my 2 cents

Apple has designed the Retina Display for the iPad. The 2 layer thing that separates the pixels from the signals, they have that patented. That's 7 years of locked down tech, which by that point, will be old news. Samsung is the only company that could prove that they can mass produce it, at this point. Patents show you how they did it, so Samsung now knows and are likely upset they didn't figure it out first, but they want in on the money, so why not make the components (plus, they're good at making components as in they have a low percentage of failed parts). In order for Samsung to have retina type display, they'll have to figure out a different way (even if it's ever so slightly different, as long as it doesn't infringe) or license from Apple (which returns some of that money back to Apple).

So those that think Samsung is supplying the Retina Display because they designed it are in for a wake up call. If they did, why wouldn't they put it in their tablets first? When Apple brought this tech to Samsung's manufacturing arm to make, the tablet arm was probably chastised for not thinking of it first.

I have a lot of Samsung stuff and Apple stuff. My home theater is all Samsung. Not sure if that makes me bias one way or the other.

Well that's nice of Samsung.

You know, considering Apple wants them virtually wiped off the face of the earth.

Right now, Samsung and Apple need each other.

Apple needs top notch displays for their iPad
Samsung needs apple to keep making iPhones so they can do their cloning trick.

Clearly, samsung is the only one in the wrong here... and you better believe that as soon as apple finds another display supplier that meets their demands, they will move away from Samsung...

Also, people may argue that they aren't going to move away from samsung, but the fact that they are ALREADY looking at other suppliers should be a warning to samsung.

Samsung should create a new product category instead of trying to compete and failing over and over.

Good for them that they have many subdivisions, which I would assume each run as a separate business. Their display subdivision is doing excellent.

It would be better if Samsung and Apple got along; they need each other (sort of, as Apple may never tie the knot to any vendor).

Samsung may have great technology but Apple has the brains to turn that technology into successful products.

No disrespect but...

Maybe Im going against the grain here a bit, but I have the Nexus and it is one bad mama jamma phone, the speed and AMOLED screen is sick. Im sorry but Samsung has the brains to turn stuff into successful products. Hardware wise I give it the edge over the 4S.

Some people may argue well its the Android software which makes its a crappy phone. I use both iOS 5.1 on my iPad and ICS on the phone and both are great IMO.

why are you continuing that conversation further? So what if he wants to cancel because he doesn't like a company.

If you had an opportunity to cancel a food order because you heard someone didn't wash their hands while making it. You would cancel it too.

It's not like no other companies will ever match the current Samsung retina either. If he wants to wait let him.

You're right, no biggie if someone wants to cancel their order. All good.

But the silliness of the issue is the hypocrisy. Apple is so litigation crazy, they're on an equal level with Samsung. Do I care? Nope.

Your food analogy isn't close to reality. The Restaurant (Apple) is picking their nose while they prepare your food...just like the farmer (Samsung) sneezed all over the vegetables they sold.

Am I the only one who read this comment and immediately concluded that this can only possibly be sarcasm and/or trollbait?

Because if it isn't sarcasm, then I cannot fathom the thought process which could have allowed any person to honestly believe that this position was rational and correct.

I hate Samsung. I hate their litigating against Apple. I hate their rip offs and meh too copycat products. My thinking is quite rational. A big part of the manufacturing cost of the new iPad is going towards the display. I don't want my money going to Samsung. Apple will bring other display manufacturers into the process. When they do, I'll buy one then. I'm in no hurry.

In another word, you are butthurt because apple is being a complete douche to Samsung.

People people, Samsung is a chaebol, a huge conglomerate of gazillion different parts. It's all controlled by a single family in a shady manner but that still doesn't mean Samsung the part supplier should be equated with Samsung the phone maker. They are different sections who mind their own profit.

For those who are interested, the most "core" part of Samsung is this:

http://www.everland.com/MultiLanguage/english/index.html

You probably wonder what the heck does a theme park have to do with this but Everland is the de facto holding company of the whole Samsung empire which allows the Lee family to control the whole conglomerate without paying the requisite tax or even holding that much stocks. Not that Lee wasn't found guilty. Despite bribing off a large number of law makers, prosecutors and judges, Lee was still found guilty of a massive tax evasion.

I have a samsung TV for my HTS, but I have Harman Kardon speakers, and a delicious Pioneer Receiver. You can usually get the best out of your HTS when you mix/match for a good bit less. It's a headache to figure out what works with what, but once you get it all working, you're set :)

That's also known as Friends with Benefits, isn't it? Neither one should care of what the other one may do outside their relationship, as no matter what, they may get back together again later.

I just cancelled my order for new iPad. I refuse to support the Samsung legal warchest by purchasing products with their components inside. I'll wait until Apple uses a different display maker later this summer in the new iPad.

Pretty much this. apple needs Samsung more than Samsung needs apple.

Not necessarily. Apple can still get their chips in someways albeit at a reduced quality and/or quantity. They might not get Retina in time, but eventually LG and Sharp will supply them, and probably CMI in the future at some point. If you want a more "essential" supplier, Qualcomm could be argued to be in a better position than Samsung.

On the other hand, without Apple there simply is no demand for Samsung for the massive amount of components. Without iOS, there would've been no 40 million+/year tablet market.

If Apple was that easily replaceable as a client, Samsung would've done that a long time ago. Don't forget that Samsung gave a higher priority to Apple over their own mobility department for the production of chips, which should tell you how important Apple is to Samsung.

apple ditched Sharp over Samsung. Keep yourself updated.

All you've said is "what if scenario". Right now, apple needs Samsung and Samsung is the big winner here.

I agree that Samsung makes the best displays for the money, and Pioneer the best receivers.

Agree to a point. The point being - excellence in manufacturing is still excellence and can/often is innovative.

Ford might not have had the best car - but Henry Ford sure made the assembly of automobiles innovative.

It is sad and depressing how many people are butthurt because Apple needs Samsung for their screens. Apple could care less about doing business again with Samsung. However, most of the religious zealots are offended by it. I don't know if I should cry or just laugh.

Apple didn't "ditch" Sharp over anyone. Sharp simply couldn't supply enough "good" displays in time. If they sort out their production, there'll be Sharp displays in time eventually. Samsung was also a late addition to the first iPad display. Originally it was all LG but later Samsung boosted their PLS display production to be a supplier.

This is one reason why Apple doesn't mention suppliers by their name in marketing. Their demand is so big that they can't rely on a single company. They'll source the parts from as many suppliers as needed.

Because many don't understand that business is business. End of story. It's not an emotional decision.

You'll likely be waiting forever. There are only a few display manufacturers in the world, despite how many TV/PC/etc. manufacturers there are. Samsung is one of them, if not the best.

You don't work for apple or sharp nor you are a professional economist. Stop trying to act like one.

Samsung was also a late addition to the first iPad display. Originally it was all LG but later Samsung boosted their PLS display production to be a supplier.
Irrelevant. Samsung has an exclusive deal with apple to supply their screens.

At this particular point in time, it is impossible to purchase an iDevice without some of the money going to Samsung. That is a fact which is highly unlikely to change in the foreseeable future. And even when it does, it will probably be a multi-source arrangement, with several different manufacturers supplementing Samsung in the supply chain, not replacing Samsung. You'll have no control over whether or not your particular iDevice has any Samsung-sourced parts inside it.

So, your line of reasoning leads you to the conclusion that, in order to show your solidarity to the brand of which you approve and your contempt to the brand of which you disapprove, you have decided to...
...
...
NOT BUY the brand of which you approve.

Congratulations.

Wake up: The world is full of shades of grey.

Nope Samsung doesn't have an exclusive deal. What makes you so confident on that when even the article mentions LG can supply the panels as soon as next month? ;)
