Thank you Samsung users for once again beta testing the technology that Apple will perfect and make available in a few years. ?

Yeah which is stupid too.
I suspect the 48 MP camera in the iPhone 14 Pro will be improved over the 12 MP camera in the iPhone 13 Pro, and that's what matters, regardless if you think it's stupid or not.

I also suspect the default output would be 12 MP, so the image size wouldn't even change much.

Technology marches on.

Depends what you mean by “improved”. Most of the ability in the 13 Pro is through computational photography. If you shoot in raw on it the output is garbage. I bought a new DSLR recently after realising the 13 Pro didn’t touch a 15 year old DSLR. Sensor pixels are too small already!

And Tim Apple appreciates your loyalty. Always easy to please a customer that never considers alternatives.
When there actually ARE alternatives I might consider them. Stealing designs and racing to be first to market with half-baked features doesn't fool me into thinking that is a viable alternative. And as long as the other options include treating my personal info as a commodity, it's a hard pass.

As I said. Tim Apple appreciates your blind loyalty.

Samsung is in the final stage of developing a 200-megapixel camera for use on its next-generation Galaxy S23 Ultra smartphone, which is expected to be announced in early 2023, according to South Korea's ETNews.

By comparison, the iPhone 13 Pro has a 12-megapixel main camera, but the iPhone 14 Pro is widely rumored to feature an upgraded 48-megapixel camera.

Like the Galaxy S22 Ultra, which has a 108-megapixel main camera, the S23 Ultra would likely use pixel binning, which merges data from multiple smaller pixels on the camera's image sensor into one "super pixel." Pixel binning is beneficial because simply increasing a smartphone camera's megapixels while maintaining the same image sensor size results in smaller pixels, which generally capture less light.

On the Galaxy S22 Ultra, the main camera shoots 12-megapixel photos by default, with a toggle available in the camera app for shooting 108-megapixel photos. The default setting is ideal for most users, as high-resolution photos can have very large file sizes.

iPhone 14 Pro models would likely utilize pixel binning as well. In a research note last year, tech analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said iPhone 14 Pro models may support both 48-megapixel and 12-megapixel output as a result. Kuo also said the 48-megapixel camera would enable iPhone 14 Pro models to support 8K video recording, up from 4K currently.

Cameras are good enough. Battery is more important for them. And GOS is not a feature.

PSA From a photographer: Megapixels mean next to nothing.
Nonsense. All camera manufacturers are increasing resolution of their sensors. If anything, the resolution is even more important for the phone cameras. Their sensors/pixels are small. They rely on computational photography to deal with it. There is a reason why Apple is following Samsung in this direction (with two...three year lag).

Are cameras the biggest selling point for high end phones? I feel like its the majority of what’s talked about for these devices.
Well, it's pretty much all that differentiates them tbh. I have an SE2, which is absolutely perfectly functional as a phone/messaging/browsing device. And I am seriously thinking of upgrading to a 13 Pro just for the better camera. As they say, the best camera for the job is the one you have with you. And there is very little else that differentiates the SE2 from the 13 Pro, apart from the prestige of the sexy top model, of course.

Yes. Unfortunately my buddy with a Pixel always gets the bragging rights and we have to source his pictures after family events. iPhone takes great pictures of static items or people outdoors.. 95% of what we do is indoor events in moderate lighting and Pixel really does a great job there.
Wow really? Are the low-light Pixel pics really that much better than a 13 Pro?

Too bad, it still won’t be as good quality as what iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max will offer.

The mistake Samsung is going to make… it’ll be launched after the iPhone 14.
it remains to be seen how good the 14 pro camera will be but at present the s22 ultra has a better camera than the 13 pro max. iPhone going to 48mp will certainly help with image quality but that will be more due to the new 1/1.3 sensor.

this s23 ultra 200mp could have an even bigger 1/1.2 inch sensor

A 48 MP sensor binned down to a 12 MP sensor will never produce as good an image as a native 12 MP sensor. There is always unused space between the pixels that don't absorb light.
that's simply false, the fact the iPhone is behind in photography a lot of it is down to only having 12mp options. pixel Binning will be a big step forward on the iPhone

This is not always true, but regardless, the other point to remember is when they upgrade the camera sensor to a super high resolution to take advantage of pixel binning, they often upgrade the sensor size too. I don't know about the Samsung, but the 48 MP sensor rumoured for the iPhone 14 Pro is supposed to be significantly larger than the 12 MP sensor in the iPhone 13 Pro.

BTW, it again is supposed to be a Sony part.
1/1.3 is the rumoured sensor for the 14 pro line

1/1.2 I believe for this sensor on the ultra could be 1/1.1 given the size

got to be the biggest myth ever that apple makes everything perfect after releasing it late. not sure why people believe this rubbish to be fair. They do make some things really good but others not so much.
