Looks good (as an obvious copy of Apple design) but a 4k display with Samsung's "smart" features is not a draw, unless there is no advertising in the operating system. Given how their TVs are, it's likely it will be full of ads and tracking. I keep my Samsung TV disconnected from any network because of the ads and tracking. Normally I don't care that much about "privacy" but Samsung smart TVs have so many ads that they are distracting. I guess I could block them with my PiHole but it's easier to keep the TV dumb and use an Apple TV instead.

FYI/FWIW: I used to allow our Samsung 'smart' TV on our network since we use a pihole.

But, the amount of calls was overwhelming to the point it on a regular basis meant I had to reboot the pihole - it was like as if the logs got clocked or something. Almost regular maintenance at some point. At last, since we hardly use the smart features I went into the service menu and disabled everything ethernet (wired as well as wi-fi). Haven't looked back since - so I'm with 100 % on this.

This seems just like a slightly upgraded samsung M7 (under 400$ monitor), with extra 300$ markup for the blunt copy-pasted apple studio.
Retail for Samsung M7 is US$500. Under $400 is the street price.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but AFAIK M7 doesn't include a camera.

Would be good with an IPS panel. VA at that screen size is going to be bad up close due to the viewing angles.

Since Samsung only makes smart-displays, I buy from a signage company. My 65in 4k for $700, 4k as 32in monitor for $320. The panels are probably Samsung or Lg, and they stay cool to the touch - i only need HDMI for aTV or Mac. 40W 32inch, 70W 65inch. Why buy sonething I don’t need, draws lots of power, heats the room.

studio display =250W - 100 for MBP = 150? I can run two mini M1 each with 4K display on that power budget, with FCPx rendering non-stop. Saw it on Sunday, gets quite warm.

Hopefully the colour reproduction is decent. Not a fan of Samsung's panels, they always just seem over saturated.

I have a Samsung 4K monitor and the color reproduction is fantastic. You can adjust your preference/style in the settings, there is indeed an “oversaturated” mode, but you can choose the one you like or even customize it.

12 pages of comments and just 3 users realising this is just a cheap VA panel in nice-looking package… Don’t people here know the basics about monitor tech? And compare this to ASD? (which I planned to buy but find it a bit too expensive for what it is)

Someone at Apple was definitely high when they decided to upsell height adjustment as a $400 optional extra on a $1600 monitor.
Honestly, the base model should've been $1200 and $1600 with the height adjustment. I know $400 does seem like a lot, but the height adjustment mechanism is very nice and very high quality. I was surprised when I was able to try it out in the Apple store. As someone who has the tilt model, I do feel like $400 is not an unreasonable ask for the height model. You really have to try it out to understand.

People say it's much more stable than the one for the 32" XDR, since it doesn't have to rotate.

Yeah, Samsung seems to overemphasize the use of VA for some reason.

Whatever one thinks of this offering..

Apple really should have made the Studio Display work as a standalone Apple TV or at least AirPlay target.
Hell - they have the hardware in there as it is!

Massive miss to not add that great flexibility and added functionality.
AirPlay requires WiFi, which the Studio Display doesn't have...but I agree, seems like it should have been a built-in feature.

I get that but who asked for 5K panels when the whole world revolves around 4k anyways ? For pros you have the ultra expensive pro display, so this one should be aimed at prosumers at best, consumers with mac minis looking to replace their LG.

As a consumer, i want the best bang for the buck (that often translates to more features, not the best features), and I'm not ready to spend a kidney for a few added benefits I didn't ask for.

Apple is becoming so good at recycling that it build new products around old products from other categories. Smart move for the company, poor result for the user.
Apple gets to design what they want and 5K has been their go to resolution since the first 5K iMac in 2014. Apple designing a 4K display because you think the whole world revolves around 4K isn’t something that is in Apple’s DNA. They have always sought to differentiate their offerings from the PC OEMs, who do the least amount of work necessary because the PC market is the lowest common denominator of computer design and engineering as it is based solely on cost of manufacturing to them.

Apple cannot compete and win and try to build a brand if it’s constantly racing to the bottom on every product it makes. Too many people on these forums simply buy based on cost alone, not even on value, and that’s their right. But it’s also Apple’s right to build what they think works best in their eyes. Whether you want to buy it or not is your choice, not your right.

If a $400 4K monitor gets the job done for you, good. If you are upset that Apple is not selling you a $400, $600 or even $800 4K monitor because you didn’t ask for certain features, well, that’s your problem, not Apple’s.

There are so many monitor manufacturers out there that you have a cornucopia of choices. If the PC OEMs, et al. don’t make the monitor you want, that’s not on Apple either.

Apple isn’t marketing the Studio Display to consumers or really even Prosumers. They’re marketing it first to potential Mac Studio buyers and MacBook Pro buyers. Whether Pros think the monitor is a good value or not remains to be seen, but Apple is not aiming this directly at your average consumer.

Man, they really should not be using knock-off furniture in their ads. The fake George Nelson Swag leg desk and fake Noguchi table. They should know their target audience for this can spot them.

Anything counterfeit stuff falls into the fake/knock-off trope.

I really wonder how this stacks up, my Samsung 28" second monitor is great.. but it looks a bit naff compared with my iMac 27".. and that looks a bit naff against my 14" MacBook Pro M1.

It’s crazy that this has better Apple connectivity than an Apple product as it supports Airplay for wireless connectivity.

What do you mean, using the monitor you will see ads like on a basic Kindle Reader?

... or those of us who bought one the original 22" LG Ultrafine and have been waiting to buy a second screen waiting, waiting, waiting for the imminent arrival of a new Apple screen. No I just have to wait, wait, wait for it to be available.

Well, since their target audience is clearly looking for cheap knock-offs to begin with, it does actually seem a pertinent choice, no?

The good news is if the interface is designed correctly*, you never have to deal with the Smart Features.

*I don't know if the interface is designed correctly or not.
Some smart TVS/monitors have decent UI design, but the vast majority force you to go into their interface or Home Screen (because that’s where the ads are displayed) before going to the input you want.

If it must be smart, all I care about is being able to push the power button and going straight to the input, but few offer this (because “cheap” smart devices subsidize their costs by collecting data and placing ads to make up on the backend).

Where did you get that?
source
Samsung hasn’t announced pricing yet for the new models, but for context, the 32-inch M7 was released at $399.99 while the 27-inch M5 was $229.99, so you can probably expect prices slightly above and below those two extremes.

And a few bucks included non integrated camera isn't wroth 300$ extra as well.
Look at the two specs. They are almost 1:1.
This is the same I expect as their 32" 4K panel of their 300$ S70A monitor as well (or almost the same) which is just not a smart monitor.
So I expect they mashed those two together, copied apple's design, and are selling a 400$ monitor for 700$.
