I kind of like the way it looks, but I'm not going to switch my main phone to a Samsung so that I can have one.

I have an S3 for work but I guess this won't work with it anyway.

I am very interested in seeing what Apple can do in this space.

Give them credit; SOMEONE has to go first!

Smart Watch v1 = Epic fail
Smart Watch v2 = Complete rip off of iWatch = Success

Explain that one in court Samsung

Well, ultimately the reviews aren't that great for this. It's bulky and laggy.

It seems Samsung just tried to come in early to this game, because they know Apple are working on such a thing and are trying to eat away at the market share early. The problem is that they don't really know what Apple are going to do with a wristwatch, and I don't think Apple will release something as sub-par as this.

Very interested to see what Apple do.

I bet they know a lot more than you realize. There's lots of high-tech espionage going on with billions of dollars on the line. I would be shocked if they didn't have a mole or two in Apple or their supply line.

So you know the exact timeframe Samsung had on this watch. Or are you guessing that they only started working on it when rumors began surfacing that Apple was working on it.

Why don't you just tell us what you think-- I'm sure you are very confident in your assessment of the validity of his input.

Jony Ive must be laughing pretty loudly right about now. Those things look awful. Forget the fact that the battery sucks and it's totally unresponsive to user input, they look exactly like what they are, something rushed out the door with off-the-shelf tech and no time spent on design at all. Apple will release their iWatch next year sometime using much better (bottom-up) technology, much much better design, and tons of little thoughtful UI details that let you know it's an Apple product. More than that, Apple will create a device that justifies its own existence, and actually create a new market.

I'm just hoping Apple doesn't use a nickel-based alloy for any skin-touching metal parts on the iWatch, or I (and anyone else with a metal allergy) will be unable to wear one. Titanium would be fantastic, and light, though it does scratch.

Samsung are only good at copying

They clearly should stick to copying - a battery that last 24 hours - thats ridiculous - and someone should let them know a watch is suppose to be a fashion accessory - this thing looks fugly

a screen that displays information captured in another screen...and costs $300...and...goes dead every day. good job. Not.

This doesn't really seem to be anything more than an extra screen that connects over bluetooth - like Microsoft's SmartGlass. Can't see the point.

I'd expect any future Apple watch to be a standalone device - more like Garmin's GPS watches (but with an easier to use interface) than this gimmick.

I found it most interesting that if Apple had released that exact product, everyone would be loving it. LOL

Now here comes "Apple would never release something like that"

I think it looks pretty good. How well it works remains to be seen.

I'm going to slap an :apple: logo on that watch and "watch" all the reviews turn positive.

Doubt it... if Apple turned out an iWatch that looked like this I'd still be critical of the design.
Also I'm doubtful Apple would put something on the market that only had a 1 day battery life (that by itself is a major fail).

Smart Watch v1 = Epic fail

Explain that one in court Samsung

not to mention samsung will probably base their entire engineering spec on a doc that shows side-by-side comparisons of the iWatch and their Smart Watch, and be stupid enough to let that doc leak to the public and the courts.

I want 2!

Just think of the upper body work out from wearing one on each wrist all day long. This is the first true fitness watch!

Yet another example of someone else doing it first, then Apple coming along and doing it right.

I think you might have this wrong. Perhaps someone on here can correct me ... but my impression was that Samsung got the idea from Apple because they heard that Apple was working on a watch. Then Samsung rushed through the engineering process and into production so they could be "first." But they aren't really first. They are second. Apple has been working on it. Apple just didn't want to start "selling" it first because Apple wanted it to be done right. No matter how you look at it --- that's still idea theft.

If a pen was such a ludicrous idea (for the iPhone and iPad) - there wouldn't be such a huge demand for aftermarket styli. And the market is pretty huge. Some people will just regurgitate Steve Jobs' belief system about only needing a finger.

True. I don't quite see what the issue is when a phone people the "option" to use a pen or not. Use it or not. Far better to need something and have it then to need something and not have it. Currently using the original note and there are times it makes things easier to do.

Really?

"I believe it will become a new fashion icon around the world," said Samsung CEO JK Shin.

LOL... yup. Nothing says fashionable like a big blocky hunk of rubber on your wrist with a dead battery. Well, nothing except maybe a non-emasculating, aqua-colored Google Glass.

JK and Sergey should get together and do a full line of fashion accessories :D

Still not sold on the idea of a smartwatch, but THIS POS...???

I haven't worn a watch since I was in the Army at Fort Bragg (early 2000s), and then I was only willing to spend $20-$30 on a minimally intrusive, basic time piece that I wouldn't mind getting smashed up on a jump. $300?? For a companion device??? No, thanks! A person would have to be pretty stupid to spend that much on a "smart" watch that, by itself, isn't even that smart.

If Apple does release a smartwatch as a companion iDevice, I can only imagine that it will be much better conceived than the Gear. And considering that the iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano (both stand-alone devices) cost $49 and $149 respectively, I can't see Apple's smartwatch costing more than $99.

only 41 FB likes on the press release article...seems like macrumors is giving samsung most of its publicity!!

Costs 300 bucks and only works with one phone and is butt ugly. Here's a list of phones it won't work with.

Fully expect version 2 to come out once Apple play their hand and it will be a clone of Apple's.

Epic Fail.

This is exactly what everyone would say Samsung would come out with...basically an iPod Nano with limited features. And these features are pretty bad and horrible battery life and interface. Relying on 3rd party apps is also bad. Not shocking at all, this is what I expect from an 'engineering/tech spec' focused company and not a design/usability company like Apple.

I agree.

They did this so they could beat Apple to market so they cannot be caught up in another lawsuit with Apple.

That's subjective, not a given fact. I wonder how this watch looks like and what it can do, I find that more relevant. And to be honest, I really find this thing a kids-watch. It's very subjective, but I find it really ugly designed and way to big and it lacks elegance, why not able to bend a little bit?

Whatever Apple comes out with will not be a smartphone on your wrist like this thing is. It will be a new device that combines multiple things into something you won't want to leave home without. From NFC, health monitoring, connectivity and other features along with a design that doesn't look like a watch (I mean seriously, it was SOOOO obvious what Samsungs watch was going to look like).

Yes and no. Yes, Apple should come up with something you're subscribing here, but what you think is not necessary what Apple will do. Again, it's highly subjective, let's just hope for the best.

I also find it funny that people defending Samsung are saying things like "You don't know what Apple will come out with..

But they are right, not in defending Samsung, which is also subjective, but in saying with what Apple will come up. It's simply not clear at all.

they could have come out with something just like this" and I think the majority of us know that Apple would never come out with something like this epic fail of technology.

You're suggesting that epic fail and Apple can't combine. Remember Apple's round mouse? The G4 cube? Or Ping? Final Cut X (at launch, after many many many updates it's ok but not the most popular editor any longer)
So an "Apple" that "would never come out with something like this" is again, very speculative.

At the end of the presentation of the Smart gear he said that it IS compatible with S3, S4, Note II as well with updates coming to those devices in October.
The article should mention this.

Ouch.

In all fairness, there's a lot of question about the smart-watch industry as a whole (and whether or not it will ever get off the ground).

Personally, there needs to be a lot more functionality (both uses we've thought of and some we never knew we needed) for it to be a smash hit and worth $299. I think (hope) Apple will do it right.
