Why in the world is a $299 Smartwatch only compatible with two devices at launch when they have a quadrillion devices out on the market already?

And the good thing about the cell phone revolution is that I haven't had to wear a watch to know the exact time for a long time. Why would I want to wear a watch, except for fashion purpose?

This is something I don't get at all.

I have NEVER taken out my phone to check the time. It seems so ridiculous. My watch is there to check the time, so much more convenient.

The biggest let down for it is the fact that it needs to be used in conjunction with another Samsung device, namely one that was introduced today. I think Samsung has missed a trick, as they would probably sell many more to people who don't want/have one of their smartphones yet want a piece of the smartwatch action. As long as Apple makes the device usable whether you own an iDevice or not, I don't think Samsung are going to be rustling any feathers in Cupertino.

Except that will not happen. Apple will require an iDevice, for any number of reasons. And it actually makes sense for them to do it. If you read Job's bio, it was the decision to require a Mac that liberated the iPod from the need to be complex and clunky. Will be the same for a smart watch.

Why is macrumors telling me about Samsung?

I really do not care if Samsung has a watch that is capable of brewing my morning coffee, or taking care of my bathroom needs. This is macrumors.com so let's try to focus on Macintosh (or Apple) rumors. Samsung, last I checked, is not a subsidiary of (Apple, or any of their subdivisions.).

It's happened a few times already where companies try to beat a rumored Apple product to release.

There is absolutely NO point in releasing such stupid gadgets, be they from Apple or any other company. Alas, we now have Cook at the helm instead of SJ; so anything "recommended" by analysts or the market will be accepted by him as gospel.

Unless we are talking about something ABSOLUTELY revolutionary and unique design-wise (such as a razor-thin wearable band with touch screen all over it and flexible gorilla glass à la Minority Report), anything like that will NOT replace quality standard watches, iPod Nanos or ordinary pedometers.

Buy a new phone first.

In this case it has zero to do with android. It's to do with which devices Samsung have made the client api software available to. Just like Apple, they wont let it work on old devices. Hence why its only being supported on the current models.

I get that people want to pick fault because its Samsung + Android + Watch = mouth-foaming bait but come on, at least make an effort.

You mean you are not texting, or otherwise staring at your phone, every waking minute? Must be a generational thing. ;)

Well I for one won't be buying. If it had been compatible with the iPhone then it might have been interesting. They have tried to cram too much though into it.

Please, give a bit of Objectivity:

Good points to Samsung Gear:

1-Its an Smarwatch powered by android 4.3, that means a lot of software will be developed for it.
2-Powerful Interactive Notification System with Up Level Integration (only fewAndroid 4.3 devices).
3- HANS FREE FUNCTION (or Hand Up acually makes more sense), it's an good selling point.
4- Amoled Screen, looks awesome.

Bad:
1- Maybe pricey, 300$ stand alone seems much, but most Dumb "STYLE" Watches cost more than that. Whatever still pricey.
2- Battery: 24h maybe a No-No for some users, while most others actuall reomves they waches every nigth will be comfortable.

So-So:

1.9 Mp Camera... mmm maybe useful for some Papparazi videos... so

Bulk: It's an BIG Watch, some will love, some will hate, it's an personal likely.

I consider (As actually promoted) as an effective partner for the new Galaxy Note 3.

I'm as Galaxy S4 Owner, I'm very impressed, but not cosidering to run to buy it, maybe for Xmas if some app does rise the gap.

--------------------

Other Annoucements:

Galaxy Note 3: as the Galazy S4 just an little improvement over previous model, while touchwhiz was hugely improved, is not an radical evolution as The Note 2 was on Note 1, btw it's and very good device, very useful on its ow niche.

Galaxy Note 10.1 2014: At Last a real Rival for Retina iPad, the S-Pen it's an god feature, but as every 2560x1600 has very few optimized app for this huge screen, while S-Pen and basic apps add an awesome value over iPad, the lack of optimized 3rd party apps still an issue, but as Hardware is the very first rivaling the iPad retina with superior specs and the Digitizer which gives great value for artists.

---------------------------

Only thing needs Apple/Peebble to do with SG, is to add hands free funtion to its devices.

Your assessment is very generous - especially considering what the Verge review had to say about the product.

Personally, I don't see what the capabilities this thing has that make it worthwhile at any price point. I don't see how it can, given its current feature set, make any kind of improvement in any part of my day. Even if it was only a $99 product, I would not at all feel compelled to buy one.

Add to that the fact that the product is not yet ready for prime time from a user experience perspective...

It's not surprising though. Samsung's approach seems to be to throw as many different kinds of products against the wall as it can and see what sticks.

It's got an 800mhz processor but multiple hands on demos are already describing lag ruining the experience....what gives?

It's as big as a mini-Galaxy HUGE edition. Do you have to charge your watch every day? I think the word you call it is "bad design," poorly thought out. But it's FIRST!

Any of you guys wearing a Microsoft Table on your wrist? It was announced just days before the iPhone.

I hope Apple does NOT create an iWatch. I've never thought it was necessary. With that as my opinion of making a smartwatch, it shouldn't be a surprise that I think this thing completely reeks.

camera... really?
charge every night?... Not on my watch.
style...meh, I like metal
70 apps at launch... I downloaded 70 apps at lunch
supporting device necessary... Why not just use that? Or does it lag too?

this thing is going the way of Zune.

You mean you are not texting, or otherwise staring at your phone, every waking minute? Must be a generational thing. ;)

Hahaha. I guess you're right. For those in the younger generation who are pulling out their phone from their pockets every 5 minutes, I guess a watch is not needed.

Mine is usually kept on a counter-top when I'm at home, and not with me. And sometimes I leave it in my car. When it IS in my pocket, I only pull it out when it buzzes (I have a text message or email).

I wonder if Apple will try and jump on board the wireless charging thing anytime soon... if they did, it would save a good amount of space on a watch to not need a cable and it would be a lot easier to just slip it off your wrist and set it down on the table for it to charge....

That looks pretty good but it sounds like it won't be much competition for Apple's watch (at least in this first iteration). This is what you get when you rush a product out just to try and be first.

Yes, the mythical Apple watch that nobody has yet seen and that probably does not even exist. At this point, the iWatch is as much vaporware as the Apple TV.

You can't compare EXISTING products with rumored fantasy products. Full stop.

Perv cam

Comes with a spy cam? Wouldn't wearing this attract accusations of voyeurism?

What's next the ankle watch version for the Japanese up-skirt market?

The $299 is pretty much a rip off. You can get a Nexus 7 less than this.

Not defending this turd, but miniaturization is expensive. And as an owner of the original N7, that wasn't exactly a steal either... I overspent by $199... It's sitting in my drawer unused.

This is just the beginning. Samsung will soon be releasing all different sized watches. I'm hoping that the 6.3" watch with a stylus catches on. Its battery will last 4 whole hours!

My guess? Apple never planned on making a watch. They just spread a rumor to see how stupid of a piece of junk Samsung would make. I don't think they expected it to be quite this crappy. Samsung, you have outdone yourselves!
