I love new technology. I’m not really a consumer on devices, I like to create. I’d have to see how I could create artwork or graphics on that device to really make a decision on whether it’s something for me.

If it was just to make calls, read e-mails and use the internet, I’m not sure.

Not necessarily. Take a look at large format displays today - they are stitched together panels with zero visible seam. This might eventually be doable with something hand-held.

Where I draw a blank is on the utility for a folding phone as demonstrated because for me the larger screen still does not add anything of value from a use-case perspective, in the same way I don't see value in the large phones dominating the market today - they simply are too small to add any additional functionality for me over a 4" screen.

Now when we reach the point where something the size of a watch can produce a 4" screen image (via unrolling a screen or projection), then maybe the tech will be getting to a point where there is real utility in it, from my perspective.

It’s perspective with those large screens, where the bezel is narrow enough that at a distance the lines divided are very fine to a point where it blends into the object displayed when viewed at a distance. Move closer and you will see those narrow bezels. With a smaller screen device viewed at a short distance it will be observable.

Look at the infinity edge display, it has a roll seem near its edges, move that display further from your eyes you will not see it anymore. Incorporate light reflection and refraction and and the illusion is bothersome.

Bingo Samsung is thinking along those lines to incorporate a rollable display in a watch size device.

Bone crushing, world dominating innovation at its best. Like I've said before, when Samsung innovates the whole industry benefits. Meanwhile at Apple... Updates that brick hardware, and power mats that will never see the light of day....aaaaaand...Animojis . Lol

How many phones are now sporting the notch?

Apple is practically serving as the design template for the entire smartphone industry.

Im pretty sure Apple is already working on this.

If you said Apple was working on silicone, I would have believed you. Their partner with established companies regarding display tech for reasons due to mass production, quality control, cost, etc. Even LG has recently passed Apples QC/QA process for AMOLED mobile displays. Samsung is a veteran in this field, Apple has yet to enter this field on its own.

That doesn’t make Apple’s notch innovative, just look at all smartphones sporting a screen
Haha. I could swear I was using a full screen touchscreen phone before the iPhone was announced, does that make the crappy phone I was using the first real innovator. Wish I could remember what it was.

No need to even use Google services. You know that right?
Well, I’m concerned by android phoning home 300+ time as day.

I don’t get it. My phone is about 7mm thick so if I fold that it will be like 1.4cm thick. That is kinda really thick.

And since you should make it fold, all the component should be crammed in both side. That means lesser battery or performance.

And if it is unfold that is about 7.9 inch screen I guess? Well... that is too small for a tablet you know... People do not need small tablet because of their huge. phone. That is why small tablet including ipad mini literally died.

So just tell me this.

Isn’t just buying two devices: a good and thin phone that has lots of battery and performance such as iphone and galaxy s9 + a good big tablet such as ipad much more better than buying foldable phone that has less power, less performance, and not huge enough for tablet?

And, $60B in net income, lol.

Samsung wants to be Apple so bad.

The bone crushing, world dominating tech Samsung just put on display today, says otherwise. But keep feeling proud of over paying for inferior products with a fruit logo. Smh.

This is innovation that far exceeds the notch. Apple will adopt this in 2022-24 when Samsung minimized all the risks and people embrace the phone/tablet feature/function.

MR forum members will hate on this until Apple introduces something similar 4-6 years from now, and claim innovation

Phone/Tablet combination is rather appealing, couple that with USB-C and this can dock to accessories. One device to rule the business persons carry-on technology. Apple users will be carrying around their iPhone, iPad and/or MB/A/P with them.
They'll claim innovation bc Apple will likely innovate a way to make this practical, functional, and not look like a Zune when folded up

I think it’s unfair to say inferior. The OS is lacking for sure, but the tech inside says a different story when you compare apples for, well...apples, currently the A12 is kicking down the door.

Are we forgetting the “Essential” phone that sported a notch. Who care what if the notch is narrower, wider, taller, it is all a notch. Who cares if you incorporate 10 cameras in there or 1, it is still a notch. The other companies just followed Apples notch direction as their products are viewed as chic in the smartphone demographic.

Remember when heroine chic was in, yeah not so anymore. Just means generations make some bad choices and have no clue what classy is. The notch is anything but classy. 2018 iPad Pro front is a classy design.

How many of those OEMs are leaders in display tech with bone crushing, world dominating tech? Absolutely bone crushing. Meanwhile at Apple... Nuff said.

I’ve never minded the notch. One companies solution to incorporate the speaker/earpiece into the rim of the phone would seriously hurt the ear when pressed up against it, so I’m sympathetic to the notch until a better design is found.

So is this why we haven't yet seen the iPad mini 5? :D I mean Apple has updated almost everything in their catalog except for the iPad mini (and the Mac Pro).

As for Samsung, they will be selling the panel, just like how they are selling their OLED panels to everyone. So I would expect the likes of Xiaomi to come up with a copy a year or two from now at half the price. :) We are already seeing the Chinese OEMs leapfrogging Samsung into the bezel-less era (tear drop notch, sliding, etc).

And for the wild rumor mill: upcoming new iPad mini is also an iPhone? :D

At the end of the day it is innovation. You can incorporate it into any shell, form, design all you want reality is this is a 1st generation product. When one compares the original iPhone, iPhone 4, iPhone 6 and iPhone X design, many will say iPhone 4 is classy and the best designed of the lot. The original being second. Product design language evolve, some for the better some for the worst, Apple is no exception.

IMHO iPhone 4 and 2018 iPad Pro have the best iOS device designs. MiMix 2 looks better than the iPhone X design.
