so when I play 480p video on my 1080p tv, it looks like crap.
what's 1080p video going to look like on either of these Retina Displays? wouldn't it look horrible on a 2560x1600 screen?

Please stop referring to high resolution displays as "retina" (even with quotes) that AREN'T Retina. Apple has Trademarked Retina (issued 09/06/11 s/n 85056810), using it to refer to other companies' products is misleading. Surely you can come up with a descriptive technological description for a high resolution display without applying Apple's Trademark to non-Apple devices (?)

A Microsoft MP3 player ISN'T an iPod, and a Samsung hi-res display ISN'T Retina.

...until its in an Apple device.

Probably, which means they'll fall back on double-scaling 720p for media. Which, in itself, isn't all that bad, all things considered. In fact, i'd prefer true 720 to artifact encumbered 1080p any day of the weak, and given a) limited storage b) limited bandwidth, true 1080 isn't really feasible just yet for the mass market.

p.s.

For clarity:

2560x1600 is 16:10.
2560x1440 (2x720p) is 16:9.

this is really a fight for customers who don't already own an iPad or galaxy. i have an iPad and unless samsung does something light-years beyond what an apple product has i'm not switching. i have far too much money in iOS apps that i freakin' love!! i'd bet i have $1000 in apps over the years. some of which android doesn't have an equal. especially on the tablet specific front.

a question- is the new samsung of a higher resolution, or is it the screen size that ups the overall numbers?? also i don't think i'd want a bezel to be any smaller. i occasionally touch the side of the screen on my ipad2. if the board is smaller that could be a problem.

also, i REALLY hope iPad 3 give us more storage at the top end! 64gb is not enough anymore. i'm pretty sure i can fill 100gb with just apps.

if apple wants to give us a new innovation how about allowing multiple set-ups in iTunes. i could have a work set up which would load the apps, documents and whatever else i needed for work. or a entertainment setup that would have more games and music. multiple set ups for a device would be great! i wonder if the app data can be saved too. would i have to start a game over or would the data be saved in iTunes??

...until Apple does it. Then it'll be revolutionary, magical and wonderful.

Actually, yes.

While you meant it sarcastically, you just articulated the reason for Apple's success. While many don't appreciate the fit of an Armani suit, the supple leather of a Louis Vuitton briefcase, or the handling of a BMW, there are others who do. When Steve jobs said that Apple is at the intersection of Liberal Arts and Technolgy, he deftly articulated that seemingly intangible quality that permeates Apple's products. I like owning and using products that are a joy to behold, to touch, and to use. It's about more that the technical specs, it's about being "magical".

The problem with many on this forum is you are tech people, and tech people ONLY. That's fine. But realize that others of us are tech AND liberal arts types who value the entire EXPERIENCE. I don't care that someone else had multi-tasking first, that someone else had high-res phone displays first, or that another phone has more RAM, those specs aren't interesting to me in the least. I am looking for the whole package - from the interface to the sublime feel of the brushed aluminum and glass. Something that makes me smile when I use it.

So, yes, when Apple introduces the next big thing that has already been done, it will be revolutionary, magical, and wonderful. And I will be pleased.

Dude.

What the hell.

I'm extremely picky about music, for example, and have 11 GB.

I have more apps than I use and they only total about 1 GB.

So a qualifier for a tire is "black" and "round". Does that mean obese black people are tires?

Just because most tablets are a certain way, challenge it! Do some innovation and come up with something great that people will love. Maybe it will be a perfect square, or two triangles you fold our to be a square. I don't know, but innovate for Christ's sakes! Stop taking the easy route and innovate!

If it ain't broke, don't fix it...

I don't understand all this angst over inanimate objects. They're just products. Sure, I'm a fan of Apple's engineering but who cares about the lawsuits, innovation (or lack of), the copying of ideas... nobody dies or gets maimed. The end user typically wins.

Some of you people have real emotions invested in this and that's just puzzling.

I would be far more concerned about defects in the video compression than deficiencies from the scaling process. Especially at that pixel size level.

You also have to keep in mind preciously few video files are designed for pixel perfected data in the first place, and in constant motion it just gets harder to spot.

Its only really cartoons and Anime where pixel deficiencies might get somewhat noticeable.

In what way is creating a new screen capable of high resolutions copying Apple? And it's only a rumour so far that Apple is actually going to use a "Retina display" on their next iPad, so again, in what way are they copying Apple?
You really must be blind that with Samsung decisions are not maked based on what Apple is doing or planning... . Hell judging on the comments on sites that don't have a particularly pro apple public, they see it as an reaction to the fact that the iPad 3 may come out with a high resolution display. So the "it is only innovative when Apple does it" line is fine and dandy, but Samsung can't even fool the general public.

Hell even the Galaxy related advertisments that they show on television here in Belgium are clearly targeted to an Apple public or are making stabs to the iPad. Thinner, flash, usb, faster processor against "the leading tablet". All stuff that really don't shift a lot of galaxy tablets (consumers don't care for technicalities) but it is clearly visible they are targeting Apple.

Samsung is so obsessed with Apple that it isn't funny any more. I have really more respect for companies like Sony or Asus that are trying something different and are really innovative with their android devices instead of making clones. We are talking about a company which CEO on the same frikking day that a competitor came out with a thinner device, demanded a redesign of a tablet that was only on the market for a couple of months. And what was the redesign element, thinner. You know the story behind the 10.1v ?

For **** sake look at KIES. Look at the use of non standard symbols (a sunflower for pictures isn't universal like the telephone for example...) for certain actions and please tell me with a straight face that Samsung doesn't copy.

And FYI I have worked for a company (with clients like nokia, rolls royce, phillips, sony ,...) specialized in innovations (using TRIZ principles for example) and Samsung is really not a company that in the tablet space is really innovative. They don't even tried to hide it where they take their inspiration from.

The way Asus is looking in transforming the tablet with a dock or the dual screen of Sony is something different, is innovation and is clearly based on their own ideas and focus.

Yap, because presenting a 10.1" display with 2560x1600 px was because there were reaction to the iPad 3 rumors.

Do you think Samsung is so awesome to develop a display like in less than 2 months since the presentation of the iPad 2?

i miss the days when not everything turned into a debate about who copied who

I miss the days when this site wasn't clogged with samsung rumors. It doesn't matter that they indirectly relate to Apple products and it doesn't matter that samsung may be attempting to compete with Apple. If by some fluke of probability this rumored samsung tablet does better than its predecessors it still won't matter in the context of Apple products.

Certainly, Apple may have to modify its strategies at some point to maintain a competitive edge, and when rumors of THAT happen they'll be relevant. However, all of this pandering to samsung fanboys and droid fanboys is completely inappropriate for MacRumors. So much of it is so obviously meant as a deplorable attempt to increase page views.

There will obviously be high resolution iOS and Android tablets, that shouldn't be surprising. The difference will be how does the software handle it? iOS developers will have two include two versions of their graphics for one aspect ratio, but how many will Android developers have to include, considering the many screen sizes and aspect ratios that will be available? There's going to be a lot more planning and testing required to develop for Android devices, or the apps that don't adjust for every configuration will look bad and work poorly.

And nobody cared.

LOL. 2560x1600 vs. 2048x1536.

There you go again, Samsung. Still bringing specs to an experience war.

It will be funny to hear the Fragdroid apologists comment on how much better the Samsung screen looks. As if any human could actually see the difference.

That argument doesn't make any sense.

There are a lot of things developed for months or years ahead that could be incorporated into a tablet. You are aware there is a market for LCD displays outside the tablet world ? Even for non standard size screens ? I'm even convinced that the technology for the iPad4 for example is already being in R&D or developed today without those tech even specially designed for a tablet... .

So no I don't think they developed such a screen in 2 months they have the technology for a while now, but yes I'm very convinced that the reason that we may see such a tablet arise is a possible reaction on the iPad 3 with a higher resolution screen.

Especially in a market where their competitors are for 99,9% focussing on 1080p resolutions... . Especially seeing that *all* their marketing is focussed on better specifications against Apple products... . When they frikking advertise the same mantra of beter specs against Apple product X again and again, what should I think ? That is their whole sales argument why consumer should pick their products FFS.

One word: Fragmentation

[...] iOS developers will have two include two versions of their graphics for one aspect ratio, but how many will Android developers have to include, considering the many screen sizes and aspect ratios that will be available? [...]

iOS automatically picks the correct-resolution image for the device. Simple. More Photoshop or Pixelmator work, but some things can't be helped.

Android, on the other hand, comes in all different screen geometries and aspect ratios. An absolute nightmare. Except in the pad space. There's only one Android pad to develop for now: Kindle Fire. And Amazon can blissfully ignore Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Fruitcake (or whatever they're calling the now-irrelevant 5.0.)

So there is only one Android screen size in the pad space, and only one version of the OS to develop for. Amazon's proprietary, closed fork of Android 2.3 doesn't ever need to change. Kindle Fire has stripped Android down to little more than its kernel and its display API. Only Amazon's "profit layer" needs to evolve.

Ironic that it took Amazon to solve the Android fragmentation problem in the pad space. And Google hates them for it.

Go die Samsung, if you can't make your own products to contribute to the electronic community then your company has no purpose. Microsoft and all the others copy too but at least they make they're own things as well.

Thanks for explaining how resolution independence works on Android

Well, if you're convinced of that new products from other companies exist only because they will be better than an hypothetical Apple product I can't do nothing, is yours believe
