You can't see they picked a businessman for the PC and a college student for the Mac? You could have exactly the same commercial for Homda civic vs Ford Trucks.

Wait, which vehicle is the student? Cause I don't see "rusty 1992 Camry" listed.

These are college students with money. Linux wasn't represented in the ads.

>ducks<

J/K Linux, you know I luvs you

I don't really care about this ad from Samsung.

But I find it quite sad that a company that was founded in 1938 and has been selling electronics globally since the 1960's is not already a household name. Surely everyone has heard of Samsung by now...

Samsung wasn't a big household appliances/electronics company before though. It's only really been in the past decade that they've entered into a wide variety of markets: computers, appliances, phones, etc.

Even here in the USA, there are people still surprised to see Samsung making refrigerators and dish washers. I remember when they came out with microwaves (their first foray into that sector).

Samsung also wasn't known for quality devices. When they first stated making digital cameras, they were dirt cheap compared to everyone else... but cheap being the operative word all around.

I believe you guys were discussing several of Samsung's ads all at once. This ad referenced in this story does not attack users, but the one making fun of people who stand in line for phones does. (which those people probably deserve)

Mac vs PC ads were about hardware. It was a metaphor, you seriously don't see that? Maybe you should watch them again, esp the ones that DID have users in them. The users were always treated well by the ads.

After the backlash of having users fall of cliffs, lemming style, i guess they felt it was time to play it safe. And yes, its a metaphor, but if you don't think its about symbolic value and building user identity, then... well, i just leave it at that.

Shows how clueless Apple can be sometimes. The HP logo is there because? WebOS is nothing at all like iOS.

Well, they had a rectangular tablet with rounded corners. So... yeah.

I agree with the referencing. It just makes their marketing effort seem desperate at this point.

Hi .. I am a Mac

Hi .. I am a PC and I have huge Virus problems ..

Some people have strong opinions with an unfortunate combination with a very selective memory.

Just to get it out there... Apple's infamous lemmings commercial. Comparatively, Samsung's blows are harmless.

p.s. is there a way to make the video embedded, or did i dream about seeing that future the other day?

Wow, admittedly never saw that. I'm excited to see how everyone will explain that one away as not a big deal, but making fun of a creative barista is pure evil.

In the end, it makes no difference what Samesung does. They only sold, and by sold I mean shipped, 1 million tabs worldwide last quarter. They were second place to Apple's 11.1+ million sold, and by sold, I mean sold.

This quarter they are slotted to place 4th behind Apple, Amazon and Asus.

Does anyone really care what Samesung says? Numbers would seem to indicate 'nope'!

Im sure LTD has some form of response, he usually do.

p.s. the barista-blow is probably the funniest blow ever (read: that week... but brilliant nonetheless).

except that Apple's lawsuits against them indicate someone does care

Did Samsung release those numbers, or is that Anal cyst speculation? Also, if true, whats to say about Mac? Their relative market share is, after all, less. Its funny how numbers like that only matter when they benefit Apple.

It's also funny how you have zero point zero clue when it comes to Apple and market share. Nokia has a larger market share but their value is no where near Apple's. In fact, Apple could by Nokia with the spare change in Tim Cooks pocket. So much for market share. Apple is a profit (oh no, not the p-word) driven company. They have high margins on their products that in turn gives their share holders higher value. They do all of this with far few products than Samsung, Nokia, HTC, etc.. combined.

Don't know why Apple is worrying about Samsung rubbish when they actually have real competitors emerging, Amazon with Kindle Fire and eventually Windows 8 tablets(which will be my first tablet).

For starters, I have not said a "straight copy". Using a different camera and relocating speakers that are hidden from the front view anyway, does not make a "unique" design. That is like creative plagiarism, where people change the copied work of others by moving sentences around and changing some of the words. But it is still stealing another's ideas, even when an weak attempt is made to make it look different. But if that is the limit of your ability to see the similarities of Samsung's product, then that is fine. But Apple's charge has been substantiated by more than one court, so it certainly has merit. And Samsung has made changes to the product as a result, merit proved again. There are plenty of touch-interface, rectangular shaped, glass faced tablets that have not had this legal problem with Apple. So the unique similarities of Samsung's product standout as being more substantial than your claims of it being different.

right... so you using the exact words of "cloning" and "copy-pad" is not the same then? ok gotcha. and how pray tell should a tablet look like besides being a rectangle, since i seem to have limited abilities to differentiate the two? what exactly did samsung copy? i would really love to know your own reasons.

But that isn't true. Anyone could buy a gigantic truck and use it as an everyday driver. Which, for most, wouldn't be practical.

- hi I'm an f350. I'm good at towing things, picking up lumber, and making a really manly exhaust noise when you hit my pedals.
- and I'm a Honda civic, I'm good at parking, saving you tons of money on gas, and getting you and 4 friends to the Rave safely.
- I could tow you to the rave...
- no its ok, I'm good for over 300,000 miles.
- :( vrmmmmmmm!!!!! ( manly exhaust noise)

That's pretty close to a Mac vs pc ad.

Im reading this site on my 10.1. Its such a good product faster than the ipad and with such a better screen. Cant wait for ICS.

It will be interesting to see if treble damages are awarded Apple at trial. This bravado will be a factor if it is found they are in fact infringing and doing so in a way harmful to the Apple brand.

Yet another cause of action.

Rocketman

Even Apple admitted in another case that Samsung wasn't likely to steal ipad customers .

In a closed forum, to a closed audience that someone posted. See the difference?

In no way is a keynote a closed audience. Perhaps you mean that it's not an ad campaign.

Samsung is just another brand. They make a lot of okay products that are relatively cheap (we're talking about more than just phones and tablets), but these lawsuits are just silly. What I dislike is the concept that for Apple to be successful, all of their competitors must be pushed off the table entirely.

Well, at least one may be able to sell those Samsung posters as rare memorabilia once the copycat Galaxy is FINALLY banned from the Australian and other markets...

Right now iPad has better chances to be banned (in Germany) than Galaxy Tab (anywhere).

Good ad. It made me giggle like a little school girl.
People who says that this is poor advertisement must have terrible memory. You don't remember Apple's ads that compared itself to Windows, saying that it's the boring geek guy, we are the young hip guy?

Here Samsung compares itself to Apple, and says that Apple feared it, which might actually be true. If anything, it works.

Wait, are you arguing that the individuals recognizing metaphors in commercials aren't thinking, or the people NOT recognizing such aren't thinking?

Oh, and if you are arguing that the Mac vs PC commercials gave anyone their user identity....I weep for those people. I was already on one side of this fence by 1990. And I wasn't in either college or business, yet.
With the exact same implications: People driving/using X are uncool, while drivers/users of Y are hip and trendy. Who wants to be uncool?
I'm still confused as to which of those vehicles is hip. Or "college". Or "business". Car metaphors are always so poor at MR.

We weren't talking about that. I don't think I'd ever seen that before. I suppose during the Super Bowl, I know I watched it.

So, what do you want to talk about? How business worked in 1985 and whether this commercial was appropriate? For the record, there were very few "users" at the time. PCs of any brand were barely in use in business, mostly just dumb terminals with mainframes. Most jobs/tasks for people were still 100% paper driven. There are going to be few similarities.

Not talking about what? I don't understand what point you are trying to make here
