 That does it. My new iPhone is waiting at my home but if it scratches then I'm sending it back. ;)

1. This is an iPhone. I expect the outer casing to be made out of artificial diamond a la "The Diamond Age" by Neal Stephenson, nothing less.

2. I'm kidding about #1. Otterbox, here I come!

Hopefully my damn Zagg INVISIBLE SHIELD GETS HERE
ORDER THE 11TH

couldnt agree more, i ordered mine well over a week ago, i sure hope it's in the mail today or at the latest tomorrow, else the phone isnt leaving it's plush pillow

Only in the iPhone crowd will you see such intense debate over a scratch. Gotta love it.

If only I could love it. Too much mindshare over stupid scratches when there is oil gushing into the Gulf. I think US priorities are terribly messed up.

Looks to me that it was purposely keyed in the worse way to create those scratches. Under normal use I don't see this happening.

15 minutes of fame

It's amazing what people will do the get their 15 minutes of fame. A diamond will easily scratch even the hardest glass, metal, or whatever. Needing to catch the scratch using extreem lighting in fact shows how tough the glass really is.

Actually it won't, the metal in keys is softer than glass, try it on your old iPhone, you'll be surprised you can take a key to the screen and it wont scratch. You would either need an unreasonable amount of pressure, or a material harder than glass to scratch it. (Diamond, Quartz).

Good point. I have a 3GS and the back is scuffed up, but nothing out of normal wear and tear. I did get a screen scratch from something, it's small and had enough pressure to scratch the screen and gouge the side a bit. Keep in mind the only thing I do to 'protect' my phone is keep it in a pocket by itself and turn the glass towards my leg. That method has worked well for my 3GS and I expect it to work well for my 4G.

This is no surprise whatsoever. We can all thank Apple's insistence on placing an oleophobic coating over the glass surface. This coating scratches so easily it is ridiculous. They can make the glass as strong as they want, but if they keep insisting on coating it with this crap, it will show scratches. This is what happened with my iPad, which showed scratches after cleaning it with a microfiber towel and some iKlear one day. After that, I put a screen cover on it and never looked back. Apple said that this should not be easily scratched either (the iPad), yet it did. I can't wait to get my Wrapsol. :)

I presume these are the same people that leave the thick plastic wrapping on their sofa to stop it getting worn out.

It's a phone, use it. There's no point trying to keep it in a pristine state unless you're only interested in maintaining the resale value. In which case you're going to all that trouble for somebody else's benefit in a year or two.

I plan on keeping mine for a lot longer than that.

lol @ the apple defense league. thats pretty awful for 1 week of use, my original iphone lasted at least a year without a cause without a single scratch, what an awful new glorified plastic design, i think i might just but an original iphone again. since i just use the iphone for calls and music (which despite the 17 models and 5400 software updates worked fine on laucnh of the first generation device.

I always put phone in my pocket with keys. Not really a fan of man-purses or retarded holster clips. Planning on getting a bumper case and front and back glass protecting films from powersupport. I can't see treating a phone like a baby, I want to just throw it in my pocket and go. But I do think apple should make these a bit tougher like regular cell phones.

Actually, the Gulf oil is so distressing that we're just trying to distract ourselves for a few minutes so we don't all break down in tears.

I'm fine as long as I don't get nasty scratches on the screen.

No way I'm going to use any case for it. Kinda defeats the purpose of having a good looking phone. I'll rather have the scratches. The cases look even uglier.

I have my Zagg shield sitting right here... If only fedex would show up with my phone!

Hmmm

ENGADGET is posting this?!?! I can't imagine it has anything to do with Apple breaking down doors and threatening to file lawsuits that would prompt this disparaging review of something as trivial as scratches on a cell phone.:D

But on a less serious note, cell phones get scratched?!?! LOL

My left front pocket is devoted solely to the iPhone. All my other crap goes elsewhere.

Technology meets Liberal Arts meets usage

It's one thing to design a beautiful piece of usable technology - it's another to think that's its not going to suffer some wear through that usage. I get a feeling the only time mine will look pristine is the moment I unbox it - from then on, it's subject to the rigors of my life. Like it or not.

I just hope the damn thing works better on the AT&T network, but not holding my breath.

Scratches aren't always a bad thing. Maybe in 20 years someone will want buy your scratched vintage iPhone for thousands $.

I noticed a scratch on my car last week. I took it back to the dealer and they gave me a full refund.

FYI, anything from motorola, htc, google etc would look a mess after a week of being thrown against a wall and dropped a few times. Wish the idiots on here would realise what Engadget actually DID to the damn phone. It wasn't just a case of putting it in your pocket.
