I was kinda hoping for more than just 4 years of steve approved products. I was thinking like ten.

I'm not hanging my hopes on anyone. I don't own Apple stock and consequently couldn't care less either way. Im just saying the entire product line in its current state and the next 1 or 2 revisions have all had input from Steve.

The decision to use a 4" screen on iP5...steve approved
The decision do to an iPad mini...steve approved
The iMacs and MBPr...steve approved.

Your post makes me think of my estranged cousins forcing my frail grandmother to change her will on her death bed in order to collect a greater share of inheritance.

Oh, how I hate my cousins.

We have had the ability to block mobile phones for years!! The telco blocks the imei number and it becomes a paperweight.

But only the telco you had it on. There's nothing to stop someone from taking a phone and selling it overseas etc. especially now that Verizon and Sprint have gsm in their models as well. And if its a Verizon its already unlocked.

That said, I don't want to see a kill switch in the phone hardware level because that makes it too easy to screw with someone. My boyfriend is in my account and I break up with him cause he's cheating, I could just report his precious iPhone stolen and turn it into a brick.

4 Years worth of fixed products? Not very Agile. I'm guessing that this is their answer when they want an excuse not to do something.
There are new features being brought in by competition you know.

The real headline of that article is that the DA is an idiot. First, he is presumptuous, saying: "if you make nice things that could be targeted by thieves, then you have to build in a law-enforcement wishlist of features." That's silly; has he told car companies to install tracking devices in all cars? .

Who is talking about a tracking system in cars or phones? I am sure you have heard of a VIN (vehicle identification number). It's this very thing that keeps me from stealing some guys keys at the gym and selling his ride as my own. Yes there are ways around it, but with phones these days I simply find it, sell it, and I'm done. I'm assuming "getting manufacturers on board" would equate to disabling the phone from being able to be used. In practice this would be very easy since every phone has an imei that the network sees when connecting to it. For all intents and purposes it would/could work the same ways as a VIN with autos. He'll, each device also has a unique serial that could be traced in the same way. The idea with this sort of thing is not to put a bunch of man hours in to find the physical location of the device and get it back. The idea is to render the unit unusable, thus greatly reducing the desire for theft.

The thing is though, for them to have been designed and spec'd out before his death, we're talking the best part of two years ago. Come another six months, if Apple release a 5S, they won't be doomed, but their competitors will definitely be head to head.

If Tim had anything about him, he'd scrap whatever is in the pipeline for the 5S and take a leap straight to the iPhone 6. At least in physical appearance. Though maybe that's just my own selfish expectation, as I'm due an upgrade this year and don't fancy buying a £800 phone where the coating scrapes off in my pocket, or a cheap plastic alternative.

I agree to an extent - it will be interesting to see what they come out with this year.

About the coating scraping off - on the black one, its really not as bad as people make out - just dont put other metal things in your pocket. On the white one, its pretty much the same as the last generation. They seem pretty well built to me.

Uh, if any giant company out there doesn't know what their going to be doing for the next four years they are in a ******** of trouble.

It's called a development pipeline, in some industries its as far as 50 years out, 4 years makes sense because it plots well to each generation breakthrough in certain technology roadmaps (screens, processors, etc.).

Who at Apple said 4 years of fixed products?

Sounds like Apple is feeling the disappointment of allot of customers under the new management. If you are listening Apple.. Don't give us the iphone 5S! Nobody was impressed with the design of the 5 nor are we looking to spend more money just for a better chip and camera lens. I am keeping my 4S and so are allot of people I know...

Why can't people speak for themselves now days?

For me, iPhone's 5 design was best iPhone design.

a way to make confidence in apple product lineup after steve passed away.
wonder what it will do with cook's ego.

The Wallet goes bye byes... Steve will have changed the way we purchase things with the next iPhone releasing thumb scanning for purchasing.

After this... we, the consumer, get a TV, yay!

And, out of respect to Steve, I do believe his last products will be near complete within the next 2 years. No one will be like Steve, and Apple will never be the same... but the products they make will always kickass with the environment/foundation that Steve laid down.

I can't wait for what is to come...

Steve Jobs didn't own a crystal ball. I'm sure a basic roadmap was laid out, but I would hope that the current management would adapt those designs to changing market conditions and competition. If they just release whatever Steve wanted for the next 4 years and don't take anything else into consideration during product planning I would say they have some pretty weak management.

They'll be fine as long as they remember Steve's last words of advice to Tim Cook when he became CEO:

"Never ask what I would do... Just do what's right."

Next thing we'll hear is that they are using a Ouija board to communicate and consult with Steve Jobs' spirit on product strategy. Come on. Even if Steve Jobs had plans ahead for four years, a lot changes in four years in technology. I would be surprised that Apple would blindly execute on any of those plans. Saying that I hope that the people at Apple continue their path of innovation and that we continue to see really great products (not just hyped up products) for years to come.

So this is all a big excuse from Apple like "Well we know that iphone 5s in comparison to GS4 sucks, but hey - it was developed under Steve Jobs so you should go buy it just for this reason! And it's also the only phone with retina display."

A lot can change in 4 generations of tech. Unless they got something mind blowing up their sleeves they had better start doing some fresh ideas
Hmm, I'm not really sure what you're implying ("start doing"? as if they aren't?), but it often takes about 3-4 years to get a brand new product (of the kind Apple deals with) or major revision like the iPhone 4s to 5 from conception to market.

So of course they are trying to come up with fresh ideas right now. Aimed for 2015+.

You don't turn around companies like these on a dime.

This is why a good strategy and vision means a lot! Steve Jobs had a very keen eye in this regard, so that he could have products pretty much ready for launch at just the right time, after having planned for it for several years along with his team. It's fascinating!
