This is an odd assertion. There are only two companies that make truly premium display panels and Apple is definitely not one of them. LG & Samsung are the only companies capable of actually producing these displays and are in fact the OEM's for both the Studio and more expensive XDR.

The sub-components (like panels) do not make the Product.

When Apple was still sharing Intel chips with other PCs... were Apple computer still not the most premium in the market for overall performance and satisfaction?

Good. I'm selling my Apple Studio Display and buy this Samsung monitor instead. The Samsung monitor should be out of this world considering how everybody hates the Apple Studio Display.

It should be a huge upgrade over the Apple Studio Display right?

Most of the people that hate the studio display never tried it personally and just join the hate train. You can tell when some say a 4k monitor for 300 bucks is just as good. It is so ludicrous that it isn’t even worth responding to.

I own an ASD and love it. Fantastic display.

60Hz, so no.
Not even the current-gen game consoles have AAA games running at 120Hz at 4k...* so 60Hz is adequate for 4k gaming. However, 120Hz would indeed be more than welcome for scrolling text / webpages etc. This is why I've purchased a 4k144 gaming monitor for my 2021 MBP 16".

*: the ones that do are generally independent and/or cartoon-like (read: far fewer polygons) ones. Games with tons of polygons are 60 Hz "only".

I have Viewfinity S8 4K.. which is the higher end "professional" version of the M8. It's crap.

  • They removed the speaker from the M8, but monitor is not any thinner or smaller.
  • The stand and articulation is flimsy.
  • The supposedly 90W USB-C delivers 65W to a laptop... if at all. (various laptops have trouble detecting that it's even being charged).
  • The other USB-A ports do not provide pass-through USB charging. Why not ? The monitor is always connected to power supply.
Last few days, damn thing even refuses to get video signal from my work Dell laptop (also crap product on its own).

Samsung and Dell... would never wish these products on my worst enemies.
Yup... I gave the M8 a shot and sent it back after about a week. Cheap, flimsy and no matter what I did, I couldn't calibrate it to even remotely resemble my MacBook or my Apple Cinema Display. I gave it a try because it was 32"(27" is too small for me), looked decent(resembles an iMac) and because I wasn't willing(although I'm a lot closer now) to spend the kind of money that the XDR costs.

It should be AT LEAST 20 to 30% of the exorbitant price of apple studio display, considering it tries to be the same, and it is from Samsung, a company built over offering the minimum market acceptable quality (and sometimes below). Thanks god we have apple, so companies are constantly FORCED or pushed to step up to a certain degree of quality (retina, decent LCD panels, >99% RGB colors, decent speakers, and so on...)

PS: With just 5 months, my girfriend's Galaxy Flip 4 just lost touch on the LCD due to the folding part. When she went after Samsung's Brazil they recognized the issue, but refuse to fix it through the warranty just because she bought it on Spain (directly from Samsung!). To have it fixed she would have to send back to Spain and inquiry warranty there.

Guess what? Even tough she sent it back to Spain, at the same time she bought a new Iphone and just went back to Apple. She will sell the Flip after repair. And said she'll never leave the brand again as she is complete sorry.

Me? I recently bought a Studio Display (vesa) and I'm looking forward to buy another one. The price is ridiculous but there's no better display for the macos. You need to get it to appreciate it's value. Reviews and specs doesn't do justice on that case. 4K will never work with MACOS due to removal of subpixel rendering...

I would NEVER consider paying the SAME for a similar product from Samsung. In my opinion they are always steps below Apple. And I don't say that as a fanboy, I say as a customer who compares quality, service and software.

Apple did a public service stepping up quality and specs on products... Remember when devices sucks? mobiles doesn't sync with anything? ****** screens? Decent lenovo's/ibm's notebooks but with ****** LCD's?? Nowadays if a vendor sell something ****** like that they are out of the market, or steps down..

Thanks Apple. Thanks Steve.

As a long-time Apple fan, I would prefer to buy an Apple product (and appreciate the Apple design language). However, the Apple Studio Display sits too high, and even if you buy the height adjustable option, it only goes UPWARDS (can't go down) - which is ridiculous. Then, the Samsung also does portrait mode (which is pretty cool), and has the much better matte display as standard ... so Samsung are coming out ahead on almost front (other perhaps than Apple having the web cam built in). Competition is good, and maybe Apple will get it right on v2.

Got tired of waiting and concerned about Samsung's quality. Couldn't bring myself to pay for the Studio Display or LG Ultrafine 5K given that they are based on 5+ yo tech and need a KVM to use with a second computer. Found a spreadsheet that estimated what resolution I could actually see given my viewing distance and eyesight. Decided a 4K 27" display would be just fine for me. Paid $570+tax for a Dell U2723QE. It looks great and has a good selection of ports. Downsides: I'm going to end up using desk space for speakers and I need a new web cam with better low-light performance than the old 720p Creative Live cam I had in my drawer. I'm thinking Continuity Camera is the way to go. I am not bothered at all by the plastic case materials. I don't really see them when I'm using it and my desk is against the wall so I'm not cringing and shaking in anguish when I'm reminded that it's not Apple aluminum.

and yet 5 posts above yours "no glossy, not buying". lol.

For my workflow, I have never used a web cam. Not once. The exact amount of times I have used a SD card reader. Zero. Rotated my display... zero.

And of course, several peeps will come back and say they spend 10 hours a day zooming, used the SD card slot 1000 times a day and have 3 screens all in porttrait mode. ha.

Be like eas. buy what you want/need/budget for and be happy. =)

What devices are you wirelessly connecting to the display? If they can wirelessly connect to the display I would think that would be over AirPlay already - so you could just AirPlay them to the other screen where you want to see them? I'm trying to understand this use case. Are you talking about daisy chaining screens via AirPlay, or AirPlaying to multiple screens simultaneously?

I can AirPlay my phone or ipad to the Studio Display and it works very well. I can AirPlay my Studio Display to my iPad, which also works very well. All three devices can AirPlay to my AppleTV in my living room with no issues. But not many to one, and not one to many. Only one to one works.
Really? You can stream to the Studio display from you iPad or phone? I had no idea.

This is interesting, did you try it at your desk and return it due to that or are you just guessing off the specs?

Because I own the ASD and have it side by side with an LG 27GP950. The LG at its lowest height has the top of the visible screen basically identical to the ASD top of the visible screen at the default height.

So now I wonder if that LG would also sit too high for you. I always found that LG to be a standard monitor in terms of height.

Basically with them both at the lowest height setting, the only difference is the bezel (including camera) of the ASD is about a half-inch max higher.

No, I want the feature to allow for content to be streamed wirelessly from a device to the display (without a separate device plugged into the display). I live in a small apartment and want a display that can be used for working at my desk (office work) and stream content like a smart TV. That way instead of having a display and a TV, I would have just the one. That is what the Samsung S9 does. I would think this feature is possible given the Apple Studio display has a built in processor.

You don't need to run games at 5k or 4k. You could run them at 2k and easily get 120Hz+ on AAA games. Of course this is moot with a Mac since there aren't many AAA games being made for it yet.

Buy the apple display. Its amazing and much better than 4K, even when comparing to an OLED TV panel from LG. Believe me the reviews doesnt do justice.

Im the one who went through the long and painful route… I’ve believed the damn haters and bought a 4K OLED display and even though it has a very nice panel it just sucked. Bad rendering because current macos have no subpixel rendering, eyes tearing, subpar integration, independently of the display quality…

Then sold and bought the apple display. Wow wow, surprisingly good panel, 5K, retina, Honestly I much prefer it over LG OLED, since it doesnt dynamic adjust backlight depending on the degree of white in the screen, Also doesnt flick and hurt your eyes… and LG OLED was running at 120hz!!

For those worried about height adjust, forget it.. just buy the vesa version and get your flavor of adjustment.

I replaced my lenovo l220x display, so I took it’s stand, which is pretty nice and plenty of adjustment and bolted straight to the apple display and voilá! Just make surepp the stand supports vesa 100.

Now Im looking forward to buy the second apple studio display!

Also, the display’s speakers and mic are top notch! Very convenient and useful!

I agree with you.
when i upgraded my workstation, for budget reasons and also because i wanted a 32" i had to opt for an LG 32" 4k UN880, which is fantastic for the 500 bucks it asks for, it comes standard with a gas adjustable arm, usb hub, power delivery, P3 95% and matte coating.
it's a great screen for what I paid, but I would have liked to get a studio display, because after trying it I fell in love with it. everything works much better and wonderfully. my lg is still a best buy, but the display studio is on another planet.

for $999 it would be ok. at that msrp, apple studio makes a lot more sense

The Samsung Viewfinity S9 sells for W1,490,000 (including 10% VAT and delivery) in Korea. Today's exchange rate is US$1.00 = W1322. Back out the VAT and the pre-sales tax price of this monitor is W1,354,545 (US$1025). That means this monitor already sells right around that US$999 mark in Korea and the US price will be headed there Real Soon Now™.

My guess is Black Friday sales will put Viewfinity S9 at US$799, 849 or 899 in the worst case this autumn. Save your pennies!

It might seem odd to some, but one of the most important features that I'm waiting to see confirmed is whether it will be possible to adjust screen brightness from a MBP. (One reviewer who received an early demo model said it was not possible, but I'm hopeful that perhaps a software update can enable this capability.) I use that feature with my LG 5k several times per day and I can't imagine needing to go back to fussing with an external remote or fiddly monitor buttons to adjust screen brightness.

That's a feature you only find on iMacs, Apple Displays, or monitors sold at the Apple Store.
On my Lg this function is not present, just as there is no true tone and automatic brightness adjustment.
I agree with you that it is an important feature.

I mean, that math is cool and all... but this article clear stated that "amazon pre order is $1599".

Not that Smasung (and many many others) discount things after introduction... but we are talking 50% off with your lowest prediction.

Dont get me wrong, hope it could happen... but seems a bit of a stretch.
