So what i've read so far is that some of you are having problems and some aren't. I have a 2007 Intel Core 2 duo MacBook Pro and I wanted to know who of you have the same and have installed this new drive. I'm planning on getting one but just want to be sure. Thanks

I just installed this drive in my 2007 Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro. I haven't noticed any more vibrations or a loss of battery life. I had a 7200 RPM drive in there before, so I couldn't tell you how it compares to a standard 5400 RPM drive.

I just purchased mine from tiger direct for $129.99 plus $2 shipping. It's in stock and it's shipping today. For those of you trying to get one, you can get it from tiger instead of newegg. It's $10 cheaper and more importantly it's in stock =).
Some of us have had some very bad experiences with Tiger Direct's customer service.

Personally I'd wait for NewEgg to get more stock. YMMV....

I have purchased from Tiger Direct two times, the first and last.
Be careful of hidden charges, massive junk mail and email, and not so new merchandise.

Newegg is worth the $10 more..

Just ordered from Tiger Direct. You can also get 5% from Microsoft Live Cashback. I don't order from them very often, and I know that their customer service isn't the greatest, but my last purchase turned out ok, so I decided to take a chance. Since the hard drive is so new, it's unlikely that they are shipping used drives. I want to make sure that I have the drive when my 17-inch MBP arrives later this month.

For those of you who ordered and received their drive from newegg, did you guys receive a seagate box and manuals or did you get the drive in antistatic packaging, bubble wrapped and in a box with packing peanuts?

I got my drive on Feb. 3, and I got the drive and nothing else.

DO NOT BUY A MOMENTOUS. i work in a mac shop and the core duo and early C2D Macbooks all came with momentuses and they fail FAR more often than any other drive. also fyi hitachi is currently having a bad run of drives too but i think hitachi will improve by the next run, the seagate momentus on the other hand we see fail time and time again.

Most internal drives I've received from newegg are OEM (no retail packaging, drive only).

Cheers,

It is not a retail box. It is bulk.

I just today ordered this hard drive from Tiger Direct, and it already shipped. I don't understand how people complain about customer service. You find an item, place order, pay for it, they ship it. What's the big deal? I see that as no different than NewEgg who is out of them.

I got an email from NewEgg telling me they had them back in stock, and as soon as I tried to order, they were showing out of stock. So Tiger Direct got my order. And I paid less for it.

I agree. I wanted to get it from newegg and I was notified it's in stock. But when I tried to order it, it's auto notify again. Before I placed my order from tiger direct, I looked very carefully and it doesn't say it's refurbished as some other have shown, and the part number is the same as newegg. I'll report any problem if the order didn't turn out right. The important thing is they had it in stock and newegg was out. I wanted to get it before my friends b-day. It's a good alternative since everyone else is out. Just my .02

I think its just some NewEgg fanboy, who suggested they ship used product. Since this is a spankin new item, it has not had time to become used.

Its nonsense, just like anyone who has the need to complain about customer service. I have no plans or intention of contacting customer service, but if I need to I'm sure it won't be traumatic. We are talking about $129.00.

Overclockers.co.uk are now showing this drive available to pre-order for £89.99+VAT, which works out (including Royal Mail Special Delivery) at approx £112. I was tempted by an SSD but for that price you really can't argue for the capacity and relative speed (Barefeats claiming it to be the fastest laptop HDD they've tested). Unfortunately they can't say when they're due in but I've got my pre-order in.

I placed my order at TigerDirect last night at 10:30PM, and I already got a tracking number that shows an Origin scan from UPS at 10:58PM. Not sure how they can possibly process orders that quickly. I'll be impressed if I get it by the end of the week after only paying $1.99 for shipping.

Bad News

I got the AS (not G Shock) one from Newegg. I ordered it Friday and received it last night. Tonight I put into one of the clear OWC Firewire/USB cases and set Disk Utility to Zero the drive as is my usual practice. (You may as well find out if a drive has problems as quickly as possible.)

Disk Utility showed an approximate time of 3 hours. The last time I checked it there were 41 minutes remaining. I came back later and there was a message window saying that the drive had failed to complete the process!

I tried to simply erase/initialize it and it locked up Disk Utility. I had to shut the drive down (with the power switch on it). I decided to try the quick initialization one last time after turning it back on and it appears to have successfully done that but I think that it is going to go back. I do not think that any drive that fails being zeroed is reliable. I suppose that I could hook it up and try to zero it again overnight and see what happens, but this is not a good start.

Newegg now says that they are out of stock and do not know if they will get anymore of these drives. I don't know what is going on, but this is beginning to smell fishy.

I will be calling Seagate tomorrow and figuring out what sort of other drive I may want to get instead. I had wanted this one because of its size and speed, but not if it is unreliable.

What is fishy? It sounds like you received a faulty or defective HD. Not an unreliable one.

But thanks for the tip of zeroing the drive before installation.

I take it no one knows about whether the "Sudden Motion Sensor" runs under bootcamp (Windows XP)?

Surely there's someway of finding out?

What's fishy is that it sounded like there was more going on than just my problem because of the way that NewEgg was dealing with the product listing. Information available to me today indicates that there may be a "firmware problem" with these drives too. :(

Indications are that the G Force model will be shipped some time this month. I do not understand why Seagate would bother making anything other than the G Force model. One model would simplify their production and distribution "pipeline". Given the choice, I can not think of any reason a customer would knowingly choose a non-G Force drive over a G-Force drive. Right now, you have no choice.

Given the choice, I can not think of any reason a customer would knowingly choose a non-G Force drive over a G-Force drive.

Reason 1:

The 'Sudden Motion Sensor' in Mac laptops reportedly conflicts with the G-Force shock protection.

Seagate has to improve quality. So far only Seagates failed me. However it is nice to have 7200 rpm drive, especially 500GB.

This has nothing to do with NewEgg.

This is about specific previous issues with Tiger Direct. Many people have been charged a different invoiced amount by TD vs. what they were shown when they were ordering. Other people that have had problems with a piece of hardware (and some people are definitely having issues with some of these drives) have had difficultly simply trying to get an exchange or return.

Sure, customer service isn't an issue when everything goes fine. Do us a favor and wait until you try to return a defective drive and let us know how it goes. Customer service is more than just shipping something out the door and emailing a tracking number. Customer service is how they handle problems that will inevitably come up with a certain percentage of any hardware.

And I really don't get your "its only $129" comment. Even if that's pocket change to you, that doesn't mean it is for everyone else.
