I dont see the point. The screen when closed is tiny. You will have to use it open 99% of the time.
Nearly $500 overpriced IMO; $1500 would have been good entry price (and still high for a phone even with its specs).
And that weird corner notch lol, just why.

Gen 1 product.

Yes Kinect was bigger but tracked your entire body and was doing it back in 2010.

FaceID isn't worth the $300-$400 premium versus single lens facial recognition since if you care about security you're using a long passcode anyway.

Apple are going to drop FaceID in a couple of years when other manufacturers have near 100% screens and they're stuck with a massive "old fashioned" notch.

They have this full screens already, soon they will have under display cameras too

apple execs probably feel this folding phone is too thick...

pretty cool for an initial attempt. typical high cost for something new.

i like how Samsung kept a button for unlocking.

Tiny phone screen, super thick, awkward notch, no tablet apps, $2,000 - I can't see a reason why anyone would buy this. You're better off getting a phone and a tablet. This all feels forced just to be first to market. They have been perfecting this tech since 2013 and this is the best they could come up with? Might as well keep it under wraps and wait until it's a product that actually brings value to people.

It had nowhere NEAR the precision or security of FaceID and again, wasn't shrunk down to mobile. Touch screen tech also existed before the iPhone. But NOTHING was like the iPhone.

FaceID can exist as long as selfie cameras exist. They will likely get the tech behind the screen.

great... apple will use this to justify an iphone at that price

Honestly, not sure what this thing is.
I would never use it as a smartphones because it's a thick as a brick. I won't use it as a tablet either. This is a classic example of a product trying to be 2 things at one but being neither. Flexible displays do have potential but I don't think this is where it will shine.

...am I'm missing something? The display itself doesn't "fold", it has two displays that line up perfectly next to each other with no air gap. Similar to how huge LED concert/stage screens meet up to appear as one giant display. Again, I could be wrong though.

Not for me. It looks like a big remote control when closed with small display on the front.

You're missing the part where the OLED panel folds.

It's things like this that helps to remind me why I purchase Apple products. I get frustrated with Apple sometimes but this device by Samsung puts it all in perspective. This thing is awful and is going to be a huge flop.

Oh and thin keyboards that get stuck all the time that nobody wanted.

I have the latest MBP (2018) and when I return to the old style keyboard of my MacBook Air I feel the keys as gobbly and imprecise. So even though I didn't ask for a new keyboard I do enjoy the precision and clickiness of the new one. And no stuck keys so far.

It is “strange” simply because of a tall aspect ratio and the unfolded size is smaller than the iPad mini?

If you're coming from a Galaxy S9... the "phone" screen will be tiny when folded. Just imagine how small the keys on the keyboard will be on the front screen.

No problem. Just unfold it to reveal the bigger "tablet" screen. Great. And now it will take two hands to type.

So you've got tiny phone screen when folded... but unwieldy tablet screen when unfolded.

I think what people were expecting was a folded screen size similar to the phones we have now... and then it unfolds to an even bigger screen.

But this starts as a smaller phone screen to what we've got now... thus forcing you to unfold almost every time you need to do something other than just check notifications.

You're right though. This is just a start. It'll be interesting to see where it goes!
