charging 2.5 times faster, data 10 times faster, unidirectional (no such thing as plugging in "upside down"), MagSafe, and smaller..?
Why not a "standard" connector? USB is a 4-pin standard, Mini-USB has 5 pins, but is 4 pins for all practical purposes. That's digital data +-, +5vdc, and ground. Both of those connectors are uni-directional (I'd define uni- as mating only one way, not both). The new connector is assumed to be bi-directional (mates two ways), something the non-techs will like even more than we will. The connector's form factor argues in favor of Mag Safe-style retention (quality of fit doesn't change over time, unlike Mini USB's friction fit).
8 pins… Just 8 pins...
The 30-pin dock connector has a lot of legacy pin-outs. 6 belong to Firewire - we know that sun has set. Will the new dock carry video (3 pins)? Why bother? Consider
https://www.macrumors.com/2012/08/28/apple-to-upgrade-airplay-with-wireless-streaming-without-wi-fi/ If multimedia i/o is solely digital, and predominantly Bluetooth/WiFi, less pins for Mother(board).
Hypothetical 8-pin pin-out: 1 for +5vdc, 1 for ground, 4 for Thunderbolt data (high-speed transmit +-, high-speed receive +-), 2 for USB data (some folks will still sync to iTunes). End of story.
Why is the headset jack adjacent to the new dock connector? Perhaps… Apple may ditch wired multimedia for wireless, but if the folks at iHome still need an analog audio out? A somewhat kludgy dock with a 3.5mm headset plug sticking up next to the new 8-pin all-digital dock connector.
