Samsung drives & Bare Feats drive

Here is a screen print of my stock MacPro (january 2008) that has not been upgraded in any way. This is out of the box. I just downloaded XBench

Last Minute Change - Western Digital's Caviar SE16 640GB hard drive

Wow - after reading this review:

http://techreport.com/articles.x/14380

on the new Western Digital's Caviar SE16 640GB hard drive I decided against the Samsung drive. The reason is because this is a two platter model versus a three. It actually rated higher than the Spinpoint in just about every catagory and it was quieter. The 500, 750 Spinpoints retain the 334 platters so there is quite a bit of wasted platter space, the WD has just two and should hold up longer. WD says the amount of cache makes little difference. They were out of stock yesterday at NewEgg and several vendors are actually selling them OVER retail, including CDW for $165 when they retail for $140. I bought two of them this morning from NewEgg for $129 each - 640 gigs is plenty of space for me and I love the all around solid stats presented in this drive review.

I just ordered the 1GB 'green power' WD from them. Word is, they also run very very cool and quiet. They're supposedly a little bit slower (some are 5400rpm, others 7200rpm), but use the same platter tech, etc. It'll be perfect for TM.

Unfortunately, CDW always sells over retail :(. Though few other stores actually give you your own account manager, and their customer service, and return policies are excellent. I'm in Chicago, so everything I order from them arrives the next day. Love it.

btw, do any F1 users hear an unusual 'spin-up' noise from their Samsung F1?

To me it almost sound like a fast RC car taking off.
