License allows you to install software to more than one computer. Wasn't it five? Anyway, because of that I don't have to buy three separate licenses for my computers.

Thanks, J

I should look into that as I plan on getting at least 2 Macs.

Although I still find myself holding off to wait for a clean install of Leopard, rather than buying now and having to update later.... extra time and extra expense. (Maybe updating on a Mac isn't so problematic as Windows?)

In particular, I will need Parallels (unless Apple come out with a killer app which allows all Windows software to be run natively) and am anxious about how an update to Leopard MIGHT impact on that ... will I end up having to reinstal Parallels and all the application software again in both the Mac and Windows OS's.

If you're new to Macs, then why not buying one now and getting used to it? Clean install of Tiger gives you idea about what you're facing with Leopard later. At that time, there shouldn't be any trouble at all.

On the plus side the lack of any new MBP today does give more weight to the theory of a brand new style to be released with a big fanfare at WWDC :)

Well, this current style *is* rather oldish, dates back to 2003 –– but what would you change? It's really beautiful as it is. IF it's not broken, why fix it?

Mmmmmmmmmmmm, learning Tiger and then Leopard sounds like a hassle to me: just want a one step switch over from PCs to Macs. Know the changes from Tiger to Leopard won't be that huge, but all the same I feel like I've waited this long so waiting a few more months won't hurt too much. Besides, the oracle says don't buy now:

Yep, if MBP is what you're going to buy, then you're better off waiting for the update. But then it will be safe for another (at least) 6 months!

Honestly, unless there's a big upgrade to the GPU (or the new MBP has TurboMemory so OSX boots up in seconds), I think I would have been better off just buying a MBP back in January instead of agonizing myself waiting all this time...

I will also be disappointed if they're not putting in the LED screens. But because there's hope for that, I'm waiting... for now.

I've only heard rumours of 15 inch LCD screens...... but want a 17 inch.... or maybe a 15 inch will do with a separate screen when using the MBP as a desktop replacement.

What was missing in a MBP a year ago? Now that I'm waiting for the LED screens, it seems so irrelevant to expect superdrive speed bumb to 8x or double the VRAM size or slightly newer GPU version. Or minor CPU speed bump, or slighly faster FSB. Compared to the LED screen, anything else would have to be HUGE to get me excited.

The new backlighting is an interesting bonus I guess, but not something that would make me wait for a system. The GPU is low end, and the hard drive isn't user replaceable. The latter especially is deal breaker.

I hope so. I guess that's a positive way of looking at it. Problem is, I'm off next week so could easily accept delivery of a system if it were available. I've been expecting for months that I'd be able to finally order a system by now.

I'm guessing next week won't get an update either because Memorial day would throw off the Tuesday release. Lame.

And the usually dependable Dell isn't even getting anything out. (Although they have the added difficulty of nothing to put in their top end system...since no one actually makes hardware for a modern top end system right now.)

Man I just woke up. This really sucks. In a way though I suppose it's a good thing. Maybe it means that the update is big enough to make it into this years WWDC presentation.

No one hold me to this, but I have a hunch now. I'm thinking since they are going to be showing off Leopard at WWDC, that maybe the MacBook Pro could have such a significant update (like flash device) to boot up Leopard with incredible speed. Plus, Jobs did that announcement that gave Green Peace scream with excitement, I figure if they are updating to LED screens, that he would probably like to show those off too.

Again, THIS REALLY #*$&#*@ SUCKS!

hard drive isn't user replaceable

That would be huge, but it's not very hard to replace in the current design either. You just need a 00-size screwdriver, after which it's a piece of cake. Still, you're right, hard drive replacement without tools would be great!

I agree, it is still a stunning piece of minimal design; my old TiBook still looks better than a lot of lappys on the market today.

However, it is an aging design and as such more and more other high end laptops these days are appearing in silver... Immitation, as they say, is the sincerest form of flattery ;)

Added to which Jonathan Ives and his team have never been ones to rest on their laurels, so Icurious to see what they've got lined up to make us all go "WOW!" now...

Transparent Hoverbooks that hover at your desired height with 3D thin air screens like the viewscreen in Minority Report!

I should be amazed to see myself amazed if they really manage to "wow" us with the new design. Current form is so nice looking I'm actually guessing we'll be let down with the new one, whenever that may come. I'm actually hoping that the next revision still would look the same :)

Well, thinksecret was right about the tuesday launch of the MacBooks. I think they are most likely right about a MacBook Pro update coming at WWDC.

"ThinkSecret claims that Apple has indeed placed an order for 15.4-inch LED backlit displays targeting a June announcement at WWDC."

Oh well... just have to hold out. I was really hoping it would be today though.

That voids warranty though. It basically means that on the Macbook Pro you can't get warranty service if you care about data security (or are required to care). Meaning you're spending $2000-2800 on a laptop with no warranty. Scary prospect.

Even aside from that, I'm terrified of taking that thing apart. It looks like there's nothing left but the frame, and fitting it all back together would be worse. Heck, there are wires TAPED over the top of the hard drive.

I didn't realize Think Secret had pegged WWDC for the update. I know it's currently popular to bash Think Secret for who knows what reason, but obviously I wouldn't have thought today would be it if I'd know!

just called smalldog here in vermont, they are an apple reseller, and they only have 7 MBP physically in the store. I asked why only 7 (they usually have lots on hand) and he sounded like he couldn't find the right words, mostly hmmm and hawing. All custom configurations are on back-order.

I also hoped that today would be the day - now I just try to see the positive side and think that it will be an update at the WWDC and therefor it will be a good update if Steve is going to present it there. So better a good update a little bit late than a small one like the MacBooks last week early.
Try to not think about it any longer and set your minds to three weeks. Have a nice day - Christoph

I'm glad it wasn't today... more time gives us more hope that they implement all the technology in the new MBP's :)
Lot's of new non-apple announcements lately, especially with GPU's. And the fact that this will *seemingly* happen at WWDC means they would consider this an upgrade big enough for announcements at WWDC, even if it means more looking forward.

**note the frequent use of wishy-washy words in my post :p

Excuse my apparent lack of info on the latest news regarding Santa Rosa, but has any laptop manufacturer actually launched a Santa Rosa-based machine with the full set of promised features?

A majority of notebook makers have included the full feature set of Santa Rosa now, many specifying the Robson flash memory as well.

Doh. I was really hoping for/expecting the new MBP's today. I even bought a new backpack/sleeve for it. Oh well, I guess WWDC it is. A bit disappointing but, as someone mentioned before, it must be a decently significant update to warrant some talk at WWDC.

On another note, to echo the above poster, GO SOX!
