And I must ask - so what? You can start moving goalposts or talking about profit margins, etc. Doesn't change this report. At the end of the day ask yourself this question - Are you using the device that best suits your use case? If so - great. If not, consider buying something that does. Nothing else really matters. Samsung isn't going anywhere. Apple isn't going anywhere. Both have plenty to offer consumers.

This is important data to keep in mind when comparing unit sales.

If you can't see the difference between selling a $700 phone vs a $100 phone I can't help you.

Bottom line is Apple does not sell low end phones. So its pure stupidity to compare their unit sales vs a company that does.

I am not the OP, but wanted to answer the question as I was thinking this myself recently.

Samsung make some very good high end devices, it is ignorant and blinkered to think otherwise.

If you could use iOS on any other device in the way a Mac can run windows for example, how many people would change to non-Apple devices? I would give it serious consideration and that says a lot about Apple devices right now (not the OS). I am 8 years into an Eco-system with no release date in sight, so I am a captive consumer and doubt very much that I am the only one.

So, the answer for me is no, I do not think I am using the best device that suits, but I am using the best OS that does.

It's irrelevant to the news story and study.

Marketshare for Brand X vs Brand Y is just that. You can start slicing and dicing if you want. That doesn't make your study "smarter" - just different.

Feel free to conduct your own research and report back. That's not what this report was about. Just because you don't like the results or the method doesn't make it invalid.

Conversely - if Apple were proud of their numbers - why would they lump a few of their products into "other" and not break them out?

Apple and Samsung both present their #s in the most positive light.

I did conduct my own research.

Last year Samsung sold less than 75 million top end phones (GalaxyS and Note)
Last year Apple sold 231 million top end phones

Apple reports unit sold of Mac, iPhone, iPad, and iPod for YEARS.
They don't report unit sales on AppleWatch because they don't want to give the competition info about average selling price. Regardless AppleWatch only made about $4 billion in revenue last year. That's an immaterial amount compared to Apple's total revenue of $253 billion.

Bottom line is Apple reports unit sales on over 95% of their hardware sales. Samsung says ZERO about its unit sales on a regular basis. So stop acting like Samsung and Apple disclose the same amount of unit sales data.

Difference is tacky v class ;)

This is one of those cases, where they are so bloody rich, that they don't have a very concept of how rich they are, except "we are richer than you, so we're going to buy something very expensive, that you wish you could afford, and absolutely make it look like ass just cause we can and you can't"

irrelevant?

So I guess the take away from this study is that 'Other' is the king of brands. Idiotic.

Besides most market share studies split data by segment. You don't see a study comparing market share of BMW vs Kia. Or a study or Louis Vutton bags vs trash bags.

The study is purposely misleading to give the false impression that Samsung is dominating the smartphone market. Which is absolutely false.

Samsung just reported that their profits crashed, essentially they're selling nothing but low end phones and we got that kind of article... What the hell is that.

I'm sure Apple is happy to lose the race to making no money; they're all for that.

I have seen this trend in my area too. Most people are buying S6 because iPhones are way too common. Yes it's about being different, that's how Apple gained their loyal customers too, remember "Think Different" campaign?

In fact when I see an iPhone user, I imagine someone who is older and not teach savy, like a grandma or a teenager. Or some poor guy who drives a beat up Toyota Corolla and owns a pink iPhone 6S. I associate galaxy S6 with a guy in a suite that screams "style" and "sophistication"

Yeah nothing screams "style" & "sophisticated" more then a guy in a lovely 'suite'?! Please say it was a spelling mistake? That's like me saying when I see a Samsung phone I see someone who got a free phone from carphone warehouse because they were throwing in a free PS4 or quad bike with every contract. Are you that desperate to defend your android device that you have to post bull like "most people are buying S6" like it's an actual fact? Hey, everyone I've ever met (& it's got to be billions by now) owns an iPhone & sports an apple tattoo as everyone thinks apple is the greatest, it must be true because I'm saying it online...

Yes, nice deflection from my actual question of why Samsung don't report sales figure, when Apple does. Apple report quarter by quarter iPhone sale numbers. Show me Samsung sales figure please.

It's not an act. And What about Apple TV?

The units shipped vs sold argument is just old. It's tired. And again - meaningless/irrelevant to this news article. I'm glad you did your own research and found answers your looking for. Maybe you should get your work published.

Thanks . Personally, I'm tired of the repetition in this thread and every quarter/year these stats get reported.

I never brought up sold vs shipped.

Apple does not report AppleTV units because they are too small and insignificant to report. They sell a few million at $200. Apple won't report any hardware unless it has close to 5% of the total revenue of the company.

At this point AppleTV and Watch are not close to 5%. That is why they stop reporting iPod figures last year.

Once AppleWatch or AppleTV get $10-$15 billion in annual revenue they will report units sold by quarter.

Still waiting for you to supply comparative sales/activation figures. Thanks. You happy with that post, hope I didn't upset you too much with my question?

What exactly do you like about a Samsung phone hardware wise over an iPhone?

No Mantra. Risk Analysis. Just ensure you're diversified. :apple:

I still don't understand your comment.

You are telling people to sell Apple stock when its at historic lows (based on profits vs stock price).
This would have been much better advice last year when the stock was at $134 and near the top end of valuation based on profits vs stock price.

Huh? Don't you mean APPLE widens gap over SAMSUNG??? The chart shows that Samsung went from a 24.7% marketshare in 2014 to a 22.2% share in 2015. Meanwhile, Apple went from 15% in 2014 to 16.1% in 2015.

So, instead of MacRumors, is this MacBashers?

They are basing their headline on Q4-2015 vs Q4-2014 only.
Stupid comparison when a full year comparison is available.

Samsung makes cheap/almost free phones also.
One would need a breakout of S5,S6 and Note models for the comparison to be relavantt.

Exactly.

Samsung sold less than 70 million Galaxy/Note phones last year.
Apple sold 230 million iPhones last year.
