Does that mean that we're gonna be left with LG panels...? OH.. MY.. GOD

Don't panic they are being supplied by more than just LG. Sharp panels are super high quality and I suspect they will take over production of the higher end stuff. They have been ramping up production capability all this year to cope with demand as Apple have reduced their reliance on Samsung. I suspect the production problems that caused persistence on the LG panels will be sorted out.

Presumably Apple has been using a lot of Samsung components over the years because they have been reliable and good quality. If they do split I hope their new suppliers are of the same standards. I think Sharp is an innovative company but I'm not convinced by LG quality.

I still believe that Apple should be buying up their key component suppliers like Sharp and investing heavily in R&D. What happens if Samsung comes up with a revolutionary new display technology that the others can't match and all of a sudden their Samsung Tablets have an edge over the iPad. I can hear the screams of it will never happen but it's happened plenty of times to plenty of companies in the past.

Get over it. Apple is the Ferrari of consumer electronics.

Do you really think that Ferrari owners use Huawei phones? That they buy their tablet computers from behind the counter at Walgreens?

at best, Apple is a BMW or a Merc

This is bad news for Apple. They lost a reliable global supplier.

On the other hand, this isn't really a good choice for Samsung. You can't expect Apple to ever go back to Samsung to be their client. I wouldn't be surprised if the Apple A6 processors will start being made by TSMC or maybe use the expertise that Intel has.

FYI Super PLS has a lower subpixel rate than P-IPS thus a lower true colour gamut so not the "best" screen for photography.

"Best" is very hard to define with LCD technology unless you specify it's intended use.

Agreed, the image is an advert so will obviously be screwed to show the Super Pls at its best. There is no free ride with this, what you gain in contrast and brightness you loose in colour gamut and tonal graduation as the underlying tech is broadly similar. Of course in going with sharp apple now has access to IGZO which is far superior to current panel technologies. Can't wait to see this built info apple devices.

It's how the world works. Sharing responsibilities and expertise is good business and provides a stable product that advances the market quickly. It's impossible for Apple to become experts in all areas. Apple have been a great company that takes other companies tech and combines them into a new product.

Apple know how to polish technology and stick a logo on it. They are not innovators of core tech. They do not have this expertise.

Neither does Samsung. They are innovators in supply chain and manufacturing - most of the work done on these "core tech" products happens at firms closer to Apple, in the US.

I have a LG screened rMBP so I've already lost.

But what the forum hasn't focused on is that the glorious rMBP Sammy screen is not only gone from Apple, but it will soon be showing up in lenovo, microsoft and sammy products. This is bad news for Apple fans.

I think Apple's been leveraging Samsung because they posted some huge orders many years ago for flash memory and have just kept it simple with one supplier. Other manufacturers are capable of the same quality components, possibly even better quality.

Microsoft products will be using that screen? What Microsoft product is that? If the competition wanted a screen like that they could have had it, obviously Samsung isn't the only one that can make them.

I wonder who initiated this - Apple or Samsung.

If Samsung, it's definitely a risky move to refuse to serve your biggest customer. It obviously leaves Apple with an enormous components problem - we've heard constant reports that LG and Sharp cant meet Apples quality expectations. Quality doesn't just appear from nowhere, though - the huge orders are building up Samsungs already-enormous experience in manufacturing LCDs, while rivals remain behind.

Apple should be investing directly in to companies like Sharp. It will allow them to buy the best tooling and hire the best people, and if managed correctly can bring their quality up to Samsungs level. The direct investment gives Apple the ability to sway higher-level management and ensure this this happens, as well as prevent them doing anything similar in the future. Not only that, it makes great financial sense, too - with some Apple-sized orders and the aforementioned better quality, these companies should thrive and give an ample return should Apple ever decide to divest. Its basically betting on yourself, so that increases the risk, but Apple would probably be fine with that; they expect to do well and don't need additional motivation.

No. They own Apple products.

And when customers buy them by the tens of millions, it will prove them correct. Sheesh!

Actually that would be Acer, no?

Or is it Vertu?

But it aint Apple.

Don't worry guys. LG will be in the courtroom next accused of copying Apple. LG is actually making a comeback with their latest quad core beast and IPS display. Apple is going to throw a hissy fit if LG becomes successful as a Android device maker.

"Samsung to Cease Providing LCD Panels to Apple in 2013"

A better headline would be, "Apple to Cease Ordering LCD Panels from Samsung in 2013". Let's remember who is the one being hurt here. Apple is the one that moved all of their display orders to LG, Japan Display and Sharp.

If Apple avoids using Samsung merely because of the IP cold war between the two companies, then it certainly hurts Apple. Having fewer component manufacturers to negotiate with reduces Apple's bargaining power, may increase component supply costs, and could limit Apple's access to the best available components. I, for one, hope that this is not true.

I am sure the reliance on Samsung has been discussed for years at Apple. And anything that someone can come up with in the forum hasn't already been analyzed twice over by Apple.

You all do know that LG has made the cinema display panels for years right? LG kept the IPS tech alive until others started back up on the bandwagon a few years ago. LG also makes panels for NEC's top of the line, Dell's top of the line, and Eizo. This whole LG's sucks because of some little 15" laptop display is ridiculous. I am not discounting the current issue with rMBP's but LG is a very high quality panel manufacturer. Samsung laptop panels are a bit better than LG but LG's desktop display's can only be competed with by Samsung's very best, if even then. Samsung has better contrast ratio's, LG has more accurate color.

In any number of threads you make two fallacious "generic" arguments:

1. That Samsung isn't innovative and therefor their patents and technology are meaningless
2. That Samsung's technologies are generic and generally available

Both are utterly incorrect. Samsung is one of the worlds most prolific patentors and heavily cross-licenses with nearly all major semi-cos. Second, there are nearly no companies that can deliver the level of quality in Samsung's products. In the case of display technology, Apple has soaked up the supply because they commit to large scale purchase agreements.

Without Apple, Samsung will be in the position of having invested capacity but no customer. That is why we will see these displays in other products.
