These tech companies that have seemingly unlimited amount of resources are doing exactly what VZW and others did.. eventually take all these features or incentives away
1) cuz they can
2) to increase profit
3) cuz we have very few options (see #1)

It is pretty disheartening. Makes it hard, for me, to stay truly loyal like I used to be when I was more active in the technology field.

Now Apple needs to up their game in iPhone wireless charging capabilities.

edit: corrected spelling
Especially if they plan to go portless. No way I am getting one with 7.5W max still. Also need more range and public accessibility and a reasonably priced reliable dongle for CarPlay.

To save production cost or increase their profits? I think it is obvious. I know I used the power adapter and never bought one from a third party vendor. Does than mean that other electronics will stop including power cords and you now have to buy that too? We can send a message to Apple and Samsung by holding off buying a new phone for a year.
Yea imagine getting a shiny new big screen 8K TV and there is no power cord, and now you have to figure our which are even compatible.

...
Exactly. And no matter how many have a megacache of cords and adaptors, there are always going to be noobs entering the ecosystem. And a lot could be clueless to all this news of no way to charge their devices out of the boxes.
As a fact of the matter, no one knows how Apple will handle this situation. I doubt the management is sitting there, with their thumbs up their you know what, reading MR posts and saying: "golly, we didn't think of that".

You know you still paid for that charger, right? They don't just include things in the box for free, it's built into the total cost.
And this is why some people's point is if they charge the same without, they are keeping the profit instead of passing savings to consumers.

I'd agree with this move if the industry wasn't in the middle of converting everyone over to USB-C. I just feel like it's a few years too early. We just got our first iPhone with USB-C power adapter included last year!
This is why if they go cable only, it needs to be A. I'm sure most have an A port in some form, but not so much C.

I disagree. One is paying more for the rumored new tech in the box. Old tech drops in price, new tech costs more.

Oligopoly. Samsung saves money while benefiting from the Apple's virtue signaling about how having no charger in the box will save the environment.

Just a point of clarification. "Virtue signalling" is about looking good, not doing good. Saving tons of e-waste seems to be doing good (as well as looking good).

Most people still don’t have a USBC adapter because apple included USAA bricks for years longer than they were supposed to.

this is gonna be annoying for a lot of users.

Apple sold 66 million iPhones in 2019. Not sure how much the charger and headphones cost, but lets say together it's an extra $5. That's $330,000,000 dollars. That's not a small chunk of change. That's like three F-35s and a jackpot winning, leftover.

Having said that, I am very happy that they'll be producing thousands of tons less e-waste.

LOL. You’re off by about 200 million iPhone sales each year.

I think this move is being overblown. I've been using a 12W Apple charger that probably shipped with the first iPhone and have left every other charger, cable, and set of headphones in the box for when I sell it.

Chargers are pretty much only useful when traveling nowadays anyway. My kitchen and bedroom have USB outlets, my desk has a wireless charger, and my car has both.

Rather than spend $50 on Apple's 30W charger, you can spend $20 on Ravpower's 45W USB-C charger. Wish it charged my 15" MBP, but it charges everything else crazy fast if I ever need it.

I’m sorry if I’m spending $1K on a phone it should work out of the box. We all know they’re not going to reduce the price of the phone so they should offer a credit for people who need one. Don’t put it in the box but offer a credit for people to order one or pick one up in store. And a fast charger. My guess is the chargers most people have sitting in draws is the 5W one.

I agree with you. Most of the ones I have are 5W but I have a few iPad chargers from over the years and the fast charger that came with the iPhone 11 Pro. I’d take another fast charger. They should include that in the box for $1k. Most people don’t have those.

Seems like this is a precursor to eliminating the chargi port on the iPhone.

The burning question how is Apple Carplay going to function if that happens? That would suck.

That assumes that the cost of making the 12 is exactly the same as that of the 11 though.

Seriously, this is good news for our environment. Please stop complaining. This is how all electronics should be sold, you buy what you need.

What you can complain about, if it happens, is if this will be marketed as above but price drop doesn’t match actual cost.

This has been done purely for profit and spun to look like they are doing something good. If they really cared about the environment do you think they would sell “disposable” AirPods which can’t have their batteries replaced?

Anybody else feel that people have stopped even reading the articles before going into the comments to launch some generic tirade against Apple?
Multiple sites have reported Apple planning to stop selling a charger with the upcoming phones, as well as a price increase despite less in the box. Sure it’s a rumor at this stage, but highly likely. Thanks for playing.

What's next...MacBooks without power adapters? Ridiculous. Yes, many of us already have power adapters, but to sell products without a critical component such as a charger being included is absurd.

Oh, you wanted SEATS and a STEERING WHEEL in your new car? You'll have to purchase those separately! Don't you have seats from your last car you can use? WTF.
Try purchasing a Porsche GT3 for example. It doesn’t come with a rear windscreen wiper, you have to pay extra for that.

What I hate about this, the Apple Watch and AirPods don’t come with a block, so now I used old blocks to charge them with.
