The 6s and 6s plus are going to be rare phones that everyone will want to get due having a standard headphone jack.
The truth is, MOST people simply don't care and it simply does not impact them. The majority of headphones sold now are wireless and not wired. I am amazed at the sheer number of people not understanding where the puck is going.

Of course this was coming. No phones will have 3.5mm jacks in 5 years.

Apple once again leads the way in dropping outdated technology to drag us into the future.

Whereas all the HiFi forums I read seem to raise serious reliability issues with Bluetooth audio devices....

Fact. Bluetooth does not deliver the same quality as a hard connection.
Fact. Bluetooth works fine in "sterile" environments, but place it in the middle of a city or apartment block and you'll start getting connectivity issues.

Not to mention all the battery issues. Have people forgotten batteries wear out, so the environmental impact will be huge. Not to mention consumer waste.

This was not done to make life better for you. It was made to make money from clueless consumers.

Quit using the term "Dongle" inappropriately. That is a slang-term for a device inserted into a port to satisfy DRM.

The proper term is "Adapter". A term that has been with us since the dawn of connectors of all types and in all industries.
It appears it can mean either:
Definition of dongle
  1. : a small device that plugs into a computer and serves as an adapter or as a security measure to enable the use of certain software

I wish apple had gone with the USB-C port on this iPhone. If they're trying to push USB-C on all their macs then why not make the most popular device in the world have it too??? It would be only the 3rd time they changed the connector on the phone and people could use the same headphones on both

Not being able to backup precious data (that isn't automatically backed up to iCloud daily) from your iPhone to the 2016 rMBP is quite frankly ludicrous.
God only knows what apple were thinking.

Of course Apple should have put a dongle or different lead in the box or dumped lightning for USB-C. (They did stick a headphone one in the iPhone box so I really don't get all the uproar over that.)

I bought two USB-A to USB-C connectors for £5 from Amazon. If you can't afford that you should not be buying a £700 phone or a £3000 laptop. There has always been a certain amount of pain in buying the latest and greatest from Apple and they've always been gouging b@stards! As long as we keep buying their stuff, they'll keep doing it. We are their bitches.

We can rip on Samsung all we want for copying Apple. But hey, at least they're using USB-C instead of stupid Lightning.

Apple has been one of the pioneers of USB-C implementation, yet they don't even want to use it in their mobile devices....It's SUCH a HUGE inconvenience!

Lightning was shipping in products two years before the USB-C spec was finalized. Lightning influenced the design of USB-C. Apple is using USB-C in other products, so they are not avoiding it wholesale based on religious dogma. Regarding continuing with Lightning in iOS devices instead of USB-C, it is likely to have caused an uproar either way, either people annoyed at the shift away from support of existing Lightning accessories versus those annoyed by not moving to the newer connector. Lightning still has some important advantages, and the advantages of USB-C are less clear on a small mobile device than on a laptop. Whatever your opinion of which should be used in iOS devices going forward, the Lightning connector is an amazing design.

Because next year, or the year after, when they drop ports completely from the iPhone and go to wireless charging, they will not have forced their installed user base of half-a-billion customers to switch to a new "standard" they won't even need a year later.

This isn't as bad as a move than Apple. Samsung is ditching an old wired peripheral with a new, universally accepted port: USB C. Even if you got a new Mac and this Samsung phone, you could share your headphones across devices, not to mention they'll be cheaper. Replacing the headphone jack with wireless is too soon, but replacing it with a new standard is a great transition that would also help push USB C even more

Reminds me of this article that came out when everyone was freaking out over Apple's announcement:

https://techcrunch.com/2016/09/07/d...phone-jack-is-over-smile-because-it-happened/

"So let it out. Let out the anger, the grief, the rage. Lie on the floor and do breathing exercises. And wait until CES when you’ll see enough wireless headphones to choke a blue whale and then watch as that other apex predator, Samsung, slowly but surely begins to remove its own headphone jacks because Apple, mean old Apple, finally said it was OK."

Nailed it. Samsung feels ok doing this now that Apple has borne the brunt of the public backlash. Mad respect for Apple.

Yes. Exactly this. They knew they would be removing all those ports from the coming MBP and it would have made their argument on it much stronger if only they followed their own edicts. Alas...proprietary headphones = $$$$$$

Just imagine the screams when they 'force' people to change from Lightning to USB-C.

people want a headphone jack

Not sure if you've heard, but there's this thing called wireless. It was invented in 1880, but maybe the news hasn't gotten out to everyone yet. As the name implies it allows transmitting data without the use of wires.

If you still prefer the 19th century technology, every iPhone includes a means to use wired headphones (and an adapter that allows you to use any headphone you currently own).

First of all the article is wrong stating you can not listen to music and charge at the same time with the S8. The S8 allows for wireless charging, so you can still listen to music while charging.

USB-C on everything makes sense. Hope it happens down the road.

As for Samsung, not surprised. Especially after the knee-jerk jet black S7.

Samsung won it's appeal against Apple in the Supreme Court today. They wont be paying Apple hundreds of millions.
