This is exactly what irritates me about the new design. The loss of the several hundred dollars in peripherals, cases and adapters I'll sustain due to needless redesigns. Going to have to think long and hard about whether to get an iPhone 4S or the new iPhone.

"Long and hard"

(I have to) : That's what she said!

For those who missed it.

So this is news?
Is there a reason why they didn't use mini USB since they decided to switch?

Because Micro USB is a flawed design. Just google the web and you will see so many problems with it. Apple does not want iPhones returning because of these known issues with Micro USB. They want a connector that will not cause problems for them going forward.

Can't understand the people moaning about it. Why on earth would anyone flip their hand around their phone 180 degrees just to put it in their pocket, and vice versa?

I don't - I also don't carry it upside down in my pocket. So there's that...

i wish theyd make it a magsafe connector that just snaps in like on a mac, that would be so amazingly perfect

Breaking news !!!!!

"Apple will still be making the iphone 4s for those who still love the old connecters, if your still not happy samsung make some nice apple knock offs” everyone wins

Apple spoiled us to the point we lost all sense of reality. This plug has been the same for a very, very long time.

Go check the rest of your electronics and see how many have been constant all these years.

Japanese mobile phones all had standard plugs, for different manufacturers, for as long as I remember (since at least 2004).

Micro USB is the new standard for smartphones; Apple are and will always be, the odd ones out.

Think Different ;)

Old news!!!!!

People who actually read posts realize that those who love the old connectors have already said they are considering purchasing the 4S instead of the new iPhone. Time will tell!

Look at the resemblance to micro usb, why not just make it micro usb

I personally really dislike micro usb. It doesn't feel secure when inserted into the device and so many of the devices have very weak ports that often get unseated after extensive usage. I even prefer the older 30 pin adapter over micro usb.

For me if this is something that can be inserted in either orientation smoothly, that's more than worth the trouble, especially if it's pin compatible with micro usb. You know there will be millions of these cables made by third party makers.

My concern is that Apple won't continue to offer the 4S in the larger memory sizes. If I ever have to replace my 4S, I want (and need) another 64GB model.

But if you have the jack at the bottom you have to have your phone upside down in your pocket. I don't like that.

With a headset plugged into this design, you should imagine holding the iPhone to make a call or use any other app.

It just makes sense.

I dont like the rumored redesign. However I do like the micro dock connector as it means that can squeeze in more guts, and please let this photo be accurate it regards to the new iPhone being wider and not only taller!

charging 2.5 times faster, data 10 times faster, unidirectional (no such thing as plugging in "upside down"), MagSafe, and smaller..?

Why not a "standard" connector? USB is a 4-pin standard, Mini-USB has 5 pins, but is 4 pins for all practical purposes. That's digital data +-, +5vdc, and ground. Both of those connectors are uni-directional (I'd define uni- as mating only one way, not both). The new connector is assumed to be bi-directional (mates two ways), something the non-techs will like even more than we will. The connector's form factor argues in favor of Mag Safe-style retention (quality of fit doesn't change over time, unlike Mini USB's friction fit).

8 pins… Just 8 pins...

The 30-pin dock connector has a lot of legacy pin-outs. 6 belong to Firewire - we know that sun has set. Will the new dock carry video (3 pins)? Why bother? Consider https://www.macrumors.com/2012/08/28/apple-to-upgrade-airplay-with-wireless-streaming-without-wi-fi/ If multimedia i/o is solely digital, and predominantly Bluetooth/WiFi, less pins for Mother(board).

Hypothetical 8-pin pin-out: 1 for +5vdc, 1 for ground, 4 for Thunderbolt data (high-speed transmit +-, high-speed receive +-), 2 for USB data (some folks will still sync to iTunes). End of story.

Why is the headset jack adjacent to the new dock connector? Perhaps… Apple may ditch wired multimedia for wireless, but if the folks at iHome still need an analog audio out? A somewhat kludgy dock with a 3.5mm headset plug sticking up next to the new 8-pin all-digital dock connector.

on a device as light as an iPhone I dont't think this woud work. The idea of magsafe is that if you trip over the cable, it will just pop out because the weight of the macbook is far too much to keep the magnet in place. Finding the right balance between the strength of the magnet vs the weight of the iPhone would probably be difficult. Having a magnetic cable for charging would be cool though, I agree with you there- but I don't think it would be "safe" in the sense that the magsafe cables are.

I can see the threads now. "I TRIPPED OVER THE CABLE AND THE PHONE FELL AND CRACKED- APPLE SHOULD BE SUED"

Actually Magsafe has another advantage: It's a zero-wear connector.

Any connector that uses friction will eventually wear out. Something that uses magnets to hold in place will last practically forever because it reduces sliding together.
