Settle down folks. I know the COVID panic porn has people stressed, but come on, it's just a rumor, incomplete in any event. Apple is very likely to pick the best of all worlds: Those who want a charger or headphones can receive one for free and/or as a credit to buying Airbuds, 18W charger, etc. You heard it here first folks.

That still saves a likely about a half BILLION chargers, and half BILLION headphones, from being wasted just over a couple of years. Great for the environment, good for Apple's bottom, and great for the small number of people who want another set of wired ear buds or charger.

Now that your blood pressure is lower, no need to thank me.

I must be honest I expected Samsung to mock apple then do the same a few years later ala headphone jack.

The fact they want to do it asap as well says something.
That was my first thought as well, but mine was more because Samsung has been including really nice/fast chargers for years now (at least since the Note 5) so I assumed Samsung would jump at the chance to shave some costs there.

Having said that, it makes Apple's choice more puzzling. They've (seemingly) been including the same charger with their iPhones since the beginning, and weren't there rumors of Apple including faster chargers for this generation?

At least with samsung they have been supplying a fast charger over USB-C for years so people will literally have extras laying around. Apple deciding to change from USB-A to USB-C to lightning is going to be more of a pain for iPhone users who bought an iPhone that isn’t the 11 pro and only have the old USB-A 5w block.

Seems like this is a precursor to eliminating the chargi port on the iPhone.

The burning question how is Apple Carplay going to function if that happens? That would suck.
They’ll probably make a dongle you attach in your car. It’ll also make all existing wired CarPlay implementations wireless.

Apple production guy: 5g modem is expensive and will cut into our profit margin. What should we do?

Tim cook: Remove charger, earpods and reduce the box size. Tell the customers that it’s better for the environment.

To save production cost or increase their profits? I think it is obvious. I know I used the power adapter and never bought one from a third party vendor. Does than mean that other electronics will stop including power cords and you now have to buy that too? We can send a message to Apple and Samsung by holding off buying a new phone for a year.
If you are only buying an iPhone for the included chargers, and you’re gonna boycott them this year just because of what’s in the box, then clearly you didn’t want one that bad anyway

What's next...MacBooks without power adapters? Ridiculous. Yes, many of us already have power adapters, but to sell products without a critical component such as a charger being included is absurd.

Oh, you wanted SEATS and a STEERING WHEEL in your new car? You'll have to purchase those separately! Don't you have seats from your last car you can use? WTF.
Check out what BMW is doing. The hardware for heated seats is included in their new car, but you have to pay a subscription to use it

Apple CEO: I’m gay
Samsung CEO two weeks later: I’m also gay, and waterproof

As usual Apple is making the uncomfortable decisions (anyone remembers dropping the optical drive from Macs and headphone jack from phones?) just to be closely followed by competition

Multiple sites have reported Apple planning to stop selling a charger with the upcoming phones, as well as a price increase despite less in the box. Sure it’s a rumor at this stage, but highly likely. Thanks for playing.
current iPhone 11 price: $699
Rumored iPhone 12 price: $649
Rumored iPhone 12 max price: $749
Current iPhone 11 Pro price: $999
Rumored iPhone 12 pro price: $999

And that’s for double the storage at 128 GB, compared to the current 64 GB. Also with 5G, the new design, and OLED across-the-board. You’re getting more features for the same price. Not sure who told you the prices were going up, but clearly they can’t read

You realize it’s possible to care about profits and the environment at the same time? I mean, Apple is a business, their main goal is to make and maximize profits. And if they can do that while helping save the environment, then it’s both a win win for them and the environment. Nothing wrong with that. Of course, a small amount of customers will suffer, but the majority won’t. And because more phones can ship on airplanes to the smaller packaging, people will be getting their phones even faster

I don't mind this. I just wish they dumped lightning and went to USB-C. Apple's lightning cables deteriorate and wear quickly, and even high-quality cables I've bought you could probably tow a vehicle with still suffer from corrosion.

I don't even travel with my cables often - I don't travel much, so I have cables at home and work that are mostly stationary - living room/desk/bedroom, and they stay where they are. They still go bad relatively quickly.

So I'm perfectly fine with re-using my cables (it will also make your trade-in less 'shady'-looking when you don't have the cable/charger), I just wish the cables were of higher quality.

Thank God. It’s about time they stopped this. Not only is a good for their profits, but it’s also good for the planet. I must have 100 charging blocks laying around. Now, if they would just ditch Lightning in favor of USB-C (or Thunderbolt) as they have done with the MacBook and iPad, that would be amazing. To be able to charge all of my devices with one type of cable would make traveling so much easier.
This is what gives me pause about the rumor. Apple has been a dongle-generating behemoth the last few years. If they’re really going to hang their hats on “this is good for the environment” then they need to make their product line consistent. We all know it’s a huge money-maker; it’s also a huge contributor to e-waste.

I seriously doubt it.

Apple is a company that prides itself on knowing the customer better than they know themselves, and they specialise in making decisions on behalf of the user so they don’t have to.

What I see Apple doing is varying this decision by geography. For example, if they are aware that a particular region or country represents an area of growth and that many potential customers are new to smartphones, they may choose to still bundle a charging brick for that particular area only.

Conversely, for a country like the US where the smartphone market is already so saturated and the majority of customers have already owned a smartphone (especially an iphone) for many years, Apple can probably safely drop the brick altogether, because this move is likely going to impact only a very small group of users.

The benefits to this far outweigh the downsides. AirPods adoption is rising, there are alternatives to charging your iphone (ie: wireless charging), and I believe the majority of iphone users (90%) won’t be negatively impacted by this move at all. In the meanwhile, you can seek some consolation in the knowledge that you are helping the environment in some small way.

To Apple I say - go for it.

Hi
It’s disingenuous to put forward cost savings as the swing vote here. The EU is putting laws in place about E-waste. And yes, shipping millions of cables and wired EarPods are basically e-waste waiting to happen. So a small cost savings, very small I’d guess, is probably not the motivating factor here.
[automerge]1594228688[/automerge]

iPod touch doesn’t ship with a charger or a voucher...
it’s frustrating how they would cut the adapter in the name of reducing e waste per EU rule, but ignore the soon to pass eu regulation requiring devices to use USB-C.

I had said this more than once, if Apple do the trends, others will starts to follow, so yeah it won’t surprising me anymore.

Yep, that's exactly what I meant. There's a rumor about Apple dropping their charger, there's a thread about that rumor, and there's plenty of comments complaining about Apple's rumored decision. Now there's a thread about Samsung dropping their charger, there's this thread about that rumor, and you're addressing a comment directly to Apple, complaining about Apple's rumored decision.

I just picked your comment to quote because it was the one I was looking at at the time-- you're not the only one. Just like MR now has a choice of reactions, they could have an auto-whinge button where you could select from Price, Quality, Keyboard, Dongles, China, or Tim Cook's Politics. Doesn't matter the topic, we'd just need the same choices.

just great ....,..Follow Apple. but this is following them in the wrong direction. :p

I would have thought companies can make their own decisions, but i guess not. I guess the time has come when smart phones are becoming so expensive, its hitting in on something else.. Something we all take for 'granted'

You know it’s a website about RUMORS, so it’s okay to get pissy about rumors...

Also, Apple just sent out a questionnaire about customer use of chargers, giving further credence to the, um, rumor. When we voice our opinions on a very high profile, public forum like macrumors, the hope is that maybe, just maybe, Apple will take notice.

I do, however, appreciate the amount of energy you expend trying to change the minds of anonymous people on a website about rumors...that’s dedication at its finest.

The answer to this changes though when OTHER sites report the same..
