I installed the 500GB 7200.4 drive yesterday. No vibration and dead quiet in my Unibody Macbook.

those are just screws with some silicon washers on them. Go to a hardware store and get some tiny washers to do the same thing.

Boy, this reminds me of my desktop pc days where I was so obsessed with case noice I must have spent a fortune on little silicon buffers and low DB fans. And by fortune, I mean $50 tops.
Hah - tell me about it. I was a little crazier, though. I bought about $150 worth of noise dampening material that is used for car audio and lined the entire inside of my case with it......what a waste. In fact, I'm thinking back at all the time and money I spent customizing my PC cases and I'm wondering if it was worth it.

I am afraid to get this Seagate 500 GB because of the recent failures!

But it would sure be nice with 500 GB in my MBP !

Maybe i'll wait til Western Digital comes out with one....

Seagate issue was a firmware issue limited to their 1.5TB drives. I've run Seagate drives since '95 with no issues, and still live by them. I know WD has gotten better, but I got burnt once buy them. I had a WD drive that was DOA in a day. Not a fun experience.

This drive so far has been great. I've pretty much seen a speed increase of double what I had with my stock 120GB 5400 RPM drive. Runs quiet and no vibration. Considering I'm encoding a DVD right now with Handbrake as I right this. Nothing coming through the case as I type. Boot times and shut down is amazingly faster.

I highly recommend this drive.

I'll keep posting on what I'm finding. My comment on your original post was in fun, and I was finishing up watching Exorcist. You'll notice the reference from the post.

Looking to buy one of these for my MBP, despite the slightly daunting install task. Which is better, the AS or the ASG? I remember someone saying which is better and why, but i cant find it in the thread.

Hoping to see a speed increase from my Stock 250Gb 5400RPM Drive (Destined for PS3 Use) and maybe a noise decrease?

A bit louder and slight vibration

I installed mine in a FW800 housing, replacing the 200GB 7200 Hitachi drive. In a quiet room it is definitely louder than the drive it replaced (noticeable hum) and it does cause a slight vibration on the desk. I decided not to put in in my Mac and will use it to replace the 2 external drives I used to carry.

Cheers,

Newegg has deactivated item

Newegg shows this as deactivated item.

No one else seems to have it in stock either.

The only 500 GB 7200rpm notebook drive in existence - and at a very reasonable price... My only surprise is newegg got enough stock from seagate initially to have a full week's worth of supply.

I wouldn't be surprised to see prices on those drives to go up a bit now that everyone realizes how quickly they'll sell.

Anyone know any places to get this cheap in Sydney?

I have just ordered a Seagate 500Gb 7200rpm online from
www.techbuy.com.au
As of yesterday they had 3 units left. Due to be delivered mid-late next week (starting 16 Feb 2009)
Not the cheapest but I trust these guys. The cheapest I could find in Sydney was about $30 less.

To find cheapest prices:

This is like shopbot for IT gear.

Random question of the night, but how much does it affect your battery life when going from a 5400 rpm hd to a 7200 rpm in a MBP? I have never really thought about getting a 7200 rpm until this drive came out at this price. guess we will have to wait and see if the price goes back up, or is SSD drop dramatically in the next 6 months.

One of the features of the 7200.4 is how it sips power compared to other 7200 rpm drives bringing it in line with most of todays 5400 rpm drives. Read the power consumption specs on the Seagate site.

I've googled and searched the forums but no avail, can someone answer this?

I've got the Core 2 Duo MBP and I'm planning on ordering the 7200.4 500GB HD.

Because of my job I have to run Windows 95% of the time so run bootcamp, I found no definitive answer to this:

Does the Sudden Motion Sensor work within Windows the same as in OSX?

If not I guess I'm better getting the G-Force version and then turning off SMS when I boot into OSX, or will this disable it for windows too?

If anyone could answer this that would be great.

Cheers

an online chat with newegg last night, they said they deactivate a product if it will be more than 2 weeks before new stock arrives. glad i ordered mine when i did.

I just purchased mine from tiger direct for $129.99 plus $2 shipping. It's in stock and it's shipping today. For those of you trying to get one, you can get it from tiger instead of newegg. It's $10 cheaper and more importantly it's in stock =). I also picked up a USB enclosure for $10.

BTW, I'm getting this for my best friend's b-day. It's SR MacBook only has a 120 gb 5400 drive and he uses iMovie a lot. Now he can save all of his clips and projects on the laptop without carrying the external hard drive.

Good luck everyone. Hope you can get one before it's out of stock again.

This is good stuff and definitely makes me want to make a move before the SSD drives hit 500GB, but I probably will wait. At $150 or so for this drive, however, it is probably worth going ahead and making the purchase.
