Everyone in the apple commercial is saying hello into a phone, ie the specific product genre. How'd you miss that?

I counted 31 phones in the apple commercial. What exactly makes a phone commercial about the "specific product genre" if not for phones??

How many smartphones did you count in the Apple commercial? Now how many wrist communicators in the Samsung commercial?

Show those two ads to someone, and stop just before the product / brand reveal.

1) I guarantee you that anyone watching the beginning of the Samsung ad can correctly guess that the product is wrist and phone related. The clips were specifically chosen for that connection.

2) Show the Apple ad and stop before the reveal, and no viewer would think that it was about a new smartphone. More likely, they might guess it was for a new phone service (mostly wired landline, considering the clips), or maybe a dating site since it emphasized "hello", or even about Turner Network Classics. The clips were not chosen to be about the product per se, but as an extension of Apple's old "hello" ads, with a phone related theme that only made sense once you saw the product.

That's the difference. Their similarity is only in the fact that they both used old clips.

Like I already said, if you want to make the ridiculous distinction between smartphones and phones as the difference between the commercials, then Samsung is most definitely not selling "wrist communicators" like those shown in the commercial.

Why all the hoopla about a BT controller that you wear on your wrist? It's not like it's actually a phone... (although watching this ad could lead you to that mistaken conclusion).

It is one thing to air that commercial during the Academy Awards, another to do it as a advert without a context.

Seriously, Samsung's products are decent, even creative, but have no soul and identity. I was watching a Samsung S4 review and my my goodness! Yes a lot of features but too many! 3-4 ways of answering a call, wave hand, swipe, etc. 3-4 ways to scroll videos. Tilting, waving, touch and hold and swipe...

Seriously, good design is not about having godzillion features. Most of the people who switched seriously just went for the bigger screen.

no, but because iOS is so unbelievable limited, it's not funny anymore. I've owned the original iPhone, 3GS, 4S and 5. I've lost my iPhone 5 (jailbroken iOS6, without jailbreak, iPhone's are no joy to use) and didn't get a replacement. I needed a capable smartphone for a good price, so I went with the Galaxy S3, which I bought for 350€ new. (at that point the 5 still cost about 500-600€ new, lol) Ever since I have not looked back to an iPhone, it's such a crippled feature set, really sad :(

using clips from B5, Flash Gordon, and Knight Rider, where do I sign up?

Seriously though, I would not mind a watch to display simple information my phone that I carry in my pocket has available to it. With BT head sets and such do I really need an item on my wrist that replicates all the functions of a smart phone?

Then again, if I can get good quality phone that doubles as a watch with some basic features (weather/traffic) I would not carry a smart phone. Unfortunately I am quite sure AT&T/Verizon would figure a way to charge me an arm and leg for it anyway

I hope to see samsuck lose a lot of money over this one. :)

Watch,

Apple will release theirs, it will be more conformed to the wrist, slightly curved, and it will incorporate a facetime camera!

Yeah, Samsung should've waited and done what everyone expected:

Although unlike some, I'm not against them trying out various things. At least it teaches them what NOT to do :)

Anyway, no Gear for me. Right now, I'm wondering if the EmoPulse Smile smartwatch money raising project can really come true.

It's a bit awkward looking, but at least it's got some thought put into the design and software. Anyone got more info on this? Is it real? For the proposed ~$500, I'd definitely try one out.

Then there's also Google, who no doubt is working on a Glass-like UI for their rumored smartwatch.

Big huge LOL to all these "Samsung steals" comments.

Clearly you have not been in youtube before. There one billion Hello clips before the iPhone add. It's old concept of cutting one sentence from movies and thats where apple "stole" it.

Samsung is just continuing that old concept and makes it A LOT better than just having repeated "hello" that is actually quite annoying. Samsung ad is funny.

Samsung - Apple 1-0

Deal with it!

With a title of 'paying homage to Early :apple: iPhone ads' MR are clearly fishing for comments (yup, got me also :p) but also giving Samsung way too much credit, in terms of comparing products or their impact. The iPhone was something groundbreaking - this piece of rubbish however is just downright laughable.

While Samsung is definitely great in developing hardware components, their Software department leaves a lot to be desired. Phones packed with all kinds of Software Gimmicks, but takes literally minutes to open a simple Gallery App (like the new Note 3) and now an Android watch, which can't connect to 99.9% of Android phones and can't read GMail? LMAO.

I am glad, that Apple has't released anything. Especially just for the sake of releasing it, like Samsung. It seems the technology is not there yet, to offer something useful in that regard. But hey, they beat Apple or Google in the SmartWatch 'race'. Unfortunately there is nothing really smart about this one-day-battery-wonder.

And boy, is that UI ugly as heck.

But for sure it will score phenomenally on Geekbench :D

Samsung built a smartwatch but forgot to make it do stuff.

That looks kinda cool, but is it made for single people? Or spouses that don't cuddle at night? I hope my soon to be wife doesn't mind an accidental smartphone to the face at night.

Samsung - Apple 1-0

Hahahaha... oh wait, you're actually serious?

Ugh, a blind man could tell this watch was rushed to market. That old saying "you can't polish a turd" comes to mind here.

Samsung, what are you doing?

Compliment = UK English

Complement = US English

Both are correct

I could be wrong but I believe compliment is to say something nice about someone while complement enhances something (e.g. That bracelet complements her dress).

I don't think it's a UK or US thing, as far as I know.

But you have to hand to Samsung...

They did come out with a the 'iwatch' first. In addition, their TV interface seems to be very interesting. It surprises me that, Apple, who, leads and rarely follows will, with the watch and TV, in fact, be following.

I have no use for a smart watch (Apple, Samsung or any other provider's) as I HATE anything on my wrist, but the TV interface is compelling. The ability to use hand gestures and voice is what I have been looking for for years. So, like I said, you have to hand it to Samsung on these two fronts....and, hell, they, to the best of my knowledge didn't steal this technology from anyone!

My prediction on the TV front is that Apple will use a Siri-based interface, with two models of TV (HD and 4K...kind of like Samsung) along with enhanced content from the cable providers IF Apple can present a partnership model that doesn't threaten the cable providers who are extremely leery of Apple and their control of the music industry: if they can do it with music, Apple will sure as hell try to do the same with video content, if they can get away with it.

Why should one answer the watch (so unnatural and sure with lot of background noise) and not using a Bluetooth Headset?

Exactly, my own gut sense is that this whole iwatch thing comes from our familiarity and comfort with the watch form factor. Why anyone would want to talk into their hand while walking down the street instead of using a hands free head-set is beyond me.

So, where is the homage?

I don't see it either. Obvious plagiarism is one thing, looking for similarities where there is none is a tad fanboyish.. Anyway, the entire "smart watch" concept is kinda stupid imo...

Different strokes for different folks.

Wait a minute, if you stopped the Apple ad before it showed the iPhone, no one would have guessed the ad is phone related? Hmmm...

The Samsung ad gives the impression that you get a gadget that you put on your wrist that is able to do everything shown in the ad on its own. Not a good impression to give to people. "You mean I just spent $300 on a device which also requires me to spend another several hundred dollars on a Samsung phone and purchase a cell phone plan as well".

Considering the quality of the product or lack there of, it is more like:

Samsung 0

People would probably guess it was phone related...but that's very broad. For all they know, a bunch of people saying hello into a phone could have been an AT&T ad for their phone service.

pay homage to the first ads from another revolutionary device: the iPhone.

Did you guys forget that the iPhone ad "payed homage" to an independent artist?

http://adland.tv/adnews/apple-hello-iphone-ad-rip/1175263800

So in fact, Samsung didn't pay homage to Apple at all. It's kind of like that one South Park episode... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simpsons_Already_Did_It

Though it's probably too late to bring it up and the Apple fanboys will scoff at this anyway. So I doubt the writers here will amend the article however much I wish you guys would.

Complement not compliment

Using "compliment" when "complement" should be used is as annoying as when "your" is used improperly instead of "you're"

But not as annoying as when people point out the mistakes of others who get paid to write.
