Are we forgetting the “Essential” phone that sported a notch. Who care what if that’s notch is narrower, wider, taller, it is all a notch. Who cares if you incorporate 10 cameras in there or 1, it is still a notch. The other companies just followed Apples notch direction as their products are viewed as chic in the smartphone demographic.

Remember when heroine chic was in, yeah not so anymore. Just means generations make some bad choices and have no clue what classy is. The notch is anything but classy. 2018 iPad Pro front is a classy design.
Oh and by the way, your beloved samsung tells that they will use notched display for their future devices.

Well good luck for that

For a generation 1 product that will be shipping in the coming weeks/months this is a great first step. We know this is not vapourware at least. The display and design will only get better in the coming years.

Don’t praise something that isn’t released.

With every iteration of Google and Samsung products, I make it a point to check them out in the store to get a real good impression. Nothing google or Samsung has made has impressed me. Samsung screens look great, but that’s about it.

People vote with their wallet, seems a lot of people prefer to wait for it to be done right, as told by Apple Sales figures.

We get it man, Apple isn’t first, they rarely are. And Apple could end up using this tech a few years down the line. If/when they do, everyone else will fizzle out because frankly - they did a sucky job in the efforts of being ‘first’. See AirPods, Apple Watch, iPhone, iPad.

I’ve never minded the notch. One companies solution to incorporate the speaker/earpiece into the rim of the phone would seriously hurt the ear when pressed up against it, so I’m sympathetic to the notch until a better design is found.

Point taken, however I thought Apple wanted everyone to use BT headphones. I have used phones with the earpiece/speaker on the rim of the device, no problem here, I just don’t press the device to my body. If I press the X to my ear it starts to cause pain, I adapted.

Basically two devices in one, when in phone mode chances are the extra battery will assist immensely. MR users needs to figure out what their want, device too thin, no one wants a thin device, device too thick, why is it not thin. Some bipolar comments amount the MR crowd.
Wrong! Please tell me what technology product sells so more when it gets more bulky and difficult to carry around?

Macrumors commenters:

Apple is too expensive, iPhones suck, nobody cares about tablets, and the iPad Pro cannot be a computer.

Also Macrumors commenters:

I can’t wait to pay Samsung $2000 for this phone that turns into a small tablet. Surely it will be able to replace all my devices.

People are accustom to routine and familiarity. Case in point, Windows in the 90’s had a high market share as many individuals who could afford it, were familiar with how to use the OS due to work requirements, plus there was compatibility. People generally do not like learning something new, it scare them. There are some exceptions, however for the most part people hate change.

People stick with iOS as their have invested into the ecosystem and reasons stated above.

Sometimes I wonder how nice and cozy this community is to the point that all the Android folks come here instead. :D

If you believe the rumor from earlier this year, Apple is bringing out a folding phone in 2020. Apple isn’t concerned with being first, second or tenth but they do care about being the best.

But I don’t think we’ll see a folding phone from Apple in 2020, and no matter how many months it takes for Samsung to bring this thing out, I doubt it will be very popular.

I don’t think I understand your question, maybe rephrase it or be direct.

However I will try to answer your question from what I understanding from it. IPhone 8/X got heavier compared to prior versions due to the glass back. IPad 3 got bulkier due to the Retina display. Selling well is subjective and I have only focused on Apple products.

Alien Ware laptops sell well as gamers who love portability don’t mind the “bulk” of the device for power, carry around is also subjective. Please define.

Similar technology to this has been around for a number of years - think the newspapers in Minority Report as an example of what e-paper might become. It's a technology that will happen. Not quite sure this is it though.

This is the cringeiest tech conference video I've ever seen.

The reason is that whoever produced this event did everything possible to make it be like an Apple presentation. Except it compromises in ways that are analogous to the Android ecosystem overall.

You have a guy using great language to describe how they hope developers will take up the effort Samsung is doing. But in the background there is this hopelessly pixelated stage prop.

There is a technology the company is very excited about. But no products or release dates that a customer might hope for.

People talk a lot of smack about Apple but this is literally the biggest competitor in the United States. I think Microsoft would do a better job than this at this point.

IPad Pro is a niche product that caters well to the graphic artists. Same with macOS circa 90’s it was used by the creative arts industry. Does that mean Apple should have not released a 2018 iPad Pro.

IPhone are expensive compared to prior years, those rose tinted glasses are in mint condition ;):p:D

Haha. I could swear I was using a full screen touchscreen phone before the iPhone was announced, does that make the crappy phone I was using the first real innovator. Wish I could remember what it was.

Well, I’m concerned by android phoning home 300+ time as day.
I don’t know about you but I had a Samsung Bada which had a full screen.

This is innovation that far exceeds the notch. Apple will adopt this in 2022-24 when Samsung minimized all the risks and people embrace the phone/tablet feature/function.

MR forum members will hate on this until Apple introduces something similar 4-6 years from now, and claim innovation

Phone/Tablet combination is rather appealing, couple that with USB-C and this can dock to accessories. One device to rule the business persons carry-on technology. Apple users will be carrying around their iPhone, iPad and/or MB/A/P with them.
So this a prototype but another company actually released one this week for sale. This is also a device type that was leaked about Apple several years ago, so it’s very possible Apple has been working on something like this for some time. There is one company who would know this. Samsung since up until recently, they were Apple’s primary screen provider. Here is an article from 2016 about an Apple patent from 2014 that sounds exactly like what Samsung just announce.

Apple actually designs devices to work elegantly and doesn’t release them until ready. Samsung gets wind of Apple’s work and rushes to market with a poorly designed copy of that idea, but it never catches on. Then when Apple releases what they had been working on all along, Droiders claim Apple Copied but in reality their patents protect their work because it predates the copies. Then when Apple’s true innovation is proven by adoption and actual use of the tech, android and Samsung switch to Apples way of doing it.

There are also self-healing materials, that was revealed in the labs over 15 years ago. What’s your point, the tech was not ready for consumer everyday use.

Sniff sniff, is it jealousy I smell. Let’s be honest here, Apple will go to Samsung for this tech in 4-6 years.

Another win for Samsung (and ultimately Android) while Apple is doing what exactly? Raising prices on crippled devices they won't share sales figures on? LOL

Before the Apple Watch was released, Samsung released 5 smartwatches, 4 of them were in 2014 alone. All 5 of those watches did not have any dedicated rotating/scrolling controls.

Once Apple Watch was released, Samsung stopped releasing new watches for almost a full year and then released the Samsung Gear S2. They took the form factor of the Moto 360 which everyone loved, and combined it with dedicated scrolling controls (something that Apple correctly solved with users using super small touch screens with their fingers).

This folding screen tech is a classic case of Samsung throwing spaghetti against the wall to see what sticks. Samsung starts with what new technology they can come up with, and try to cram it into as many new products that they can release. Sometimes it sticks, most of the time it doesn't. Apple starts with the UX, figures out what the problem is, and solves it using new technology.

I'm not saying Apple will never use folding screens, but so far, Samsung hasn't really solved any major UX issues with folding screens in that demo.

Are you calling the recently released 2018 iPad Pro as revolutionary in comparison to a bendable screen. One is stiff as a board permanently, the other can be manipulated.

Many companies include Apple have patents for things that may or may not be released or used. A patent is not a guarantee that Apple will use it, considering it had LiquidMetal for over 10 years and has only used it in the SIM eject tool.

So the industry is using Apples developed and design AMOLED tech, or is it Apple using Samsung. This is how the industry works, their share idea’s and concepts of where the mobile market is heading. How about Qi, did Apple invent that too and the rest of the industry is using it. Let get real here.

Every.

Year.

Samsung.

Hypes.

Foldable.

Displays.

Every year. They've been doing it for over a decade and the tech media goes ga-ga every time even though it's always the same deal. "Look at this neat technology we're working on that isn't in an actual product yet." They really need to just shut up and either get it on the market or stop with the hype.

Anyway, back to the oohing and ahhing until next year.

Right. I like how apple presentations where a fat guy comes out with his shirt un-tucked and says courageous things like removing headphone jacks on devices is the next messiah and the audience roars in applause. When they show an iPhone that is fully IP68 in 2018, audience applauded like they just watched Brad Pitt do the splits. Whenever an apple product plays catch up in some way years behind the industry standards, the audience is so baffled and their minds distorted by the reality distortion field generated they clap so hard and cheer like their favorite football team just won the Super Bowl.

Don't you worry, Samsung probably has this thing ready to be mass produced. Remember, Samsung actually makes products they sell. I'm still holding my breath for that Qi charging pad. Wait, how about a fast wireless charger that is at least 15w? Never mind that charging pad, how about a damn MacBook that I can actually touch screen with?

When you see something like this being sold to apple in 2022, I will come back and quote you about how innovative apple really is.

I'm sure the masking of the device on stage is not to prevent theft by apple - I'm sure they will not copy Samsung but probably buy the same screen tech from them in 2022. Samsung is protecting their IP design from Chinese theft.

Seriously? Did you not notice the 10+ other years before this when they've hyped this technology? No joke. They do it every single year and it has yet to show up in any products. When we get to the point where the guy at Best Buy can pull this out of the display and show it to me, then we'll talk. Until then, it's the longest running vaporware in tech history.

Every year before the iPhone X, Macrumor regulars like yourself have been complaining about how crappy OLED displays are. When iPhone X has it, then all of a sudden it's the next coming apple god. Trust me, you will see foldable displays hit mainstream.

Same thing goes with wireless charging - how it sucks, blah blah blah, now all I read are comments about how awesome it is. LOL. Really should be called Mac-hypocrites.
