They will no longer be making computers. Sorry.

lol not good value ones anyway, however we have known this for months, and infact i dont know why everyones getting hyped up about "shiller finally revealing the truth" because Steve said exactly this in a letter about 2 months ago.

Well Apple had to do something. The expectations were very high each year, but apple cant meet those expectations every year. Thats why they didnt demo Snow Leopard, there are no big new features. They will probably release Snow Leopard soon, as well as new Mac minis and iMacs to underline, that MW is not important any more..

of course all just speculation...

The iPhone was updated twice last year...once in Feb, then in July.

This gives me hope for a more recent update than June....maybe Feb or Mar?

If there going to release a new phone in July, I don' think they'd bother with an update as late as March - dates seem too close together.

Well that includes one HUGE tidbit: iPhone 3.0 will be out in June.

Cool and we'll get a new calculator and easier way to buy from iTunes. While we get zero OS and app feature parity from competitors. :p

As sad as I may be about the pending demise of MWSF, I cannot argue with Apple's logic for pulling out of the show.

The one thing I've always liked about Phil is that if you get him talking long enough, he's going to say things that Steve probably wouldn't say. If there were no Steve Jobs, Phil would be considered a fairly charismatic guy for a corporate keynote. I mean, compare him to Balmer.

I've never been to WWDC. Does it make any sense to try and combine MW with that show?

I agree, UNLESS it is a minor update like a 32GB version - e.g. only a memory bump.

I think the consensus out there has been that it's very unlikely that we will see a bump to 32GB in the next couple months - this would *probably* also require the iPod touch to be upgraded to 64GB as well, and IMHO that would not be feasible at the current $499 price point.

So where do the Computers list in this timeline???

My thought exactly!
It seems like a very odd situation when the core product of a company is not mentioned in this context.
I guess the Mini falls under the "wheneverish" banner

Phil just stated the obvious, but he had to.

So many folks run around making stuff up that once they truth is stated it sounds amazing. But anyone who's paid attention to the facts (and not just rumors) could have told you this exact same timeline.

My thought exactly!

The reason that computers aren't on there is that they come out whenever the new parts come out, year-round. There's not a single "computer season."

Apple is clearly making the iMac and Mini wait for something (probably processros, but it could be anything) before they upgrade them. Yet another reason why set shows are annoying to Apple.

yeah but updating a phone only once a year seems a bit infrequent.... for example the iphone 3g has been out over 6 months now and is still the same price... i'm so used to phones coming down in price so quickly it really puts me off buying one now, even if it's going to be another 6 months till the next one, and i think lots of people will think the same way.... i hope they update it before june!

the thing with the iPhone is that it isn't your typical Motorola or Nokia. Due to contract obligations, people will generally wait out a full two years before any sort of upgrade. furthermore, iPhone is constantly updated through updated firmware. flexibility of a touch screen based phone allows for the ability to significantly change the phone capabilities through software. there's no reason for apple to release 10 different iphone models and update them 5 times a year.

But it seems as if Mac is no longer the core part of Apple.

Just have a look at Phil's keynote.

Right in the beginning he says something along the lines of "oh and the Mac is a very important part of Apple" (or something pretty close to that). Not the but a.

Apple's core :)p) is no longer computers.

for all you people griping about not mentioning computers, what do you think when he says:

"He noted that Apple marches to certain annual product cycles: the holiday season (Novemberish), the educational buying season (late summer)"

So where do the Computers list in this timeline???

Exactly: where are the Macs in this configuration? When can we expect the next upgrades for the Mini, the iMac and the Pros now  :(?
Oops, looks like we all have the same reaction here.
Apple should definitely communicate more on future hardware releases, otherwise many people will give up and start to buy PC-stuff like media servers, alternative home computers, etc..

Hopefully that's not the only times they will be releasing computers this year, otherwise it's a long wait for iMac/Mac Mini/Mac Pro updates.

It always seemed Apple employees were worked to death, in time to release or announce products for Macworld, because at the end of every keynote, Steve would always ask people to heartily clap for the Apple development team.

Sounds like to me that they've decided to stick to this schedule, especially now with the ever-popular iPhone in their lineup.

June we'll probably see the 16 & 32 Gig iPhones, and the new 8 Gig iPhone Nano.

Fall we'll have desktop updates with the iMac, Pro, and Mini plus the start of "back to school" special to get rid of old iPods and Laptops for the iPod update in October and November laptop updates.

So where do the Computers list in this timeline???

Bingo! And more specifically where do professionals fit in this timeline? The mention of the education time could go toward consumer computers. As a pro I feel left out in the cold and we were the ones that kept Apple in business during those dark years. Remember the time when people would say "If your doing graphics you would want a Mac but for nothing else" - yes that was the pros keeping the company afloat - don't throw us off the boat!

Trade shows are just too expensive because of the unions.
They overcharge everything and you must use them to set up almost anything inside Moscone or any other convention center.

Apple stores are full everyday and Apple does not need the marketing and buzz generated by MW anymore. Sure I will miss it, but you do what you have to do.

So then everyone is happy with August and November for computer updates... Doesn't that sound horrible. I can live with August but you gotta do something in the spring.

So... when is the best time to be buy a Pro tower?! I really was looking forward to more Mac Pro upgrades because I'm on an 2002 Quicksilver G4!

I appreciate Phil giving another press release. I said the same thing a few days ago... not worth it for Apple, too much hype (people expecting Apple to come up with a ceasefire between Israel and Palestine - literally).

That said, I hope Macworld doesn't end nor moves over to CES. I would definitely go to the next one, whether Apple are there or not.

That will piss me off, I'm getting a new iMac in Feb w/ tax money, I was really hoping they'd release new ones at MWSF, even if I didn't get one of the new ones at least they would probably drop the price on the refurbished top of the line 24" iMac if new ones came out. I'm just hoping for some kind of event/release in late Jan. or early Feb. 'cause I know that money will be burning a hole in my pocket and I won't be able to keep myself from buying a new iMac even if they don't release new ones.

Time cycles are fine. Even being ready for Macworld isn't too much to ask.

I see that they are done with them. I can even live with that.

But even car makers are able to put out new cars during the events.

Can't a computer maker at least let us know that hey new computers are coming out (insert which ever month they want).

Now I know what most will say, but then they won't clear out the old when they unknowingly release the new ones. How will they make money. Simple lower the price. I know, I know. I am thinking outside the wheel.

(flame on)
