1. "Sales" does not remotely correspond to devices-in-use. Your data is way off. iPhone dominates the entire smartphone world. The ones being actually used by people.
I don't know what other metric you have to support this, but I think you're way off. Worldwide mobile browser usage suggests it's 25% iPhone at most. US smartphone market share, meaning people actually using them, is known to be roughly 50% iPhone. Most of the rest of the world can't afford iPhones.

If you were right, WhatsApp wouldn't be so popular, for instance. It exists for people who can't use iMessage.

Maybe. We all have our different experiences.
We're all using the same cable, which is inherently prone to fraying and eventual breakage.

Like, this joke doesn't exist for USB.

I’ve had a GAZILLION USB cables of varying quality. It’s NEVER happened. Those damn cables simply REFUSE to die and I can’t get myself to throw them away….so they accumulate. I usually keep 2x of every old standard in case…

You tried downloading a decent length movie filmed in high resolution from your iPhone via lightning? FFS, lightning is dead, time to move on. They only stick to it because it is proprietary and they can make more profits from it.
No, and I’d say downloading videos to your phone via wired connection is now uncommon. Anyway, that’s USB-3, not USB-C, and can be implemented with Lightning. Profits from this are totally irrelevant compared to those coming from phone sales: if customers preferred USB-C, they would switch (even for economic reasons).

What is better with lightning? To me it is a no-brainer. Lightning may be more widespread where you live, but that is not gonna last long, even if Apple sticks to it for iPhones and accessories. Every other manufacturer use USB-C and iPhones + accessories do not have more than 50% market share anywhere. I mean, everything from consoles, to battery banks, laptops, phones etc etc come with USB-C these days. Even my electric toothbrush.
Size, male connector on the cable end, secured placement (not based on friction). In the end, I prefer the right connector for the right device, I don’t think it makes sense (and it’s not optimal) to have the same one for a big computer and a headphones case.
