I just can't believe Samsung is getting rid of the headphone jack. I was nearly ready to abandon Apple for removing it.

I personally think the S8 is shaping up to be a nice phone with some big changes. Curious to see what how this plays out. Competition is needed and Samsung seems to be pushing.
I'm not sure if I would consider a race to the exact same conclusion good competition. It seems that Samsung mostly "pushes" others by simply racing to rumors first, whether they turn out true or not. Does this help anyone but Samsung and their share price? Are Samsung users benefiting from S-Pay, S-voice, non removable batteries/storage, waterproofing, glass screens, etc.?

We have double CPU speeds now, in the iPhone. Why doesn't that count as innovation?
"But almost nobody mentions that or cares about that because Samsung phones are about specs and not how they look like, while iPhones are defined to a significant degree by how they look like." - @manu chao

Because things were always better in the past.
Borrowed and re-purposed a snip of your post. No sense re-inventing the wheel.:)

Hopefully this won't blow up in Samsung's face.

Hopefully this decision doesn't blow up in their face.

Wouldn't want them to rush. People don't want their bezel-less screens catching fire or anything.

This should be an explosive launch for Samsung and their precarious deadlines.

All within 5 minutes of each other. Original and funny or  and :(? Gonna have to go with the emojis.:p:D

I don't pay attention to what other people post.

Must say something about Samsung if people are all saying the same thing. ;)

I'm more interested to see how the software integrates with the new design. An iPhone without a home button could materially change the UX.

They did it once before when the rumours for iPhone 6 with a curved glass display surfaced, but they misinterpreted the rumour, overcooked it and and put a gimmicky display in the curve of the glass too.

Well, no.

First off, the iPhone 6 curved glass rumor started in April 2014.

That rumor came over a year AFTER Samsung showed off this curved display prototype at the January 2013 Consumer Electronics Show:

The 2013 prototype's display curve excited CES visitors so much, that Samsung later released it as the Edge model. The original design had nothing to do with any much later iPhone rumors.

Not to mention that the later Apple rumor was reported like this:

--------------------------
Rumor: Apple's 'iPhone 6' may sport curved edges, display glass

Citing a "trusted source," Japanese blog Mac Otakara reports the so-called "iPhone 6" will sport "rounded" edges and a curved display glass much like the design seen on Samsung's Galaxy S III.

Yes, that's right. It was originally a rumor that in 2014 Apple would copy Samsung's 2012 design which had curved front glass two years prior.

Unless these things can run silky smooth and don't affect battery life - I really don't want unnecessary resolution bumps the eye cannot see. For a start off everything will look worse until developers re-release all their apps yet again with even higher resolution graphics, making the apps an even bigger download, all for a resolution we can't even see the difference in.

You obviously have no experience with VR. Apple has been dragging their feet in this regard but I've been using it with Samsung for a while. Even at a 2k screen the pixels are noticeable - I personally cannot wait until we see a 4k screen in a phone to improve that experience.

But even beyond VR, after you use a 2k OLED screen, the iphone screen looks lack luster and not as crisp when reading text IMO.

How about you rename this site iPhonerumors' and have a little subsection called 'Macrumors' shunted away on a back page somewhere which can be updated, say, once every couple of months or so... (Apple's fault, not yours)
They literally just released new MacBooks last month and have had countless articles about them.

Utter nonsense. And shame on those who upvoted it.

Fair enough - I didn't know about that.

They can try, but im sure it will be clear differences in the phone. Will they have the fingerprint reader in the display like apple supposedly will or will they just use a iris scanner. Will they keep the same wireless pad charging or allow for your phone to be charged away from the pad wirelessly as supposedly with apple. Really Apple has a chance to make a splash if they really improve on innovations Samsung already has. Samsung to me innovates for the hear and now and I feel like when apple does it it's more for longevity and they take more time to perfect so their features typically are better to me, but I guess we will see.

If they don't already, Apple should start making up rumours. Like a new colour wth polka dots or glitter, just to see what Samsung do.
I don't know why but this post made me burst out laughing. Goodness knows I've seen some iPhone cases with polka dots and glitter on Amazon. My daughter thought they were the greatest things when she was 8.

I actually don't think in this case Samsung is truly trying to copy Apple. At this point all the manufacturers seem to be moving in unison toward certain changes like removing the physical home button (already done by LG quite some time ago) and reducing bezels and removing the headphone jack (done first by Lenovo? I can't remember but somebody already beat Apple to that).

While I love my iPhones, I too feel that Apple is moving about with the needle too close to redline as well. I strongly think that Apple should announce their new models early, and test them in the wild for a long period of time, like they did with the original iPhone. It sure as hell got people interested in the phone, and likely helped avoid some problems. Likely would have resolved some of the problems they had with other products as well.

One thing in support of your idea, is that secrecy (to help with marketing) no longer seems to be a valid reason to withhold preview information... because nowadays we always seem to know everything ahead of time!

Heck, if anything, the early feedback from users could be used to tweak the presentation :)

I switched to an S7 Edge very recently, and while there are definitely some things I miss from IOS (messages app, find my friends, better email and calendar apps), I do get the ability to put in my own SD card to increase the storage, a standard USB port, better battery life and dare I say less of a chance they will drop the headphone socket. Overall I like it and the apps aren't so bad that I want to drop it and return straight to IOS, it's just different. If Samsung decide to drop a feature I like, there are plenty of other manufacturers making Android devices and often at very good prices - One Plus 3T anyone?

I can't see Apple stopping this obsession with light and thin until they've produced a phone that is only 1mm thick and has no physical buttons whatsoever. It will be an utter piece of crap, but they will have achieved 1mm. I just can't help thinking just because you can do something, doesn't mean to say you should do it.

For a period of time (short) Apple thrived off of such feedback, and tweaked models faster to help both he company, and give the user base a feeling of being important.

How things have flipped!!

Side note, I am wondering if we are in this type of a period with the AirPods. Hopefully they are withholding them more due to needed tweaks, as opposed to production issues.

This all assumes people will even care about Samsung by then. Given the absolute crapstorm caused by the removal of the headphone jack on the iPhone 7, and all the android users online who were flipping their lids about it, I don't expect such an Android-based device to sell very well. But then again those people also bought Galaxy devices without replaceable batteries and micro-SD card slots, so times are a changing. But when you factor in the exploding devices—that's a lot harder pill to swallow. Furthermore, have they even implemented a 3D Touch ripoff yet? Not sure how you jump straight from where they are now to not having any buttons at all. Apple has been slowly validating the tech to make it happen. But I suppose that helps them clone it faster.

What Apple were really working on was this:

And Samsung had produced a phone which looked like it had had a stroke.
