iPhone 3Gs - S for Speed
iPhone 4s - S for Siri
iPhone 5s - S for Security (Touch ID)
iphone 6s - S for Sapphire

Well, Apple has managed to associate the S every time! :D

Wonder what the 7s will be...
Slim. Ivys opus magnum - The 3mm thick iPhone 7S. (Disclaimer: 18 hours standby)

I'm pretty regular on these forums and I don't recall any screen scratch gate.
While I look forward to sapphire as much as the next, I'm happy to enjoy the 6 now & deal with the future when it arrives.

My main struggle is preordering 6 or 6+. Would really like to see/feel ahead of my preorder. Does not seem plausible tho. Hoping Apple return policies support a simple "oops, I'd rather have the other size" exchange option.

Has anyone started a 6 vs. 6+ preorder poll? I'd like to see where that chart nets out.

For this jumping in, happy preordering!

iPhone 6S it is.

So iphone 6 gets the same old gorilla glass 5s has? wow there isn't much of a difference between 5s and 6 besides nfc and size huh.

Well, there's the 25% increase in processing speed, the 50% increase in graphics speed, improved camera, better display, better motion coprocessor, 240fps slow motion video, improved FaceTime camera, better LTE radios, better/faster WiFi, barometer.

But other than that, yes. Exactly the same phone with NFC and a bigger screen...

Oh, don't you worry. I'm sure anyone who wants to upgrade their digitizer to Sapphire, then for a fee $100 Apple will upgrade your screen once available.

Lovely when you know what you miss in the next generation before you even placed your order for this generation when the target was missed by weeks.

Did Apple actually confirm that the S is for these various things every time?

S is always for speed.

Nice coincidence that major new features every other year start with S, but the one consistent feature of the S models has been improved speed.

Meh, I've never broken or scratched an iPhone screen, and I've owned all the major versions, so unless it's thinner and more clear, or less reflective, I don't really see the advantage unless you're hard on your devices.

i already feel bad for your new shiny iPhone 6.

Yeah, right...

"My prediction about sapphire screens wasn't wrong! It's just... they weren't ready yet! Yeah that's the ticket! It couldn't have anything to do with the fact that the sapphire production is just for the Apple watch... naaaaahhh.. couldn't be!"

Analysts are the GREATEST!!!

Probably that'll be the "killer feature" for next year's phone? Produce the sapphire steadily throughout this year, have the sapphire screens ready to go for the next iPhone and not have any (or less) supply constraints!
Name guess? 6S and 6S Plus? S standing for Sapphire! haha oh what have i become...

I am under the impression that GT's management knew about this last minute shift away from sapphire screens prior to the August 5th conference call and it may have resulted in lower guidance for 2014 by $100m

Looking back that should have been all the proof we needed.

Its a buzz word. Forum lurkers cling to buzz words. A sapphire display would not change their experience with the device 1 iota...but without it, its an excuse to bash the device, as if it now "lacks" something it was never going to have in the first place.

Like the guy on the first page that says, "Wow no sapphire? I guess its not much different at all is it? Just bigger?"

That's the kind of sheer genius you get here.

Yeah reading the comments on the first page wowed me. I was thinking the same thing, a sapphire screen doesn't really change the iPhone experience at all.

I'm not convinced sapphire screens are a big step up. Aren't they more brittle than gorilla glass?

The current displays are fine with me, so I can live with this one.

And the improved camera, and the barometer, and the updated processors.

When you subtract all the ways two things are different, they end up being remarkably similar.

Well, there's the 50% increase in processing speed, the 84% increase in graphics speed, improved camera, better display, better motion coprocessor, 240fps slow motion video, improved FaceTime camera, better LTE radios, better/faster WiFi, barometer.:

You are miss quoting those numbers, the 50 and 84 represents the number of TIMES faster the iPhone 6 is compared to the original iPhone. So it is 50x more CPU and 84x more GPU than the phone that came out in 2007.

The iPhone 6 has a 25% faster processor and 50% faster graphics than the iPhone 5S. Not nearly the 2x performance we have been used to seeing in the last few years, but still improving much faster than desktop/laptops. And these phones are already incredibly fast. Going from my iPhone 5 to this will be quite the nice upgrade.

I gotta say, I saw this coming. Makes me glad I'm on the 'S' cycle

Oh come on! You know they had to have SOMETHING killer for the S cycle! They always do. ;)

 :apple:

I think Mr. Margolis is trying to cover up his previous BS with new BS.

Exactly. It never made sense for physical, cost, or market volume reasons to put sapphire screens on iPhones. The screen should be optimized for drop resistance on an iPhone, and optimized for scratch resistance on an Apple Watch. That means Gorilla Glass for the iPhone, sapphire for the Apple Watch.

The analysts talking about sapphire on the iPhone were always just making it up. Anyone with some idea about artificial sapphire production, and the material science of the potential screen materials being talked about, knew it was complete nonsense from the start.

You're correct. Sorry. I had forgotten that.

Wouldn't sapphire be more brittle and prone to breakage? Are we taking all rumours as fact now?

There was nothing but rumours.

And people here are planning and making expectations / mountain out of mole hills / rumors.

iPhone 6+ now or stuck with everyday what ifs ... and remember, the game is changing and it starts with Apple Pay and iPhone 6.

I could afford an annual upgrade to keep up or be ahead of modern times as I can no longer use outdated technology then forever wonder because there is something better out there.

they didn't really need it this round. there was enough new to justify the 6 already. will be a nice upgrade next year. unfortunately my gtat stock took a terrible hit for it but i am long gtat anyway. gives me a chance to buy in more at a discount. atleast next year they will not have any supply constraints or last minute glitches.

wonder how it affected their asking prices though.
