Some of these responses in this thread are just going to be hilarious when Apple tries to go down this road and claim they are pioneering this innovation on their own.

Suddenly it will become the most amazing product ever and everyone will love it and the $2499 starting price will be “justifiable”

lol

For a first gen product, that looks a lot better than I would have guessed. Clearly I won’t be buying one at that price, but better execution than I would have imagined.

It doesn't sound like it's actually a folding LED screen in the literal sense - more like it's a hinged display with no bezel, with the hinge positioned such that the two halves of the LED screen are always touching - something easy to do with OLED or micro-LED.

Its way to thick folded up but its still super cool and a great start for the next phase of smartphones. Gotta give em props for this.

I don't mind the thickness. At least it has great battery life.

Lets see Samsungs annual report 2020 whether this baby brought the sales figures up a notch. Otherwise it was just a try to position the brand as "more innovative". Whatever that means.

Btw. watch the keynote if you can. If Steve comes out in a minute, I wouldn't be surprised.

Samsung shows us why this is DOA. I hope this trend dies before it even starts. Foldable phones are awful. Its just gimmick but this product shows how useless it really is.
It will be good when it costs $300.

Since when did “innovation” mean “throw unorthodox ideas against a wall and see what sticks”?

Face ID technology (which the competitors still can’t replicate) or the Apple A-series chip (which the competitors still can’t outperform) is a lot more innovative than a screen on a hinge which you can open — to double its size and halve the thickness. Wow! How did they manage that?!

Are you seeing something I’m not?

FaceID is just old Xbox Kinect technology. Nobody wants to recreate it because it's nowhere near worth the expense and inconvenience of implementing. And Apple only forced it because they wanted to increase the cost of their phones but couldn't work out how to get in-screen fingerprint sensors working like other manufacturers have.

I’m not sure you’d want to be “exploring the tenderloin” in SF with your new 2K smartphone :rolleyes:

It has a err... reputation (from wiki for a good explanation)
Nestled near the downtown area, the Tenderloin has historically resisted gentrification, maintaining a seedy character and reputation for crime.[21] Squalid conditions, homelessness, crime, illegal drug trade, prostitution, liquor stores, and strip clubs give the neighborhood a seedy reputation.[22]

It's truly pathetic at this point.

Gosh... the price of convergence.

Let's not forget that this Samsung "phone" screen is rather small... and the "tablet" screen is around an iPad Mini size. It's sorta the worst of both worlds.

You can get an iPhone and an 11" iPad Pro and it's still cheaper than this.

And both of those Apple devices... while separate... are each better at what they do.

This reminds me of the 2-in-1 laptop craze. "Laptop and tablet in one" they said.

But is it really?

:p
