won't stand in line for. It has no appeal to me. I like a slim phone and if I need more screen real estate I can use my iPad.

Bendable displays have been coming since 2004. This is the longest running vaporware in human history. Not sure why the hype machine starts up every so often, but here we are again.

I'll believe it when I see them for sale at Best Buy.

I'm still waiting for Nintendo to release their SuperCD for my SNES.
