People complaining about the price are missing the point of this device. It's the first step in the foldable displays, of course it will carry a premium. Give it 3-4 years, the price will drop. Foldable screens are expensive to make.

To me the most thoughtful responses in here are the ones that recognize that this is a first attempt at this technology… They are pushing the bleeding edge here and this is just the beginning not the end.
Exactly.

To me this is Samsung doing a "Proof of Concept".

And I am excited.

It’s so ridiculous and looks like a brick straight out of the 1990s... it’s gonna be a major flop.

Apple's Face ID keynote fail disagrees with you.

Actually, Craig Federighi is a terrific example of a presenter who IS charismatic, but is also often nervous.

..He smiles and laughs, engages with the audience, communicates well, has dynamic range in his voice, and sounds a lot less like he is reading the board-approved script than many other presenters.

This is pretty slick and looks much better than I thought it would. A phone and tablet in one. Would I pay 2 grand? No, but I can see the appeal.

It's a neat idea for sure. A phone that turns into a tablet.

But the "phone" screen is kinda small and in a weird tall aspect ratio.

And the "tablet" screen is smaller than an iPad Mini.

So it's kinda strange overall.

And yes... that price is bonkers. :p

Watch him struggle to pull up Google Maps.

And are they kidding with the bezels on the front and the thickness of the phone when folded? LOL

great... apple will use this to justify an iphone at that price
No not Apple, it is consumers justifying the price. All companies set a price, however when the consumer cannot justify the price it then does not sell.

So it's kinda strange overall

It is “strange” simply because of a tall aspect ratio and the unfolded size is smaller than the iPad mini?

That seems really subjective and arbitrary as a way to decide it is a “strange device”

It’s a new concept and idea…
It is different…

They are trying something new and pushing the boundaries here.

I totally love the effort here.
Just the start.

Hideous when closed, what's with the tiny little screen and these huge edges? Xiaomi shows Samsung how to make a nice looking foldable phone.

1) Kinect technology isn't anything close to wait FaceID is doing. Read more about it. It's also far smaller and had tons of hurdles to get into handheld mobile. Its like saying the iPhone was just simply a different implementation of previous garbage.

2) The bit about "couldn't work out" in screen fingerprinting is pure speculation on your part and was publicly debunked.

3) FaceID likely took years, not a 6 month backup plan when they "realized" in screen fingerprint functionality wouldn't work.

Yes Kinect was bigger but tracked your entire body and was doing it back in 2010.

FaceID isn't worth the $300-$400 premium versus single lens facial recognition since if you care about security you're using a long passcode anyway.

Apple are going to drop FaceID in a couple of years when other manufacturers have near 100% screens and they're stuck with a massive "old fashioned" notch.

DOA. This won't get any measurable traction. And Apple will not create an iPhone that unfolds into an iPad Mini-esque form factor. Samsung is as terrible at leading as they are great at following.

The only way this could have a greater assurance of an early death is if Essential had launched it.

There's those who innovate, and then... there's the others... 

I'm always amazed of people that come to MacRumors to just bash Apple. Can't you just celebrate if you like it?.

On a separate note, I do want to read reviews and see how this device behaves and the the extra value of this kind of concept in real life scenarios.

...am I'm missing something? The display itself doesn't "fold", it has two displays that line up perfectly next to each other with no air gap. Similar to how huge LED concert/stage screens meet up to appear as one giant display. Again, I could be wrong though.

Not for me. It looks like a big remote control when closed with small display on the front.

Thank God the majority of the comment section isn’t one of the driving forces behind innovation and R&D at any of these companies.

“It’s different - ugh”
“It’s weird”

Folks. It’s a new idea on the bleeding edge.
You get nowhere if you don’t push the boundaries

A really thick phone at twice the price, or a small tablet at four times the price. Jeez. Just enable telephony on the 7” tablets already. Also enable it on the 12.9” tablets; I’ve got AirPods. I could have an iPad and an Apple Watch for the rare occasions I don’t have my iPad with me.
