Ha ha ha

I'll never change my Omega Speedmaster for a digital watch. And if I bought a digital clock I never could change it for a Samsung watch!

Silly other company.

You may overtake Apple in a new market, but only after Apple has solidified it first ;)

Samsung found out the hard way that it a lot harder to copy an Apple product before it actually exists. I'm sure they'll do a much better job in 2015!

Excepted, given that it is just a $300 accessory.

guess how much this one is :D

50,000 is better than none.

not in economic terms. Considering the cost of r&d, design, manufacturing, advertising, etc, they are many millions in the hole. It would have been better not to do it at all. I'd rather have $0 than $1m of debt.

Now will they be able to make all that up in the long run? Possibly. But most likely Samsung will simply rip off the iWatch and then all that pre-development work will be a sunk cost. oh well.

Tim Cook on Stage:

"Next up, iWatch"

"We had an amazing launch weekend. We sold over 1 million iWatches in just the first week alone. This is incredible. People love iWatch. We made a video to show how people love our products."

"You know, here at Apple we make the best products. Our competition tried to sell a smart watch, but they only sold 50,000 models in the first months. We sold 20 times that in one week alone. This is amazing."

..........

But I'm sure they have something in development RIGHT NOW that will look and function extremely similar to the one that Apple is about to release, that they have been working on for YEARS, but Apple will have just barely beat them on the release by a few months........

But it's gonna be really innovative and great and original and innovative and everything @___@

Watches

Maybe it's because I'm swiss or just a matter of taste, but I don't see me wear some computer watch which I'll have to upgrade every two years or so. It just doesn't compare to a beautiful automatic watch which one can wear for years

Sure... a little more than $299 if you want a bit of quality, but still cheaper than an iPhone 5C. ...and lasting much longer as well, I guess :)

Not to sound like an Apple fanboy or anything but when Apple is the last to adopt a new technology after everyone else has been doing it for years, it's because they only ever deliver "ripe" products. They don't experiment and see whether it sells, they always go for the kill. It's just the way they do stuff. Other release tons of stuff and just see what sticks.

While Samsung is the first major electronics company to come out with a smart watch...
Wait, what? Has somebody completely forgotten about Sony here? I'm pretty sure they qualify as a "major electronics company", and the original LiveView smartwatch--which was an Android sidecar, not unlike this one--was previewed back at the end of 2010, three years ago. Even the LiveView2 shipped before the Samsung.

In fact, given that Samsung originally built their consumer electronics business around copying Sony TVs and such before they got into copying Apple products, you could claim that the Gear is a copy of the Sony watch if you wanted to be mean.

It's a shame. Samsung have so much potential as a company, if they'd just slow down and put together some kind of long-term strategy. Everything is just 'now, now, now'.

Think about it – who saves the day with working screens for Apple? Samsung. Builds the chips? Samsung. Supplies memory (until very recently)? Samsung. What SSD are many Mac users moving to? Samsung 840s. The list could go on.

They've got the manufacturing and technical capabilities, just not the business structure or direction. They need some serious executives, a strategy, and some decent product designers and software developers.

Then you've got yourselves a serious competitor. Like Google.

Meh, maybe it's just me – I don't have the hate towards Samsung that many do on these forums. I appreciate that my 5s might not be here without them, or my iMac, or my MBP, or my iPads, or my girlfriend's iPhone 5, or her MBA, or...

More e-waste.

Who ever had the big -stupid- idea for watches in the first place? The e-waste phones now out have everything except the means to grill a burger. I don't see the point of dumb ideas and why they get so much coverage on here?

Smart post. I like posts like this very much. Thank you!

I'll never change my Omega Speedmaster for a digital watch.

One of my all time favourite watches (I am picking up a 3570.50.00). My daily wear is a Seamaster Pro....

After the Speedmaster I'm going to have to convince "her" that I absolutely need a Submariner, then I'll stop buying watches, I swear. :D

Yes but that is a nice watch. A nice watch is a classy thing to have. A "smart watch" is about as cool as clipping your phone to your belt.

I don't mean to offend anyone who clips their phone to their belt, my aim is mainly at those who think it makes them look important.

First to market ???? Huh ???

I know Pebble was there before samsung, and I think there were a few others as well. I have been seeing an ad for one on MR for a long long time.

Interesting list of smart watches including one from 2004. http://www.smartwatchnews.org/smartwatch/
