I'm not surprised, it seems Apple has stopped supporting the second and third gen ATV's. We've been experiencing reboots with our second generation Apple TV while watching a show in an app ever since it got more apps updated to it. The only way to fix this is to completely reset the device, thus wiping out all of our app logins (Netflix, HBO, etc).

My best guess is the reboots are caused by the cache filling up and the reset clears it for a bit, but
the fix only lasts for maybe a week or so and then it starts rebooting again at random. Obviously the second gen wasn't designed for an app store, let alone the number of apps that are now on it (wish you could just delete individual apps). We finally threw the device in a drawer and use our fourth generation for our purchased Apple movies, but mostly anymore we just use our Smart TV apps.

Really wish Apple would just make a Chromecast type ATV, alongside the current model, that simply lets you AirPlay from your Mac or iOS device.

Is this Apple now, release stripped down products and remove perfectly fine existing features...

Imagine what would happen if Apple does manufacture a car!? "The 2019 version of the iCar has new autonomous braking...but we removed the brake pedal...an adapter is available though!"

Did you bother to read the article? It says right there that there could be a fix in a couple of HOURS. I guess your session of Stranger Things can wait.

One of our 3rd generation AppleTVs was acting up the other day (slow, almost unresponsive, even after a restart), and I remarked to my wife that I wouldn't be buying the 4th generation. Maybe Apple is trying to force the issue...

Very interesting. My 3rd-gen has never given me a single problem, was watching Netflix on it just last night. Nice to know that Apple is working on a solution and not hanging owners of these older products out to dry already.

REWIND:
“Apple's support staff told a Reddit user that a fix was in the works, and to expect a software update in the near future. A MacRumors reader received similar information, with Apple suggesting a fix would be pushed within the next few hours.”

I posted about this bug in 2012, and as recently as last month my dad encountered this issue again. We have always assumed that it was on our end - e.g. the wifi went out or something - but if this is indeed an Apple issue, Apple really needs to fix their products. To be experiencing the same bug for 4 years is unacceptable.

I'm so glad to see this post. This happened to my 2nd Gen ATV less than 2 weeks ago. I did all that stuff, unplugging, resetting the ATV, the router, trying to connect to iTunes on my iMac and not having it be recognized ---that's the point where I was fuming. After 2-3 days it was suddenly working again. No idea why. But I DON'T want to go through it all again, so I really, really hope this bug fix will apply to the Gen 2 ATV. I think I'd rather get a Roku than another ATV is that's the case.

I distrust Apple's motivations these days. Once customer goodwill is squandered, it's extremely difficult to get it back.

How much 4k is really out there? People keep harping on that......so I am wondering. 1/3 of the HiDef is still at 720p native......

If you have 2FA turned on, gen 2 and 3 do not support that. You need to enter the code directly after your password for it operate.

Probably some security certificate didn't get updated that is needed for trust between the device and iTunes locally and online. Surprising that resetting the device would not resolve the issue.

it was intended. Your new Atv feature....disabled feature. The purpose is to get you to buy atv4.

Well, I guess we didn't take the hint when Apple stopped selling the Gen2 and Gen3 so they had to make it a little more obvious...

The fact that you quoted strangers things makes me laugh more than the article.
for a good show try Badlands or Orphan Black ;)

Good lord, everyone in here is so quick to blame planned obsolescence when most of you probably don't know how the product works. None of the apps are actually stored on the device, they're all streamed to the Apple TV's. So if something goes wrong on Apple's servers, it can have this effect. Apparently is just took longer than normal to fix this issue. Probably more complicated than usual. It was already back up and running before this post even went up...
