I agree. I found it kind of tedious. It picked up at the end. But I felt like they spliced together every clip they could find of a smart watch. Or wrist phone. Or whatever. The idea was that somehow the new product is somehow like these old sci-fi ideas... literally.

The iPhone ad was quite different in spirit. It was really about the word "hello" and other, synonymous phone greetings. It's how Apple has introduced products before, starting with the Mac-- a friendly greeting, here in the context of a phone call. So the ad was really saying this was a phone, but not much else about it, except that it was the kind of friendly, comfortable device you could expect from Apple. Not sci-fi at all.

So what you're saying is - this commercial is nothing like the Apple one except for the fact that it uses pop culture clips.

Interesting given the screaming going on in this thread ;)

Let's put the watch aside for the moment.

I just watched both commercials. I can't figure out why the brouhaha over it. It's not a copycat ad. As if Apple was the first to do a montage of tv/movie clips.

Wow. Just wow.

Personally I like this one better anyway

Actually that Star Trek quote was from Star Trek III Search for Spock, not Star Trek I The Motion Picture where they used the 'watches'. Just before Kirk decides to activate the self distruct sequence.

For those saying 'copy copy' - you definitely need to see this video artwork from Cristian Marclay who created a similar idea 12 years earlier!

Oh good. I was about to post about Marclay and Apple. Yes, he did a seven minute movie using telephones back in 1995. Here's a tiny excerpt:

TV's aside, it has nothing to do with "teams". It's the brazen copying, lying and hypocrisy. Folks don't like it when someone cheats...plain and simple.

Well, hypocrisy is definitely the theme in this thread.

Back when the iPhone "hello" ad came out, a lot of people noticed the similarity between it and Christian Marclay's "Telephones" piece as noted above.

Here is what Marclay said about Apple's rip-off of his piece:

Apple contacted Marclay, he says, to get permission to use the concept for a new iPhone ad that debuted during the Oscars.

He refused. They took the idea anyway.

The way they dealt with the whole thing is pretty sleazy,” Marclay says. He talked to a lawyer about taking legal action over the ripoff, but was told “there’s nothing I can do about it. They have the right to get inspired.”

Contemporary art, of course, is often about appropriation and recontextualizing material, but the brazenness of Apple’s move is disappointing. Still, Marclay isn’t keen on going to court.

“This culture’s so much about suing each other that if we want to have anything that’s more of an open exchange of ideas, one has to stop this mentality. I’m just honored that they thought my work was interesting enough that they felt they could just rip it off.”

- Marclay's new iPhone ad?

Lesson for today: everyone gets "inspired" from somewhere else.

Samsung "paying homage" to Apple again eh ;) (hey, I'm a Samsung phone user, but I do know they uh "pay homage" quite frequently)

Nice vid, but needs more Blake's 7.

Ummm...

No matter how good the commercial is or isn't, that "smart" wrist watch is still ugly as crap and from the reviews I've seen online, appears to be equally buggy/glitchy.

When Samsung is the "first to market" it's about like me going on a discussion thread and just posting "first in!". They put practically no thought into it. What a shame.

Right now I think the smart watch has limited appeal, with crappy battery life and a screen you can't do much with. Wait until someone releases a model with a holographic projector and much better battery life. I think the Google glass is a much more useful piece of tech.

Lesson for today: everyone gets "inspired" from somewhere else.

The real question is why are Samsung fans so hesitant to admit that everyone gets inspired from somewhere else? You've got people in this thread saying there is no similarity between the two commercials. Really?

Samsung clearly was inspired by marclay (which I didn't even know about but obviously apple was inspired by) or apple so why pretend you don't see the "inspiration"?

Lesson for today: everyone gets "inspired" from somewhere else.

This is correct. And no one is arguing that Apple hasn't gotten Inspiration from other sources. As you say... everyone does. But the thing that is a bit (insert adjective here... e.g. humorous, annoying, sad, complimentary etc.) is that Samsung seems to get MOST of their "Inspiration" from Apple. ;)

Samsung

Innovation, Design and now Advert Concept thieving. It’s not a stretch to think ALL of their technology must also be stolen then re-packaged. They are simply master counterfeiters, imitating real market products then re-branding their name on it. I foresee a future ban on Samsung products when too much is fiannly too much and the last straw.

Why is this commercial an inspiration from Apple and not the original? That's a good question too, right?

It's almost like saying that 10 Things I Hate About You was inspired/copied from the musical Kiss Me Kate instead of saying it was inspired by Shakespeare...

I never said it was inspired from Apple. Hell, all their stuff just might be inspired from someone else. The watch, the tablets, the phones, the notebooks... I said it "SEEMS" that their inspiration comes from Apple. Who knows.. maybe they are just copying Apple's inspiration and not their products.

:D I've just got to say, you've really outdone yourself in this thread. Fantastic!

**slow clap**

LOL!! Nice post to end my day with! See you guys tomorrow.

It's funny seeing all the Apple fanboys here. I use Apple products, I have an iPhone, a Macbook, and an iPad but I don't hate on Samsung like you guys do. I'm not sure if you guys know this but people's reaction to the first iPhone wasn't so warm either. Back then, Blackberry and Nokia (Kings and queens of the smartphone market) laughed at their feeble attempt to try to gain market share. Now, they're nowhere to be found and Apple and Samsung are ruling the cellphone market.

THIS IS A HOMAGE TO THE FIRST IPHONE COMMERCIAL.

It was designed to be a starting point to a technological revolution -- just like the iPhone did back then. The only reason why fanboys are fanboys is because they think that the iPhone is being threatened and is now the underdog. That's also why there are Android fanboys -- for the longest time, it was an underdog and people generally cheer for the underdog.

You don't see a shampoo commercial and say that "OHHH!!! They copied that other shampoo commercial by showing the flowy hair!" It's marketing, guys. It's even the point of the ad, sometimes, to either make fun of or pay homage to another ad.

this would have been a lot better post if there were 2 shampoo commercials with it, wouldn't it? #sarcasm

My understanding however is that the M7 is an Apple Design? Am I correct?

The "M7" (named to go with the A7) is actually labeled as an NXP LPC18A1.

It's a made-to-order version of an NXP(*) LPC1800 series, which is an MCU that already comes in about 40 different pre-designed variations... each with various amounts of Flash, RAM and types of I/O.

m7_lpc1800.png

Apple would've asked NXP to include the particular I/O blocks that they wanted, and NXP would then have designed and produced it.

In this case, the blocks would've been in part determined by what the sensors needed. Let's look.

  • The 5S uses an AK8963 compass chip. Looking at its specs, we see that it requires either an I2C or SPI interface.

  • The STMicroelectronics gyroscope L3G4200DH has the same interface choices.

  • The Bosch Sensortec accelerometer BMA220 ... checking... yep, ditto.

So Apple needed at least three I2C and/or SPI ports on the "M7" to talk to those sensors.

(*) NXP used to be Philips Semiconductor

Patent Revoked

Well they just showed previous art about ten different times - there go their patents.

Jeez Samsung... This is a stealing spree... They copied all of those????

The Apple Ad
KIT
Star Trek
Flinstones
Inspector Gadget
Jetsons
Dick Tracy
Smurfs
Teletubbies
My aunt Jessica
My dog Sparky

Oh my god... can't they think of anything original???? :p

Errrrmm, you have watched that 2007 iphone add haven't you? So its ok for apple to copy, but no-one else?

I have been following the smart watch area with a lot of interest. First, I stopped wearing a watch a long time ago and have zero interest in putting one back one.

However, I would be interested in a device that I could wear on my wrist that did the following:

Discretely notified me of incoming messages, email and alerts.
Could track my movements during exercise
Could measure my pulse
Could check my blood glucose (I'm diabetic)
Could measure and track other health related things (maybe even body temperature)
Could provide location specific information through push notification
And if it displays time, I don't mind that

What I do not want to do with my "watch"

Answer phone calls
Enter text in any way (reply to text, etc.)
Watch tiny movies
Listen to music

If Apple only makes an iPod on a wrist band, I'm not at all interested. But there are enough indications that they are planning on integrating biometric sensors that I am cautiously optimistic that it will do some of the things I want.

Samsung is only doing the stuff that I don't want or that my phone does a much better job of.

Classic!

Wow! Samsung has no identity!... I can't wait until Samsung's CEO starts making presentations while wearing a black turtleneck, jeans, and sneakers.

I do find it funny that now the marclay commercial is the inspiration whereas earlier they were completely different lol.

It's funny that it matters at all. The only similarity between Apple and Samsung's ad is the use of pop culture and the fact it's advertising "new" technology. One's a phone. One's a smartwatch.

The only time I panic and want a watch is when my phone dies and I can't tell what time it is...

I'm still seeing this as a non category until there is something that really can't be done by any other device, it's not good enough being an extension of my phone ever.

I think apple is throwing designs but no products. This is making Samsung enter the market to avoid being called a copycat but there will never be an apple watch.

You only have to look at the watches that do sell and their extortionate price tags, these are not in need of an overhaul they are the reserve of old people and people with more money than sense who place importance in the price of your timepiece not its functions.

Like google glass, a watch is a crippled iPhone and apple avoids those items, it needs it's own purpose.

The "only"similarities you mentioned are essentially the entire commercial.
