1) Ill give you the MR response: You'll watch the tablet from further away, hence it will be retina.
2) You don't know if its pentile. Pure speculation on your behalf.

p.s. unless Bryan Jones added "at distance x" he's a moron. since I'm sure he did, someone else will have to take over the hat.

As someone else already said, the retina dpi was calculated at 12" away from the eyes. Seems a reasonable working distance for a tablet, don't use mine much farther away than that.

So this rumoured Samsung at only 260 dpi is not true retina, call it some meaningless name like HD if you want.

As for it being Pentile it's certainly not my speculation, the article itself mentioned this possibility.

ps: btw MR response? Do you consider yourself to represent the whole MR now?

Copying isn't competition.

It's resolution is higher, so they aren't copying. Or are you suggesting that any high DPI display is automatically classified as an Apple copycat? Because that would be pretty retarded.

That said, considering Samsung actually manufactures their own panels, I don't think it would be too difficult for them to one-up Apple here.

You're right. Its the lawsuits from a sour competitor

The ban was not worldwide. Nor was there a ban in the US.

The reality is that no one really wants Samsung's tablets, unfortunately. The display is the least of their problems.

And this is part of a bigger problem: Google is wholly unable to translate smartphone share into tablet share.

I just hope Apple does it right. Please no compromises, just to be a few weeks earlier.

The current screen size and ratio are just what I need.

Never feel Apple doesn't change their plans because of what other companies are supposedly going to do.

That said, the real joke here is that Samsung is trying to beat a rumor. And even if they pull it off and they are first to market with a super Retina Display they could end up having almost no sales either because the tablet overall sucks or because folks will wait weeks, even months, to see what the new iPad looks like before they commit. And in the end, Samsung could be beat out by a new iPad showing up in the summer without a retina display at all. Ouch.

----------

Apple haven't even "created" a higher resolution screen yet. It is so far only rumours.

They haven't released one on the tablet but that doesn't mean that they haven't created one just like they did for the iPhone.

At least someone is trying to compete with Apple.

In what way is creating a new screen capable of high resolutions copying Apple? And it's only a rumour so far that Apple is actually going to use a "Retina display" on their next iPad, so again, in what way are they copying Apple?

To both these points, Samsung has insider information on what Apple is doing with their product line before most people ever do being a huge supplier to Apple for all sorts of parts, including... displays!!

It's a sticky issue... would Samsung have done this is they hadn't already been working on it for Apple? Who knows?!?

While I wouldn't peg them as copy cats for a display, it's easy to see how they have been able to copy Apple so quickly, and why Apple is so pissed about it. A competitor is one thing, but a business partner is a totally different thing. Samsung's behavior, imo, isn't much different than what Microsoft did to Apple in the 80's... yet, if Apple fails to learn this lesson, it is almost shame on them. Same can be said of Google copying IOS with Android in a rush it out the door scheme that pissed off Steve Jobs so bad. Steve told Schmidt all about the iPhone... and he was on Apple's board.

For a company that works so hard to protect their secrets, Apple really fumbles the ball when they work with business partners. It's always their business partners who actually stick a knife to them.

At the same time, does anyone actually care about Android tablets really anyway? Sales say no.

If Samsung should copy anyone, it's Asus. That new Transformer Prime tablet is sweet, and if I were going Android on a tablet, that's where I'd be spending my money. Makes me hope Apple goes that route with the iPad... a laptop like dock with extra batter and storage baked into it... that's sweet, and at a 10" or 11" screen, I think it's a far better feature than a higher definition display at such a small size where it's not really all that useful to but a handful of people anyway.

I like the idea of an 11.6" screen. I keep reading that Apple can't change the size of the screen on it's iOS devices because it would mean developers would have to keep modifying their app's. If we are genuinely going to move from a PC to a Tablet world then they need to come up with a solution to solve this issue. Why can't tablet software scale according to screen size in the same way PC app's do and dynamically put the touch controls in the right place for each screen size in the process.

They haven't released one on the tablet but that doesn't mean that they haven't created one just like they did for the iPhone.

I don't know if Apple is or is not using Samsung as a supplier for the iPad 3, but they seem to be stuck with them still due to supply constraints. So, Samsung doesn't have to "beat a rumor" as you say. They only have to look at what Apple is ordering in the way of parts to see what direction they are going.

Samsung is dead to Apple, but they have to die slowly until they can be fully replaced. All the disruption in supply chain from natural distasters makes this death slower than I'm sure Apple would like. As they are suing one another back and forth, Apple is still buying from them. No rumor needed... it's called a bill of lading.

So what. you have zero information about how long Apple was working on the iPad before they launched it. It could have been well before these drawings came out.

But the point is that people say that before the Apple was no tablet with a design like the iPad, not that the iPad has copied anything or that the iPad wasn't in works long time ago

Apple will continue to lose marketshare. They are too dumb/proud to realize that their model of business will lead to apple of the early 90s.

While you are correct that Apple's % of marketshare will drop you seem to think that it will be due to Apple losing sales numbers and not the rise the base number of units for the market.

and i suspect you will find your assumption to be wrong in the end

Spot on with your first point.

Second point. Just why? If I want a laptop, I'd by laptop. All Asus are trying to do is be too clever to fuse the laptop/tablet markets into one product. If I want to use a keyboard on my iPad, I get a docking station or use bluetooth keyboard. Funny how the Asus site tries to play the "tablets" are difficult to type on card. For one, develop a better on-screen keyboard experience (split keyboard) or just put the Android OS in a netbook shell.

Some of the comments reminds me of story I read about future phone displays, that will be in our phones in the future, including iphones, and this Apple fanboy starts ranting about how these companies are copying Apple and scared of Apple by making the screen better. So obnoxious, not even realizing that this is technology that's going to be in future iPhones too. I think the company was Samsung too. Why are some people so emotionally into Apple?

This means nothing. Why?

Because with Android's fragmentation, and already abysmal tablet App store, - they will have next to no Apps that actually take advantage of this resolution. Even more so with web browsing, videos, etc etc.

Apple, on the other hand, will have steady and constant upgrades to their interface and App store that will[/i] take advantage of their HD display.

But the point is that people say that before the Apple was no tablet with a design like the iPad,

There wasn't. THere were tablets with one or two similar features sure. But nothing with the totality of design like Apple did for the iPhone or the iPad until after they showed their designs. Then pretty much every other whatever started copying that totality.

this Samsung higher resolution tablet screen rumor is not new at all

Engadget article from MAY
http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/13/samsung-and-lg-to-showcase-large-high-pixel-density-lcd-panels/

And the Retina rumors about the iPad started pretty much the same day they announced it for the iPhone, including many rumors last year of an iPad 2 in the spring and an iPad 2 High Def in the Fall. Which are being repeated now for the iPad 3

Mmm, apps in Android adapts to the resolution automatically. And with the Fragments API they adapt to the type of device, phone or tablet

Scaling /=/ Optimization.

Scaling means nothing when the base images aren't native resolution.

No, there were tablets with the overall design.

But you can deny reality and believe what you want, it won't change.

Exactly the same that will happen with the different resolutions in the iPhone/iPad case. Like they have now

We're going to be like that are we?

It's important to note, that yes, while the shape is nothing unique, or the colour, it certainly didn't have to all be like that and most certainly didn't need to imitate the dress code Apple set for the party.

JooJoo released about a week before the ipad. Exopc slate released about 6 months after the ipad. I could site more examples but frankly I don't want to take the time. Tablets not having buttons and having rounded corners was a long time coming, just chalk this one up to convergent evolution. Stop drinking the kool-aid no one copied anyone, unless you want us to believe that these companies rushed to get a prouct out in under a year from the ipad unveiling just to copy apple. About the graphic you can cherry pick to say aything you want.

edit: Almost forgot crunchpad APPLE YOU COPIERS! :p <-- full year before ipad.

Interesting fact; the iPad is 4:3.

Yep, it was late and I was thinking TV....

But my point is still the same: 11"+ screens are needed for reading standard PDFs and standard magazines.

The iPad is too small for that, as are virtually all 10.1" Androids.

I am glad Samsung is moving to a more useful screen size and would imagine that it would be successful with business users (full-size PDFs, spreadsheets, Word documents) and those who like to read magazines on their tablets, without reflowing or scrolling.

Apple should have done it, but it didn't....

It's one of my biggest annoyance of the topic, because this form factor was one that the computer industry had been talking about for year. Heck, even Bill Gates described the current tablet in his book that came out in 1997 or 98. (And there's even a demo uploaded like in 2007 of Microsoft and a iPad form factor device) The big difference is that other companies show cased their tablet that looked exactly like the iPad eventually looked like, and the only mention I saw of them on television was 2 month later on low rated channel on a Saturday morning, but when the iPad was introduced, it literally got the same amount of attention and all day coverage as when Michael Jackson died. That intense media hype that Steve was somehow able to get is truly the most important factor as to why Apple is in its current position. Not "magical" products or whatever. How much would all day advertisement like that, even on non English speaking channel would cost, and how much product will it sell. All for free.
