Gotcha.

that's actually halo effect as I understand it. I always thought 'halo effect' was the rainbow effect, but that's that.

Which brand screen protector you got? guess its all too common. at least it feels like good enough on the side to swipe without catching the edge of the protector with my finger like some do
I tried the Belkin Invisiglass that Apple sells and installs. I also tried Spigen and Zagg.

Every one of them had the same problem. I tried multiple times on Spigen and Zagg. I spent close to $100 on screen protectors.

well that's a re-assurance for me to just deal with it and not go down the rabbit hole. or not go screen protector.

scratches don't worry me about this phone, accidentally whacking the face does. It's saved me before with other screen protectors. if I feel like risking it down the road, maybe I will (backpedaled from 'no protector this go round') but this unit in particular is perfect too. Nevermind the financial ding if I have to get screen or unit replaced, its a good unit and I'm pretty happy / won the QC lotto

The Manto screen protector is on the thicker side, so the lip on the case is only slightly taller than the protector (a few mm). Keeps the screen from touching table when put face down, but probably offers minimal protection during fall.

I attached some pics of screen protector with no case on so you can see thickness.

Thank you so much for posting these pictures. I mean this seems like the best current screen protector out there.

Look at the pictures above, their Manto protector works well.

What I don’t understand is how can my XR screen protector not have the issue but my SE does? (And 6/7/8 would too) is it because it’s less surface area and curves sooner after the screen ends?

It does work "well" it is not perfect, I am 90% happy with it. It does have some issues:
1. Not well known brand, so not sure on long term quality
2. Thicker than regular screen protector, might be an issue with some cases
3. If you have a case that intrudes further into the screen section or one that has a part that goes over the screen, this might cause issues since the pressure from the case on the protector might cause bubbles

The best full coverage protectors that I have purchased in the past come from this place: https://flolab.io/collections/iphone-8-screen-protector, they make really great protectors and are really highly recommended. They seem to have an additional adhesive around edges to prevent the protector from peeling up.
The reasons that I did not go that route:
1. They take a really long time to ship (~2weeks)
2. They are expensive compared to Amazon knock off version (Manto), plus charge shipping ($4-6)
3. They only provide 1 protector (I always get dust trapped in the first one 😬)

Hope this helps, but I am really happy with the Manto, with the caveats mentioned. If you want a higher quality version, I would go with the Flolab one.

Please update after you get it. I have this same one in my Amazon cart, but won't pull the trigger until reviews come in.

Since getting my SE I've ordered 3 screen protectors including the JETech screen protector (which is on my iPhone 8 hence getting it again for SE as i thought they were the same) off Amazon and one at my local supermarket all of them have had the Halo effect one way or another never had this with the iPhone 8 or 6S

That's too bad. I'll hold off. I sent Moshi a note to ask about their iVisor. I've used that product on iPads and MacBooks and love them. But I won't pull the trigger until they answer back.

it was Jony Ive’s departure revenge

Ya it is a good "temporary option" in my eyes right now until they figure it out a bit more on sizing screen protectors.

so bizarre and unexpected, must be a real headache for screen protector manufacturers to deal with.

I don't understand though, with 6s/7/8, were there tempered glass screen protectors that didn't have this issue, but most still did or not many did? Cause looks like amazon reviews with photos of tempered glass for that screen sizing, dating from well before SE 2020, so 6s/7/8, have this issue too. Just not familiar with how common it is .

I don't necessarily recall this with tempered glass when I had Plus sized iPhones, unless I installed the protector slightly off since the margin of having it exactly aligned with the screen was narrow.. but I don't recall this being an issue.

Moshi confirmed via message that they are working on certifying their screen protectors for the SE. so I’m holding off for now. My matte film for my previous phone fit fine. So I’m good in the meantime. (It’s an iCarez I believe)

I was planning on getting the Laut screen protector. It claims to utilize "a tailor made curved edge" - but it also says it's compatible with both the 8 and the new SE, which isn't promising.

Anyone have any experience with this one?

The curve on the screens on the iPhone X/XS/11 Pro phones are much more subtle and less pronounced than the curves on the iPhone 6/7/8/New SE.

That is why you (and countless others) didn't have issues with applying a screen protector on your XS.

The SE definitely has a more curved screen than the 6s.

I have some JETech and ESR screen protectors that work fine on the 6s but on the SE 2020 they don't stick down at the edges.

I tried JETech, Spigen, and Belkin and all three has the same halo issue.

I bought a few from Best Buy yesterday on my way home (had some store credits to burn) - Insignia, Armor Edge, and Zagg. Didn’t expect any of them to work, but the first one I tried (Insignia) laid down perfectly with no halo. I didn’t have to manipulate it at all, it laid down clean the first time. It doesn’t look any more narrow than the others I have tried (besides Spigen, who might just have a bad batch of these as theirs was clearly too wide), so I honestly don’t know what it is about the others that aren’t gripping properly on the edges.

FWIW, when I ordered it online, it said it was for the 2nd Gen SE, but when they handed me the box (curbside pickup), it said iPhone 8.

So I didn’t get to try the Zagg or Armor Edge (Best Buy’s Zagg competitor). But the Insignia laid down perfectly. 🤷‍♂️

Was the Insignia glass or plastic? With plastic its flexible enough to follow a curve. Or could be much thinner glass allowing it to bend more.

I’m looking for something UK side that will work and still waiting on manufacturers to bring something official out on amazon.

was the successful insignia one made for an iPhone 8?

It's definitely glass. I was a bit surprised as well. It has a guide to lay it down as centered as possible, and the edges were one of the first to adhere as it was laying down (you know how you can see it sort of "flow" across the protector as it's sticking).

I don't want to guarantee it will work for everyone, as one of the reviews said it didn't for them (though a couple others seem to indicate it did).

The online product page says iPhone SE (2nd Generation), but the box itself says iPhone 8.

where did you buy the Belkin? I thought people that bought them at Apple Store were complaining that it is narrower than normal. i was wondering if it is going to fit better on the SE.

Target. Out of those three that I tried, it was by far the best. There was just one side (and about 3/4 of that side) that I couldn't get to stay down... but it would try to stay down, and within minutes lift back up again.
