This is innovation that far exceeds the notch. Apple will adopt this in 2022-24 when Samsung minimized all the risks and people embrace the phone/tablet feature/function.

MR forum members will hate on this until Apple introduces something similar 4-6 years from now, and claim innovation

Phone/Tablet combination is rather appealing, couple that with USB-C and this can dock to accessories. One device to rule the business persons carry-on technology. Apple users will be carrying around their iPhone, iPad and/or MB/A/P with them.
It will be useless for them now and when Apple "invents" it, then it will finally make sense

It's ugly. The lights were turned off on purpose so as to hide its flaws. It's just theatre. Samsung claiming they have some new technology when it's not yet ready for public consumption. Nothing to be jealous about.

Maybe minor design changes will be made and their do not want the world to believe this is the final design. That being said we have all noticed that Apple had incorporated dark/black wallpaper on the iPhone notched screens. All companies do this to highlight their products strengths or key features, this is a common practice in the human modeling world as well. ;)

I’ve lost count of the number of companies using similar tech. It’s a gimmick for now until it proves its worth.

Innovations come in many forms. But aside that, isn't Apple already investing in the supposedly next-generation screens? MicroLED? To my understanding, Apple even made deals with some manufactories in order to develop these new type of screens. But I might be mistaken.
Apple does, IIRC, have a dedicated R&D lab for microLED in Japan, if not in more locations. I think MR covered it a year or two ago. I know they, Apple, have several patents for foldable displays, so hard to believe they don't have a finger on the pulse of this. Let's see what Samsung debuts. Will it be the next Google Glass or something people actually want?

Take away the case, and I bet it's still thick.

Samsung is pushing into rollable displays as well, imagine a cylinder device with a customizable size as per the users preference when rolling out to view information. Roll the screen away and you can use the cylinder as a phone, etc.

basically.. but the apple fanboys will deny it.[/QUOTE
Unfortunately it does as only the mods can delete it.
Was it thick, or wasn’t it?

but it's in a case, a larger case than it would normally be in, to disguise it.

you don't think apple does this with their phones that haven't been announced yet? hint hint.. they do.
Regardless. It is thick. Until proven otherwise.

They said they are ready for mass production in the following months. The phone is just hidden inside a case not to reveal how the final device looks before official announcement... Do you remember iPhone 4 being hidden in a case by Apple employees outside the campus?

Basically two devices in one, when in phone mode chances are the extra battery will assist immensely. MR users needs to figure out what their want, device too thin, no one wants a thin device, device too thick, why is it not thin. Some bipolar comments amount the MR crowd.

How’s the weather in Seoul today?

Anyway, lots of renders and lots of darkness when showing the physical manifestation. Little better than vapourware at this stage and without seeing it properly it could easily be two screens stitched together and another larger one taped on the back.

Literally nothing to see here and Samsung made sure of that with the ridiculous physical handling and almost pitch black presentation.

Are all of your presentations that rubbish?

Which they’ve copied from other well known manufacturers. One particular company makes such screens for cars. It’s not innovation if someone else has done it before you. It’s adaptation.

It is purposely obscured in a case to hide the design elements.
It was mentioned on stage.
Oh sure. Right. That’s why they showed a video of what it will look like. Right? Right???

It’s nothing but a chunky prototype in a dark room at this point with a flashy video of what might be. This was about what I expected. This is still several years out before it goes mainstream. No doubt Apple also has concepts like this squirreled away in a lab. The difference is that they hold their cards close to their vest.

I think this is great with a foldable phone. It really opens up ‘How can we make the smart phone era different’. And I’m sure it would be a very niche category with a high price tag, but I welcome change and something refreshing like a foldable phone. I’m not sure how practical it would be, but let’s see what it has to offer in the future. Good for Samsung. (And I say this as an iPhone fanatic.)

1984 people have Apple blinders on, will pay the tax hike and will do as told.

Pff. Foldable? Bwahahah. Apple already have foldable phone. Iphone 6 and 6 plus.
You’re late to the party, but funny, nonetheless.

Nope. I refuse to pay any higher than what I paid for XS Max. Anyone who does is a fool.

For a generation 1 product that will be shipping in the coming weeks/months this is a great first step. We know this is not vapourware at least. The display and design will only get better in the coming years.

I am going to laugh when they explain it is a tablet and a phone and as such $2,349 is very competitive.

Agreed. It's interesting. I think it's going to present the obvious hardware challenges, but the real question is the software side of the equation. Until this hybrid tablet/phone device becomes more common, it's going to be up to Samsung to develop the apps.
