Got my pre-order in for the 512 Fold 3. iPhone users will obviously dismiss anything that Apple hasn't fed them yet but once they do, then it will be the greatest thing ever! Remember all the arguments about not needing or wanting AMOLED, Always On Display, 120hz, In screen Touch ID... Yea wait till you guys get 120hz and hopefully a fold this decade. 🤣

I did too. Plus an iPhone 13 in September. Plus an iPad Mini, if a new one comes out. And an Apple Watch 7.

This is going to be an expensive next few months.

Just go into a Best Buy or Samsung store and touch and feel these new Galaxy devices of the last 2 years. They look like they are from the future compared to iPhone. Rather, the iPhone looks ancient compared to the tech that Samsung is putting out

It's not that the iPhone looks "ancient". It's just getting boring. The upgrades from year to year are evolutionary, not revolutionary. And even regular Samsung phones like the S21 and Note 20 are same old same old, just better insides.

I like new concepts, like folding phones and flip phones. Shake things up.

And if you prefer iOS all the looks of the Samsung phones are irrelevant if the software isn’t to your tastes. People buy phones on more than just design and specs

If the rumors of AOD for the 13 are true, then I'll get that too. But if not, then I'm holding on to my 11 Pro Max.

I'll probably get the 13 too, but maybe not the pro max like my iphone 11 and I wont be waiting to order. I doubt if I buy the new MBP when it comes out like I was sure I was going to. There's just no incentive anymore.

Thats fine. OS is personal preference. As mentioned these phones are 3 years ahead of what Apple can do. The fold has TWO high resolution screens that are 120hz. The iPhone doesn’t even have one.

Under display camera compared to that abomination notch that the iPhone has had for years.

It’s real embarrassing for Apple. How are there still apple fanboys when the gulf in quality exists like this is beyond me. Samsung is just running up the score now.

Samsung phones don’t run iOS, that’s how there are still ‘apple fanboys’. The single most important feature of a phone is its OS. Wrong OS, no sale.

But it’s not reflecting in sales. So it’s clearly not something the mass want when it comes to flagship devices. S21 ultra for one is an amazing phone but the sales are below Samsung’s expectations

Under display camera is good for content but produces awful photos. So I wouldn’t say this is a positive at this stage. We all know Apple wouldn’t release that until it was perfect and usable. Samsung are happy releasing it even if the quality is bad that’s the difference

Samsung will always bring our new tech first as they are happy releasing it and developing it year on year. Apple would only release features when in their eyes it’s ready for a mass market of people.

There are fanboys as they prefer iOS and don’t like the android software experience and to them they will wait for features

What do you mean by "perfect"? Everything is a compromise. With the Fold 3, you would not use the under-screen camera for selfies. You'd use the main camera array and the front screen. The under-screen camera would only be used for video calls, where quality is not as important. So the compromise is poorer video call quality in exchange for better content consumption and aesthetics.

You say that Apple would not release something that was not perfect and usable. But Apples front facing camera system is in a big, black rectangle that significantly cuts into the screen space of the phone. If a "perfect" solution is a camera system that takes great images while not obscuring any screen, then Apple's solution is not "perfect". It is a compromise.

It is just an odd claim to make. If Apple only releases "perfect" solutions, why has their front facing camera array changed over the years? Is it "perfect" now? If so, why did Apple release all those other generations of imperfect cameras? Was it "perfect" with the iPhone 4 (the first iPhone to have a front facing camera)? If so, why has Apple been changing it?

I suggest thinking about things differently. Decide what is most important to you. Is it screen space? Is is video calling? Whatever it is, find a phone that best matches you needs and wants. Don't start from the premise that some corporation is perfect and the products they make are exactly what is right for you.

Can't have reports unless people are buying the product. Hardly anyone wants this nonsense.
I mean over 2.5 million second gen foldables shipped by Samsung is definitely not "hardly anyone".

And for the "witty" comics who are saying that if Apple's name was on it people here would buy it....perhaps so because if Apple does it this technology will be done right.
I have to say this supposition is always fascinating to see.
I mean in this particular case what would make somebody think Apple foldables as a technology will be the ones that are: "done right"? Actually what does this even mean? because it's definitely not clear(even to Apple itself I would say).

Samsung obviously has basically unmatched experience when it comes to foldable smartphones. They've been developing flexible displays and thinking of ways to implement them in products long before Apple. The improvements they've made from 1st generation to 3rd generation are really impressive from a hardware stand point, Apple really has a lot to learn from them. This being said, in my opinion there are high chances that in the future it will be very hard to compete with Samsung's foldables the same way it's very hard to compete with their Mobile Oled Displays, the same way is very hard to compete with LG's TV Oled Displays. I know Samsung will sell their foldable Oled displays to other companies but I'm not sure they will sell the materials they use to build their smartphones and those will be the key to their advantage vs competitors.

Samsung is enjoying the people testing this for them because the ones buying this right away just want to be first on the block to brag to their friends. That fold is so ugly only a diehard Samsung fan would try to pretend it's not noticeable.
That's quite condescending attitude.

Can't hate on Samsung. Very impressed with Samsung. The 2021 Samsung line up looks great. Ahead of the game. Good job Samsung! Competition is great. Especially nowadays. Hopefully, Apple will be able to deliver some innovation.

Expecting for Apple's September event invites go out end of this month :) Cannot wait.
I agree, it's not like Apple is the only company that can make good hardware. Samsung flagship hardware is cool. I know a number of people with Huawei flagship devices and they are solid and have really high spec hardware....8GB RAM, camera/optics licensed from Leica. good battery life. There is just too much politics and personal sensitivity (If you want to call it that) spreading into them. I stick with Apple's ecosystem because I have always used Mac computers since the 512K and only have to deal with "Win OS" crap at work on a few of the Video edit systems. Every time I have an issue with one of them, I just want to throw it on the floor and smash it.

New tech is expensive.

People seem to forget that when the OG iPhone came out it was SUPER expensive for the time. New tech; expensive. After a few years it comes into lines with the market with scale.
That is completely true in all aspects of tech. I think when I got my first Palm Treo 600 from Sprint...in 2003, it was almost $800.00 in contract.

By perfect I’m talking image quality. If the image quality is worse with under display camera then don’t bother. The quality needs to be the same all across. Notch or punch hole.
We all know the notch isn’t a big deal for most people but we know it’s there due to Face ID and no doubt it will go when under display camera is ready which at this stage it’s certainly not.

on foldables you can get away with it as there’s still another punch hole for the camera on the front display. On normal phones they wouldn’t release this

So which iteration of the iPhone front facing camera array was "perfect"? And why is "isn't a big deal for most people" considered "perfect"?

Again, every design decision is a compromise. Samsung decided to sacrifice video call quality to get a more satisfying display. Apple decided to sacrifice screen/body ratio to get their FaceID. (I doubt Apple is as far along in their under screen camera development, so they probably don't even have the option of making the same decisions Samsung has made.)

I'm not saying that any given person should want or need the same things from a phone that another person would. Video call quality on a phone is surely very important to some. But simply declaring a product "perfect" because of company that made it is silly, especially when that very same company will tell you they improve that product every single year.

2.5M shipped isn't much especially when you're talking about worldwide shipping. Microsoft sold 2M+ Zunes in 2 years and where are the Zunes? lol. This foldable stuff is nonsense and it just shows that Samsung has no power of innovation. These devices are thick, gimmicky, have obvious design flaws and are designed for the first kid on the block with one to show off.

I think I’m gonna get these, that way Apple can’t scan any of my photos. Samsung and Google would never
/S

Actually if you get the new Google Pixel phones and load Calyx or Graphene on it, Samsung, Google, nor Apple can scan your photos.

Not $2.5M dollars, 2.5 million phones at over $1000 a crack. (billions!)
Yeah I knew it was 2.5M phones shipped, especially since I did use the word SHIPPED in my last post, and I didn't use the $ when talking about the Zune. I"m sure you could see that $ was a typo.
Oh yeah BILLIONS because there's no R&D to pay for, no employees to pay for, no materials or manufacturing costs involved, no distribution costs, just pure profit. 🙄

We are talking about a new category of smartphones at the most premium prices so it's not really bad at all especially as Samsung met their sales targets each generation, Zune is irrelevant as a point of comparison with any Galaxy Fold.
Anyway Samsung's Foldable smartphones still sold in millions(so saying hardly anybody bought them is incorrect) and this year Samsung is expecting another big increases in unit shipments which is normal taking in consideration its the third generation.

Also its not 2.5 million dollars, it's units sold at above 1000$ each so we are talking about billions of dollars in revenue. And this is revenue generated by a new category of product that didn't exist 3 years ago.

Actually this remark of yours is nonsense.

These devices are thick, gimmicky, have obvious design flaws and are designed for the first kid on the block with one to show off.

So you are just complaining for the sake of complaining. Got it.
Anyway I still didn't at least get an idea of how would Apple make a better foldable. I suppose right from the start Apple's foldable smartphones won't be designed "for the first kid on the block with one to show off". LoL

Nope, I didn't.

Yeah, right, they didn't recoup the money the spent on development, that's why they didn't put out new versions...

I'm on my second foldable as soon as the new one comes in and it'll be replacing my iphone as my primary phone.

Maybe not by today's standards. At the time an average Smartphone would set you back less than $150-$200 with contract and maybe $300-$350 without. And most people had voice only phones so more in the $25-$50 range or "free" with contract. So Apple coming along and asking $500-$600 ($655-$786 adjusted for inflation) was crazy expensive. Especially for a "smart phone" with no keyboard, no apps or even basic copy & paste functionality. And without the subsidies of a plan it was that much more absurdly expensive compared to the rest of the market at the time since hardly anyone had spent $100 out of pocket for a phone, let alone six times as much.

So yeah, entering the market at four or more times the price of every other smart phone on the market was SUPER expensive. Even more so when you consider a large part of the cell phone owning public had never paid directly out of pocket for a phone before at all thanks to the phone contracts of the time regularly including them for "free".
I hear you, but the Blackberry Pearl and Handspring Treo disagree with you.
