I'd also be willing to wager that Apple could put out the greatest watch known to mankind and because it had an Apple logo it would get bashed, from people, like yourself for instance.

Works both ways you know.

Please tell me about my Apple bashing.

Doa

One day battery life. Requires a bluetooth connection to another device to provide functionality.

One word: Fail.

Someone posted that this is the start of the "smartwatch wars". No; this is just the sacrificial lamb. I watched the Samsung intro video. The CEO ought to be fired. This product is an obscene waste of corporate resources.

Take that Apple FanBois...a company that ACTUALLY INNOVATES!;)

This thing is gonna be a huge....flop.:p

HA HA HA...Hamstrung took the bait!!!!

My other thoughts on the iwatch.

Could be cool, but i think it will really need to have a wow factor thats going to make me/others switch from a normal watch. Yes, the iwatch will do fancy things, but lets face it, to switch to a 5 day battery life is a tough call for me. I have casio's with solar that just keep going, ones with a normal battery that needs a swap say every 2 years and a citizen with eco drive. Pretty much all of use have this sort of set up with a watch, so we are definitely engrained with not having to worry about our watches. To shift people over to a much shorter charging period is tricky. I tried the pebble, sold it due to it being a bit annoying at staying connected via bluetooth (the main reason for the thing!), but the other nagging thing was charging the thing every few days.

1 day battery life, are they freaking serious? This is not a smart phone; it is a watch, and I don't want to be plugging it in every 24 hrs!

Massive fail, as usual wait for the real McCoy from Apple. This is a prime example of why Samsung copy, their original ideas suck!

It reminds me of the old joke. Some guys are standing in line for the theater. The guy in front is showing off all the amazing features of the gadget on his wrist. As they move ahead in line he keeps kicking ahead a big box on the ground in front of him. Finally the second guy asks "What is that box you keep pushing in front of you?" to which he replies "The Battery."

The Qualcomm watch is uglier than the Samsung. Why waste screen space with that horrible gray strip housing an oddly placed logo?

Qualcomm also announced a $300 smartwatch today... with 3-5 day battery life and an included inductive bedside charger. Interestingly, the battery is on the bottom of the strap (see left photo), so the display can be thinner.

Its Mirasol screen is a Qualcomm invention, which combines e-Ink low power with kind of a metallic color display that's visible in sunlight.

Basically links to an Android (possibly iOS later) phone and allows the usual Bluetooth call view and control, music playback controls, along with notifications, calendar, weather, etc. Qualcomm promises an SDK for developers.

Samsung fragmentation is a subset of Android fragmentation.
Every fragmentation within Samsungs android-based phones is also an fragmentation of Android in general.

In order to not suffer from fragmentation, every Android device that is capable of running the newest version of Android, would have to be able to work with Galaxy Gear.

Everything else = fragmentation.
All the good reasons for fragmentation are unimportant to the user.

Don't name it Fragmentation, Name it DIVERSITY, devices adapted to consumers, not consumers adapted to a single device.

Do you think it would be possible to use some combination of solar and battery in an iWatch? I think if it is intended to be a sport watch, water and shock resistant, and good battery life, that it has some excellent possibilities. I read here on an earlier iWatch thread about some new tech for non invasive reading of blood sugar. Now imagine that on an iWatch along with heart rate, etc. I think there is a good market for that if it hits the high points.

I've read a lot of positive posts about the new Mac Pro, many of them loving the design. A round computer is revolutionary. Of course if anyone else had made a round computer even more powerful it would have been a gimmick. And I saw the rumors of a cheap plastic iPhone become a wonderful idea in the past few weeks. Plastic phones which were junk according to many here are now fantastic. Samsung Galaxy= plastic junk, iPhone 5C in lime green plastic =great idea. I can't name specific people who have flip flopped on either of these, but simply by reading this forum daily I have seen a big shift from negative to positive.

Of course you can't name specific people. Case closed. Thanks for the confirmation.

It's not worth my time to search thousands of posts to check if someone flip flopped. But we both know that by reading here daily that what I said is correct. Plastic went from garbage to good.

Pebble and Gear are two very different things. Pebble is a watch+. Gear is a gadget that happens to also offer a watch (just like mobile phones do). I did not follow Samsung announcement and I wonder if they actually call Gear a "smart watch". All reviews do call it a smart watch but I think it's misleading. Nobody would want a watch with one day battery life. However, if it's a gadget that is very useful to some people those people may consider buying it. Fitness, health monitoring seem to offer a value for some. It's hard to predict which other features will offer a significant value for regular smart phone users.

The Pebble is a smartwatch not a watch+ with its own SDK, but it can function on its own as a watch, timer and so far, as a remote. It interacts with apps on your phone. I think the the Gear is trying to be more like a "super" smartwatch. This is the biggest problem with it trying to be too many things at once. That one day battery life probably doesn't take into account the use of apps, camera and calling. Being used for other things may cut that battery life in half. As the reviewer said the demos they had didn't last a day.

I bet iwatch rumors were to get Samsung to release this turd and the real deal for apple is a new Apple TV

An iwatch will most likely have most of the same issues as the gear

Apple please don't

I think this is pretty embarrassing... I hope Apple doesn't release one.

I agree. The coolest thing Apple could do right now would be not to release a smart-watch at all. They should continue to work on the fuelband concept with nike, and just add features to it. That way, they never have to copy anything.

Qualcomm and Samsung just don't get it. They both are making watches that have wrist straps that can't be changed. Pebble even makes that aspect a selling point of their watch; the ability to change straps using typical straps. There were many people that had ordered the longer straps when it was offered by Pebble. I know it sounds like a moot point but don't underestimate comfort.

Yeah, scruff! Show me one time anyone here has ever said plastic was terrible and cheap!

Fanboy sellout hater astroturfers.

:D I know, I have to get my eyes checked. I must have misread all of those posts claiming Samsung phones were crap because they were made out of plastic, and Apple would never lower their standards and make a plastic phone.

Really Samsung? This is what you came up with?

And what's with the camera on the strap?

I believe Samsung is far more innovative than Apple could ever hope to be. They've invented the world's first fap-cam.

(Apologies if someone else said this already. I couldn't face going through 12 pages of this thread)

love how they try to beat Apple in the "first watch" race and fail miserably.

now, i don't expect any company to make me want to wear a high tech watch any time soon, not even Apple, but i at least expect Apple to keep their standards.

Samsung Galaxy Gear

Wow... thats just... wow. Its hideous. For a moment I thought they were going with a vintage look on it. But I don't think there was any cohesion in that "style" especially with the rubber, no leather? And that bulge for a camera. No to the hefty price as well. The name on the other hand I like!!!
:apple:

Whats interesting is the battery. Rumors say apple wanted 5 days of use. This watch lasts 1 day using a 315mAh battery, so going by that a 5 day battery would be approx 1500mAh, which isn't far off the iphones 1700 odd mAh.

You can see then what a design issue this is and the delay in making something last 5 days with bluetooth, vibration, and a full iOS.

I would guess that Apple's watch wouldn't be a stand alone device rather an add-on IE all of the processing power occurring in your iPhone and it only being a low powered bluetooth touch display. Essentially Siri/Notification Center on your wrist.

There is no reason this thing should be $300.

Hoping

Hoping the iWatch is a total bait and switch. Allowing apple to unveil the real product that has nothing to do with wristwatches. Going to be something completely new and awesome.

How do you know how big it is? And expensive, yes, but it's a Swiss watch, what did you expect, and it's expensive in the same way the iPhone is.
As for no one knows about it? Well everyone that reads engadget ot T3 or Stuff or Pocket Lint or any other tech news website, will have read about it.

Oh and you obviously didn't bother reading the watches website as it actually DOES have apps being developed for it.

Just looking at the profile pic it juts out and would likely catch on all sorts of objects. I've never heard of it and I read those mags (occassionally) and sites. If I haven't heard of it and I consider myself very tech savvy, 99.99% of the population most definitely won't have a clue.

Having apps being developed and having apps for it are 2 different things! No one will support this in the long run because the userbase is miniscule because cost of entry is too high. If they used some open source version maybe you could get some 3rd party developers, but even that's a stretch.
