In conclusion to the issue with my Apple Watch, I received the replacement watch today – with 3 months of new, extra warranty. Restoring the new watch from backup now.

Very smooth operation with Apple Service. I'm happy to have the watch on my wrist again!

I hope this encourages other people, who might encounter the same issue.

Excellent news. Glad it worked in your favor.

Interesting reading.

This, I guess, applies here: "Gas buildup on subsequent charges is minimal; nevertheless, when designing the battery compartment for pouch cells, provision must be made to allow for some expansion."

I have no idea how tightly packed the insides of an Apple Watch are, but in any case, the battery in my watch has become bloated beyond the tolerance of the enclosure.

Too bad the watch cannot pass gas :D
"Did I hear your Apple Watch just fart?" :p

(Humor helps!)

It's kind of interesting to monitor how bloated the battery will get.
I don't think my battery is swollen. What I did was just put one of my many face covers over it and it's working fine. I can never wear it without the extra cover. I'm a die hard Mac user. In fact I still have the first 180 laptop. I own everything apple makes but service from a Mac store is god awful. Twice the "genius " said my motherboard was shot and both times I left the store and fixed the problem. 32 years later I know pay someone else to come to my house and handle any issues I have. Great products but awful service.

So you own every Apple watch band, every Mac mini, every power adaptor, every iMac, every iPhone, every Mac Pro, every iPad, every MacBook, etc. Please post pics of this complete collection.:D
[doublepost=1493160258][/doublepost]Excuse me, I never wasted my money on a Airbook.
If your interested in buying any of my old Macs I would be happy to send photos. What is your point?

Honestly I love Mac and view this forum as a means to help other users not a means to challenge or try to argue again, what is your point. My point was obvious, I love Macs but find service from Mac Stores incompetent at best so...are you looking to buy a collection or just have nothing better to do except challenge people

Awful service? That shocks me that you being such an Apple loyalist have had "Awful" service from Apple, yet you continue to support their product line. In my experiences, Apple's service has Been the one reason why I continue to invest with them, being I'm confident they will rectify any issues I encountered. However, I do agree they make quality hardware.

This happend to my Apple serie 2 nike volt almost immediatly after i recieved it. And Apple wanted me to pay for a refurbished one.

Had this issue too on my series 0 SS.

Alerted apple support via chat to the new extended warranty (battery was visibly swollen). They booked me a genius appointment and 3 days later i received a replacement. Brand spanking new with a 3 month warranty.

Had my Series 2 for two weeks (Fathers Day present), and the screen popped off on Saturday.
Took it to the local Apple Store, and the Genius Bar rep said "Oh yeah, swollen battery. Here's your repair # and we'll send you a new one"

Now I'm just waiting. But obviously it's not something that's been fixed in the later Series...

However, there is no recall for the Series 1/2 regarding the swollen batteries, likely because there is not enough units experiencing this issue in comparison to the first Generation Apple Watch..

View attachment 694582 ‪Absolutely gutted to take my Apple Watch series 1 off the charger this morning and find the screen has popped off! No damage, no scratches, never been dropped and I only wear it at weekends/workouts so it is immaculate. AppleSupport informed me that due to being out of warranty I needed to pay a £206 service charge... considering a new series 1 watch cost £269 it's safe to say I was not willing to proceed with that . Disgusted that the screen on my watch can just pop off.
Question is where do I go from here as the screen will not push back into position and stay there.
[doublepost=1500127395][/doublepost]IMG_6379.JPG I had the exact same problem with my watch which is a 42mm bought last year's September. Made an appointment to the nearest store to have it looked at and the "so called geniuses" told me I had to pay a £200 fee to get it fixed or perhaps get a new watch. But again there's no guarantee that's an isolated incident new versions will be exempted of. So I was sent away with my blood boiling inside my veins. But still, took it upon me to contact AppleCare hoping to get a different answer, but that didn't work either and they simple told me they were standing by the decision made at the store, in other words I was getting punished for something that was not of my wrongdoing. Up to this point, I have always been an apple products aficionado, I have got them all, phone, tablet computer and even headphones. As of now I have decided not to pursue them anymore,I am never getting another Apple Watch, and will be wary to getting anymore product from that company. Just imagine if we had to spend £400 every year to replace a faulty watch!!! Nope I am not putting any more money they don't deserve in their pockets and I'll rather save up and get myself a proper designer watch. Hey Apple, Guess what? your Watch sucks and you should really go back to your design board and rethink it. And let us hard-workers get our money back. But for now and out, your loss.

The picture you posted shows the screen off, but doesn't demonstrate if the battery was swollen (causing the issue). Did you purchase AC+ when you bought the watch, or do you just have the manufacturer's warranty?
If it is a swollen battery issue, then it's covered under the manufacturer's warranty. If the screen came off by impact with another object, then that would only be covered by AC+.

If it IS the swollen battery issue, then you shouldn't be paying. You should either go speak to the manager at the Apple Store or call back AppleCare and ask to speak to a supervisor. If you can't get satisfaction from either of those avenues (which is pretty rare!), then I'd say e-mail Tim Cook and the executive escalation team will have a look at your case.

My wife's Series 0 gold had the battery swell which caused the screen to pop off as well.

They replaced it with a Series 1. Didn't have to pay anything.

Thank you all for your answers.
After inspection i can't really tell if the battery is swollen causing the screen to pop off,Although it looked pretty fine to me. I am really over it at this point, as I believe I have done everything that needed doing. Let my story serve as cautionary tale to those thinking about getting this watch as their fitness motivator.
Again thank you for your helpful answers.

I've had the series 1 over a year now so no longer under warranty.
I stated no scratches etc because the screen popping off has not been a result of malicious damage. I could understand if I dropped it but it has literally been treated with complete care.

Under EU law you get a 2 year warranty.

My first gen SS watch recently popped it's lid. Never dropped. Off to the genius bar tomorrow at lunch.

Dropped the watch off at the Genius bar. Free repair what would normally cost $249.

Received replacement first gen last Friday.

Also because they're only 10 months old at most, and so all covered under the 1 year AppleCare warranty right now.

That is true, they are covered under the warranty being it's only been under a year since the release. But regardless, there have been reports of both those watches experiencing battery/display issues, just not as prevalent as the first generation.

Screen popped off about 2 weeks ago due to battery swelling. (1st generation.) Anyway, got my replacement yesterday. Series 1. Took a little longer than they estimated but I'm not complaining. Basically got a brand-new watch and only 14 days of "inconvenience." I didn't realize that the battery swelling wasn't only isolated to the 1st gen, though.

  • Series 1 can't be out of warranty unless you only get 90 days in the UK or it is a Series 0
  • Saying screen popped off and no damage is an oxymoron
If an S0 then there is not much you can do besides gluing back on and avoiding moisture as much as possible.
Same happened to me. While I wait for a reasonable price to get it fixed, if I ever do, I purchased a screen protector from Amazon for about $8.00 and it is holding it in place. A little glare in the sun, but it works and the touch screen functions like without the screen protector. Hope this helps.
