Face ID is just old Microsoft Kinect technology that Microsoft dumped.

Iris scanning came out before Face ID and also uses infrared scanning but with much better precision. I'm guessing Samsung are probably going to extend it to scan other minute facial features which should be immune to Fail ID.

And I suppose the fact that Apple actually managed to shrink it down so that it could fit into a phone is no big deal to you either?

"Want to talk about market share? Include Google Android along with as many Android forks as you can just to pad your numbers to make Android look better."

I'm sorry these are real things. You can't discount them because they make your numbers look bad.

True perhaps. But when you dig those numbers, we know who’s really winning the numbers game. Like...

Market share on the high-end bracket?
Overall Profit Share?
Sales per phone model/line?
User satisfaction rating?
App store/developer revenue?
Market Capitalization?
Etc....

Apple is killing, leading, and commanding the numbers despite the fact that...

Apple vs. 1500 Android Phone Manufacturers
iPhone vs. 5000+ Android Phone Models

Just be thankful that Apple is not tapping the middle and low-end market, and not opening iOS to other phone manufacturers.

I can't argue with truth; Apple makes more money off an iOS user then Google does an Android user. But when an iOS user is suddenly 10% of market share then 5% of market share who cares? You can have 100% of iOS users paying for apps but when they are 1% of the global app market no one cares. And Android goes on to world dominance.

If the iOS apps develops make the money they want, it won’t matter in the imagined future scenario of market share. $50 android phone users won’t spend like iOS users( at least that’s my thinking) and drive the developers off android toward iOS. Causing a shift in the market share.

Yes I can because of your previous claim that devs go where the market share is. They don’t. Which is why Android Apps are nowhere near as good as iOS Apps.

You’re quite the dreamer, aren’t you? Maybe if you hope and pray hard enough it will come true.

Android selling more and more low end junk doesn’t affect Apple. The iPhone and iOS user base continues to climb. App Store revenues (and developer revenues) also continue to climb. Market share doesn’t mean anything. Total revenues do. That’s where developers go. They’re clearly smart enough to see past the market share myth. And it is a myth.

Your basis for world dominance is futile at best, especially if 95% of all android handsets are crap. China has 1.4B population yet US at only 325M is economically dominant, Japan at 127M is technologically dominant, South Korea at just 51M is pop-culture dominant, and the list goes on. It’s not about quantity buddy. It’s QUALITY that dominates.

In context. Android has 86% market share, yet Apple at only 13% remains the world’s most valuable brand, the world’s most valuable company, the biggest IT company by revenue, has the highest brand loyalty, has the highest customer engagement, has the highest user satisfaction rating, so forth and so on.

Only 13% yet developers prefer the iOS platform and optimize their app for iOS, yet investors prefer to invest in Apple hence the highest market cap, yet users prefer to spend more with Apple than Android, yet advertisers prefer to use the iconic iPhone silhouette in reference to a phone.

Only 13% yet Apple’s presence in the yearly Mobile World Congress is strongly felt even if they are physically absent, yet Android manufacturers are copying the iPhoneX notch even if the Android Essential did it first, yet Google-owned Pixel phone eventually removed the headphone jack following iPhone, and Samsung is now preparing for a Face ID like feature, etc.

That, my friend, is world dominance, both in business and customer perspective. And oww, there are already 1.5B iOS users to date. So your idea of “no one cares” is non-sense.

Because if at only 13% no one really cares, why do Android phone makers keep on comparing and bashing Apple in their ads? Threatened much?!!

I agree with most of your post about iOS dominating, but the market share numbers are actually incorrect. Where they get them from is device sales every quarter (where Android is around 86% and the iPhone around 13%).

The problem with those numbers is we don't know how many of them are new users and how many are just buying a replacement phone for one they lost, quit working or as an upgrade. When you have an $800 iPhone or Galaxy you tend to keep that device for a few years (or pass it down to someone). If something breaks you'll get it repaired. Nobody wants to throw away an $800 device. When you buy a $50 disposable phone and have a problem you simply throw it out and get another one. Same thing if you upgrade to a newer phone.

Because of this a significant chunk of those Android sales don't represent new users. This is why Android smartphones have ridiculous sales numbers every year, but the subscriber base of active users doesn't increase at nearly the same rate. They're not adding 1.3 billion new users every year even though they sell 1.3 billion smartphones a year.

Apple is the biggest and most profitable company in the world and has 1.3B active users. MANY people care. No one cares about Android. It’s a footnote in Google’s earnings.

Serious question, have you ever wondered how much profit ford, BMW etc, or levis etc make? No? I didn' think so.. cant' we just be happy there's multiple companies making all manner of devices that we can enjoy and love. And learn the balance sheets to the accountants.
The last time face Id failed for me, I can assure you that the thought of their massive profits certainly didn' give me a warm fuzzy glow.,

In the face of fairness apple is a relatively small actual company.. number of staff is a good benchmark, and they are no where near the top. Google is the same . Share price doesn't mean large company.

If you’re a developer, aftermarket accessory manufacturer or service provider you can’t ignore the revenues.

- iOS users generate 5X the revenues vs Android for online shopping. If you run an online store, which platform are you going to concentrate on? Which platform will you offer promotions to? Which platform are you going to develop an App for and which one will you force to use your website?
- iOS users generate 4X the revenue (per user) and 2X the revenue overall vs Google Play. If your company is going to invest money on a new App, which platform are you most likely to concentrate on? If you do both, who gets it first?
- You’re an accessory maker that produces military grade phone cases. Are you going to make your $50 case to fit $50 phones? Or will you only make them for owners of $600+ phones. Pretty obvious choice here. You produce accessories for the users most likely to buy them.

To use your automobile analogy: Let’s say I manufacture forged racing wheels that cost $1,000 each. Do I waste time/money tooling up to make these wheels to fit a Kia? Or will I make them for the drivers most likely to buy them (BMW, Porsche....)? Pretty obvious choice here.

Yeah, I cant argue, Android is 90% of the app market and rising. iOS is less than 10% and falling; but "No one cares about Android. It’s a footnote in Google’s earnings"

Please.

Far too long a reply, I got bored reading it, but your answer completely missed my point, lets try again shall we. I talked about obsessing over a firms profits, no more no less. Nothing to do with how much they pay devs. Understand now?

When I talk about large companies, I am talking about profit and market capitalization, both of which Apple is #1.

Share price means nothing. Market cap means something.

It is. Google literally gives it away. iOS devices are rising...so are profits. No one cares about market share, except losers in the game of business.

You don't really think iOS share decreases because people switch to Android, do you?

Btw, Apple also owns the flagship "high end" market. Android can give away devices all it wants. Apple doesn't play the low margin game.

A lot of discussion in this thread has been about revenue for developers including the post you quoted that I replied to.

I just recently bought a Ford, and yes, I bother about their financial stats because it speaks volumes of how the company is doing. If people are continuously willing to spend and invest in something, it must be doing something really great.

And your sole basis for a “large” company is number of staff? Again, we don’t need the largest number to make the biggest impact and be the most dominant.

On a serious note, please tell me how many people exactly that 90% represents. Does it represent actual people using their devices, or just phones?

Apple’s 10% represents over 1.3B active iOS users. There are only 7.6B people in the world. If you do the math, 90% seems overblown.

Definitely. But that is something androiders won’t understand. Just let them gloat over their market share because it’s perhaps the only number that’s giving them a fighting chance.

Apple's profits means that it will continue to stay in business for a good long time to come, and continue to make the products that I so love to use. There is a reason why only Apple seems to be coming out with new features such as force touch and Face ID, or custom processors, or W1 chip and the like, because these sort of features require immense amounts of R&D. And only Apple has the resources to do this sort of stuff. The rest can only pump hardware specs and call it a day.

Plus, there is a certain satisfaction in proving all the haters and critics wrong year after year after year.

Profit-less market share is the only metric android phone users can use to show that they are anything but losing the smartphone race. I probably come across as a very arrogant Apple fanboy by saying this, but I am not seeing what Android has to show for its overwhelmingly larger market share.
