For a first gen version it looks nice, but it’s hindered by the small front screen. 4.6 inches ain’t gonna cut it. You will be using it like a tablet majority of the time.

Why won't a 4.6" display ain’t gonna cut it if Apple is selling tons of new iPhone 7 and 8 with a 4.7" display and even selling the iPhone SE until recently with a 4" display?

Good luck fitting a 12.9” iPad Pro in your pocket. Even if it’s folded in quarters!!

This is awesome. I want a tablet in my pocket. Dont want to carry that huge ipad tablet everywhere. The best camera is the one you have with you. The same thing apple to this samsung tablet

Sorry apple fan but ipad cant compare with this tablet that can fit in your pocket.

Are you serious right now? Samsung tablets can't compete with an iPad in productivity and you want to tell me it will be any better with no software support on this foldable phone (by foldable i mean two phones glued in the middle)? I don't have to go to the moon to know it's not made out of blue cheese.

Yeah yeah blah blah.. iPad's rule the waves etc even though they run exactly the same OS as the iPhone.

Lets not forget this is THE FIRST ITERATION of this device. I don't remember the first iPhone being packed full of productive apps on day one.
But that's the thing isn't it.. Software is quick to adapt. If more and more of these types of devices pop up on the market things will change rapidly. just like they did when touch screen became the norm.

But go ahead and be Judge, Jury and Executioner on a device that's not left the auditorium yet and damn anyone for trying to push things forward.

It can be 5th generation. It’s running same old software and the lack of good apps is still the same and end result is still the same.

Buy an iPhone XR and 11" ipad (bigger display).
Pocket $400.

Heck you can buy an XS Max and 11" ipad pro for basically the same price.

This is going to flop hard at $2,000 starting price with how thick it is and useless folded it is.

The price is really not so much important at the moment because this is a first gen kind of prototype device that is not meant to sell in millions. I see it as a kind technical preview that some enthusiasts will buy to try it out. The questions is how this will develop in the coming years and what price we will see in 2 maybe years....

Yeah, that's why I left iOS. Doesn't matter how many generations pass, it's still painfully bad.
Any chance you can use your clairvoyance to tell me this weekends lottery numbers?

You left iOS when iPads run on iOS and run circles around android tablets. I rest my case your honour.

Simple question for everyone (sadly on everyone of these competitor threads).

If Apple had done this. If this was an Apple Keynote.
Would you:
a. Be shouting this down as dumb, over priced, lacking quality etc....
b. Be falling over yourself to praise the innovation, sticking two fingers up at the competition and declaring Apple to be gods work on earth?

Honest answer...

I don't use an android tablet. I have a One+ 3 that has served me perfectly well for years and allows me to do whatever I want with the OS - file transfer, dev work etc... I kinda like that sort of freedom.

My iPad was an over-priced Kindle at the end of the day. I went for a Surface Book (2 - currently) and never looked back.

Can you get both of them in one pocket?

Well no.

But I can put my wallet in my pocket with a lot of extra dollars left in it... and I'll have two devices that are better suited for what they're supposed to be.

A great phone and a great tablet.... not some mutant hybrid.

I'll even have some extra money to buy a new backpack if I so desire. :)

I see your point. But I was coming at this purely from the monetary aspect.

Wanna know what I think is funny?

No one cares about Android tablets.

Then Samsung made an Android tablet that folds into a (small) phone... and everyone is going gaga over it.

Neat. :p

I am sure it may succeed as a tablet than a mobile! I hope they bring dual SIM in this. Folded screen not looking good, unfolded posture needs first hand review. Obviously, cases and screen protector will be a nightmare unless Samsung fixes one for a each device during assembly process like Chinese mid rangers do (Honor and OnePlus). We need to see it's size in the folded mode whether it takes huge space in our pockets.

Still good luck to Samsung for the great innovative product

buuuuut I can get an iPhone AND an iPad Pro and that's way better and much cheaper (cough)

Plus Apple will show them all. In 2-3 years they'll have a similar device and will sue Samsung for stealing it, so go f yourself Samsung. You suck. You only copy and can't innovate.

Typical iSheep comment...

And vendors that design and manufacture phones in China.:D The price of Samsung phones are really going through the roof. Apple, please don't copy.
If Apple releases this the price would be double the Samsung version just like it is now.

Wow and people complain about the price of the iPhone! This is ridiculous especially for something that looks half baked.

So let's recap the arguments:

1) People moan about the iPhone X being overpriced at $1k, but feel that $2k is a reasonable price for the Galaxy Fold.

2) The galaxy fold appears to sport a notch and lack a headphone jack, yet no criticism seems to have been levelled at this.

3) When folded, it's a thick phone with a small screen, and when unfolded, the screen is in this weird limbo where its too big as a phone or too small as a tablet.

4) Are developers even going to update their apps to support a device with niche appeal?

However I look at it, the Galaxy Fold appears to have made too many design compromises just so Samsung could finally have a use for their folding screen technology. How is this even the definition of "innovation", when you start with the technology and then struggle to find a viable use case for it?

Its small by standard of top end smartphones. This thing is priced at over $2000 after taxes and has a 4.6 inch front display. Right now it’s just a tablet that happens to have a front display.

1. Most people are rightfully bringing up the price of this device.. However, first iteration. Always cost more for those that want to spend the cash. Tech moves forward, prices come down and things get, "thinner".

2. Many folk have raised the issue of durability. Headphone jacks are a meh at this point.

3. Have you touched one? Bit hard to make a judgement call really isn't it.

4. How long will this be niche? How hard is it to make apps for both tablet and phone running on the same OS?

It's weird this.. It's almost like the rest of the tech world doesn't wait around for Apple to do something.

Valid Use Case:

Imagine you are out at a party, everyone is flipping through their phones...

Suddenly, as extreme boredom sets in, you begin going into tablet mode...

The party crowd is in awe and you become the life of the party.

Horizontal fold will never happen:
1) It would mean when folded you would have a square 1:1 ratio shape in order to get proper ratio tablet when unfolded
2) If you want to keep rectangle shape when folded, something reminiscent of current phones, when open the screen would have some insane tall ratio completely unusable for tablet or phone purposes.

It's simple as this: take your Razr and imagine the front plate being a screen, flip it open and then imagine all that area being a screen. Did you get a tablet? No. What you got is only a taller phone. And then you factor in that small screen like Razr front plate is completely unusable with Android or iOS interface cause both rely on giant headers and footer with content in between them and scaling it to iPhone 4 like display would be a mess. And on top of that you factor in the that both Android and iOS aren't ready for tall displays either because they require you to constantly go from bottom edge of the screen to navigate to top of the edge of the screen for app contextual actions.

You know what the future is? MicroLED slider. Imagine two iPhone Xes stacked underneath each other, you swipe the bottom one to the left, it hinges right into top display and you got yourself double the screen estate.

I hear you and I believe the use of a "fold" should be to make the current phone size smaller to put in your pocket (just like a flip phone). The same screen real estate would be used.

Using the fold to make the screen size even bigger (with your portable phone) really isn't the way to go.

You end up with a bulkier phone which costs as much (if not more) than a tablet.

A valid case use is just for anyone that wants a phone and tablet all in one. Pretty simple really.

Again. If Apple had done this - tbh they could have done it really REALLY easily due to iOS being what it is and already converting (up-scaling) iPhone apps to iPad in the past, would this even be a discussion?
It would just be the new now and every sheeple on this site would be breaking their wrists trying to wrestle credit cards out of their wallets.

The honest answer is: yes

(...except the responses would be at least twice as outraged!)

Exactly, if Apple had done this people in the forum would be trashing it to hell and back, also the news outlets like the BBC would lead with a headline like iPhone Fold starts at a ridiculous £2,000.

It looks like a really thick device, the bezels are big and i can't see it serving much of a purpose. There are already phones on the market with displays at 6.5" that isn't much further away from the 7.3 of the fold when it's unfolded.

Oh and by the way Nokia 6310i is 19 mm and this fold is just slightly thinner than that. So that's what you are putting in your pocket. A tv remote.

Yeah, I can remember back then when EVERYONE was complaining about the thickness of phone instead of, you know, they fact you had A PHONE IN YOUR POCKET!!

Jeebus. Tell you what. Lets not bother trying new things shall we even if the first iteration is janky.
I have got the first iPhone. You know what.. It's pretty damn janky and was til the iPhone 4!!
